WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

  • Verse 46 mentions "the good deeds that last forever.

" According to scholars, this means all good deeds and acts of worship that benefit us on Judgment Day and lead us to eternal life in Jannah, including

prayers, charity, fasting, and dhikr (remembrance of Allah) such as: 'SubhanAllah' (Glory be to Allah), 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise be to Allah), and 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the

    Greatest).

    {Imam Ibn Kathir & Imam Al-Qurtubi}

SIDE STORY

SIDE STORY

  • Once upon a time, there was an Imam who lived in a village by the ocean.

One day, he went to the market to sell his horse.

Shortly after, a man came and said he would be blessed to buy the Imam's horse.

The Imam advised the man, "This horse is unique and highly trained.

To make it walk, you have to say, 'SubhanAllah.

' To make it run, you have to say, 'Alhamdulillah.

' And to make it stop, you have to say, 'Allahu Akbar.

'" The man paid the price and thanked the Imam for the wonderful advice.

  • When he sat on the horse, he said, 'SubhanAllah.

' The horse started to walk.

Then he said, 'Alhamdulillah,' and it started to run.

He kept saying, 'Alhamdulillah,' and the horse ran faster and faster.

Suddenly, the man noticed that the horse was running towards a cliff.

He was so terrified of falling into the ocean that he forgot how to stop the horse.

He kept saying other things like, 'Astaghfirullah' and 'A'uzubillah,' but nothing seemed to work.

  • Illustration
  • Finally, when the horse was just one step away from the edge, the man remembered and shouted, 'Allahu Akbar!

    ' and the horse stopped.

The man took a deep breath, looked up towards the sky, and shouted, 'Alhamdulillah!

    ' The end.

SHORT & ETERNAL GAINS

45And give them an example of this life.

'It is' just like the plants of the earth, blooming when watered by the rain We send down from the sky.

Then they soon crumble to pieces, blown away by the wind.

And Allah has perfect power over all things.

46Wealth and children are the joy of this life, but the good deeds that last forever are far better with your Lord in reward and in hope.

JUDGMENT DAY

47Watch for' the Day We will blow the mountains away, and you will see the earth laid bare.

And We will gather all 'humankind', leaving none behind.

48They will be presented in front of your Lord in rows, 'and the wicked will be told,' 'You have actually returned to Us 'all alone' as We created

you the first time, even though you 'always' claimed that We would never set a time for your return.

'

49And the book 'of deeds' will be laid 'open', and you will see the wick-ed panicking because of what is writ-ten' there.

They will cry, 'Oh no!

We are doomed!

What kind of book is this that does not leave any sin, small or large, without recording it?

' They will find whatever they did right in front of them.

And your Lord will never treat anyone unfairly.

SATAN & HIS FOLLOWERS

50And remember' when We said to the angels, 'EBow down to Adam' so they all did--but not Iblis, who was one of the iinn, but he challenged the

command of his Lord.

How could you then take him and his children as guardians instead of Me, even though they are your enemies?

What an evil choice made by those doing wrong!

51I never called them to witness the creation of the heavens and the earth or even their own creation.

I would never take the misleaders as helpers.

52And 'watch for' the Day He will say, 'Call upon those 'idols' you claimed were My partners.

' So they will call them, but will receive no response.

And We will make them all share the same doom.

53The wicked will see the Fire and real-ize that they are going to fall into it, and will find no way to avoid it.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

  • In verses 54-57, Allah says that He has given every kind of lesson in the Quran, but people just keep arguing, using falsehood against the truth, even without

    understanding it.

    For example, they argued that:

  • • The Quran was magic.

    • The Prophet (ﷺ) made the Quran up.

  • • Allah should have sent them an angel, not just a man.

    • There were other gods with Allah.

  • Illustration
  • • Allah can't bring them back to life for judgment.

    • Their gods will defend them if there is actually a Judgment Day.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

  • Arguing to establish the truth is acceptable in Islam.

