वे अपनी उदारता और बहादुरी के बारे में झूठ बोलते हुए भी कविताएँ बनाते थे।
वे पैसे के बदले में धनी लोगों की प्रशंसा करते थे और उन लोगों की आलोचना करते थे जो भुगतान करने में विफल रहते थे।

आयत 227 उन मुस्लिम कवियों की प्रशंसा करती है जिन्होंने दुश्मन कवियों के हमलों का जवाब दिया और अपनी कविताओं में पैगंबर (ﷺ) और इस्लाम का बचाव किया।

224कवियों के पीछे तो गुमराह ही चलते हैं।
225क्या तुम नहीं देखते कि वे हर बात पर कैसे बकवास करते हैं,
226केवल ऐसी बातें कहते हैं जिन पर वे कभी अमल नहीं करते?
227लेकिन ऐसा उन लोगों के साथ नहीं है जो ईमान रखते हैं, नेक अमल करते हैं, अल्लाह का बहुत ज़िक्र करते हैं, और अन्यायपूर्ण हमलों का जवाब देते
हैं।
ज़ुल्म करने वाले जल्द ही देखेंगे कि वे कहाँ जा पहुँचते हैं।
وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ224
أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِي كُلِّ وَادٖ يَهِيمُونَ225
وَأَنَّهُمۡ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفۡعَلُونَ226
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَذَكَرُواْ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرٗا وَٱنتَصَرُواْ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُواْۗ وَسَيَعۡلَمُ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓاْ أَيَّ مُنقَلَبٖ يَنقَلِبُونَ227