The Quran argues, for example, that Allah is our Creator and He alone deserves our worship, Muhammad (ﷺ) is His prophet, the Quran is a revelation from Him,

and Judgment Day is coming for sure.

The Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions also responded to people who came to argue about these beliefs.

However, arguing for no reason is not good, especially when it's done only to show off or win an argument, not to support the truth.

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I guarantee: • A home inside Paradise for those who give up arguing even if they are right.

    • A home in the middle of Paradise for those who avoid lying even if they are joking.

    • A home in the highest rank of Paradise for those who have good manners.

    " {Imam Abu Dawood}

SIDE STORY

SIDE STORY

  • There was a man who smoked all the time.

His wife tried every possible way to convince him to quit smoking, but he always refused.

She told him that he was wasting their savings and harming himself, but he didn't listen.

Eventually, she told him, "For every $10 you spend on cigarettes, I'm going to take $10 for myself from the savings.

    " He argued, "Take $20, I don't care.

    "

  • So she started to take money matching the amount he wasted buying cigarettes.

But this didn't change the situation, so she decided to try something else.

She told him that she was going to take the money and burn it, just like he burned cigarettes.

It was only when he saw her burning the money that he realized he had made a mistake and promised to quit smoking—starting next year!

  • Khalid called his internet provider to complain about a payment increase.

He said he had subscribed to the unlimited data package for $100, but when he used more than 20 gigabytes, they charged him an extra $50.

He couldn't understand how his 'unlimited package' was 'limited.

' After arguing for 30 minutes, the internet company replied, "Yes, our unlimited package is actually limited, just like your name is Khalid ('the one who lives forever'),

but everyone knows you are going to die.

    "

DENYING THE QURAN

54We have certainly given in this Quran every 'k kind of lesson for people, but hu-mans just Iike to argue more than any-thing.

55And nothing prevents people from believing when guidance comes to them and from seeking their Lord's for-giveness except 'their demand' to suffer the same fate of earlier deniers

or see the punishment face-to-face,

56We only send the messengers to give good news and warnings.

But the disbelievers argue with falsehood, 'hoping' to damage the ruth with it, and make fun of My reve-lations and warnings.

57And who does more wrong than those who are remind-ed of their Lord's revelations, then turn away from them and forget what their own hands have done?

We have certain-ly covered their hearts-making them unable to understand this 'Quran'and blocked their ears.

And if you O Proph-et' invite them to 'true' guidance, they will never be guided.

ALLAH'S PATIENCE

58Your Lord is the One full of forgive-ness and mercy.

If He wanted to punish them 'immediately' for what they did, He would have sped up their punishment.

But they have a set time, from which they will have no escape.

59Those 'are the' societies We destroyed when they kept doing Wrong and We had set a time for their destruction.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

  • One day, Prophet Musa (A.

    S.

) gave a powerful speech, then a man asked him, "Who is the most knowledgeable person on earth?

    " Since Musa (A.

    S.

) was a great prophet, he replied, "That would be me!

" Allah revealed to Musa (A.

    S.

) that he should not have said that, and told him that there was a man who had special knowledge that Musa didn't have.

    Musa (A.

    S.

) was then commanded to travel to meet this man, named Al-Khidr, at a place between two bodies of water.

    Musa (A.

    S.

) asked how he could recognize that man, and Allah told him, "Take a (salted) fish with you and wherever you lose it, you will find him there.

    "

  • Musa (A.

    S.

) and his young assistant Yusha' walked for days until they reached the point between the two bodies of water and decided to get some rest.

Suddenly, the salted fish came back to life and jumped into the water, but Yusha' forgot to tell Musa (A.

    S.

    ).

After they continued their travel, Musa (A.

    S.

) asked for the fish and Yusha' told him that it was lost where they had rested.

    Musa (A.

    S.

) said, "This is the sign we were looking for.

" Then they walked back and found Al-Khidr.

  • Musa (A.

    S.

) asked Al-Khidr if he could kindly follow him and learn from his special knowledge.

At first, Al-Khidr said, "You can't be patient enough with me.

    " Musa (A.

    S.

) promised to be patient and obedient.

    But soon Musa (A.

    S.

) protested: • When Al-Khidr made a hole in a ship after its owners had given them a free ride.

    • When he killed an innocent boy.

    • When he fixed the wall of an unkind people for free.

Before they went their separate ways, Al-Khidr explained to Musa (A.

    S.

) why he had done all of these things.

The Prophet (ﷺ) commented on this story: "I wish my brother Musa (A.

    S.

) had been more patient so Allah would tell us more about him and the man of knowledge.

    " {Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim}

STORY 3) MUSA & AL-KHIDR

60And 'remember' when Musa said to his young assistant, 'I will never give up until I reach the point where the two seas meet, even ifI travel for

ages.

'

61But when they 'finally' reached that point, they forgot their 'salted' fish, and it made its way into the sea, slipping away.

62When they had passed further, he said to his assistant, 'Bring us our meal!

We have certainly been exhausted by today's journey.

'

63He e replied, 'Do you remem-ber when we rested by the rock?

That is when' I forgot the fish.

No one made me forget to mention this except Satan.

And the fish incredibly made its way into the sea.

'

64Musa responded, 'That is exactly what we were looking for:' So they went back, retracing their footsteps.

MUSA MEETS AL-KHIDR

65There they found a servant of Ours, who had been blessed with mercy from Us and gifted with 'special" knowledge of Our Own.

66Musa said to him, 'May I follow you, if you are going to teach me Some of the right guidance you have been taught?

'

67He replied, 'You really cannot be patient enough with me.

68And how can you be patient with what is beyond your knowledge?

'

69Musa promised, 'You will find me patient, in-sha-Allah, and I will not disobey any of your or-ders'

70He replied, 'Then if you follow me, do not question me about anything until I myself clarify it for you.

THE SHIP INCIDENT

71So they moved on, until they board-ed a ship, and the man made a hole in it.

Musa protested, 'Have you just done this to drowm its people?

You have certainly done a terrible thing!

'

72He replied, 'Did I not say that you cannot have patience with me?

'

73Musa said, 'Excuse me for forgetting, and do not be hard on me.

'

THE BOY INCIDENT

74Then they moved on until they came across a boy, and the man killed him.

Musa protested, 'Have you just killed an innocent soul that killed no one?

You have certainly done a horrible thing!

'

75He replied, 'Did I not tell you that you cannot have patience with me?

'

76Musa said, 'If I ever question you about any-thing after this, do not keep me in your company, because by then I would have given you enough of

an excuse.

'

THE WALL INCIDENT

77Then they moved on until they came to the people of a town.

They asked them for some food, but the people refused to give them any.

There they found a wall ready to collapse, so the man fixed it up.

Musa protested, 'If you wanted, you could have demanded a fee for this.

78He replied, 'That's it, we must go our separate ways!

I will explain to you what you could not take patiently.

'

THE 3 INCIDENTS EXPLAINED

79As for the ship, it belonged to some poor people who work at sea.

So I wanted to damage it, because there was a 'wick-ed' king ahead of them who took every 'good' ship by force.

80And as for the boy, his parents were true believers, but we feared that he would 'later' pres-sure them into wickedness and disbelief.

81So we hoped that their Lord would give them another child, more faithful and caring in his place.

82And as for the wall, it was for two orphan boys in the city, and under the wall was a treasure that belonged to them, and their father

had been a good man.

So your Lord wanted these children to grow up and dig out their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord.

I did not do it all on my own.

This is the explanation of what you could not take patiently.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

  • The next story is of a faithful king who travelled to the far east and far west, and is known as Zul-Qarnain ('the two horns/points of sunrise and

    sunset').

Some people think that Zul-Qarnain was Alexander the Great, but this can't be true because Alexander the Great was an idol-worshipper.

Most likely, Zul-Qarnain was Abu Kuraib Al-Hamiri, a believing king from Yemen.

According to Imam Ibn Kathir, Allah blessed Zul-Qarnain with authority and resources, so he travelled long distances.

During his journey to the west, he was inspired to reward those who do good and punish those who do evil.

He did the same during his journey to the east.

  • In his third journey, he came across a group of people that had no protection from the sun.

He met a group of people who understood him only through sign language.

They asked him to build a barrier between the two mountains to protect them from the attacks of the people of Ya'juj and Ma'juj.

  • We don't know for sure where Ya'juj and Ma'juj are locked away.

This shouldn't be strange if we keep in mind that every now and then we come into contact with a new tribe (for example, in the Amazon Forest

and the Philippines) that was previously unknown.

At the end of time, Ya'juj and Ma'juj will be able to dig their way out of that barrier and cause a lot of trouble throughout the land

before they will eventually be destroyed.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

  • Someone may ask, "If the Quran doesn't conflict with science, how come verse 86 says that the sun was setting in the mud?

" Here are a few tips to deal with these types of questions: • The Makkan idol-worshippers never used these verses to question the Quran because they understood

    what they meant.

    • The scholars of the Quran have already gone through these verses and explained them in detail, including Imam Ar-Razi and Imam Az-Zamakhshari.

    • Today, some people who hate Islam try to find ways to attack the Quran, so they use these kinds of questions even though they can't read or

    understand Arabic.

  • Now, the verse doesn't say that the sun was setting in the mud.

It says it appeared to Zul-Qarnain to be setting on a muddy spring.

In other words, this is what he saw, not what actually happened.

Similarly, we use the words 'sunrise' and 'sunset' even though the sun doesn't actually rise or set.

This is just what appears to our eyes, not what really happens.

  • In many places in the Quran, Allah tells us things from the perspective of people, even though He sees things differently.

For example: • In 27:7-8, when Musa (A.

    S.

) saw the burning bush, he thought it was on fire, but it was actually shining with light.

    • In 40:57, Allah says that creating the heavens and the earth would be far greater than re-creating humans, based on what people think.

But for Him, He creates everything with one word: 'kun,' 'Be!

' • In 22:17, Allah says that He will judge between the Muslims, Christians, Jews, and others on Judgment Day.

He uses the same titles that people use to describe themselves, even though the only faith acceptable to Him is Islam (3:19 and 3:85).

STORY 4) ZUL-QARNAIN

83They ask you 'O Prophet' about Zul-Qarnain.

Say, 'I will tell you some of his story.

'

84We certainly established him in the land, and empowered him to do all things.

JOURNEY TO THE WEST

85So he travelled a path,

86until he reached the setting point of the sun.

It appeared to him to be setting in a spring of muddy water.

There he found some people.

We inspired him, 'O Zul-Qarnain!

Either punish them or treat them kindly.

'

87He said, 'As for those who do wrong, we will punish them, then they will be returned to their Lord, Who will put them through a horrible punishment.

'

88But as for those who believe and do good, they will have the best reward, and we will make things easy for them.

Part 2 study note

This is part 2 of the children's lesson for Surah Al-Kahf.

It continues from the previous section with new verses, examples, and short review points for young learners.

If this is your first time studying the lesson, start with part 1 and then return here so the story, meaning, and practice sequence stay clear.

How to study Surah Al-Kahf with children

Use this children's lesson as a guided path: read the short explanation, look at the Arabic verse, listen to related recitation, and return to the full surah when

your child is ready for more detail.

Parents can review one section at a time, ask the child to repeat the main idea, and then continue with the next part or a nearby surah.

This keeps the lesson connected with Quran reading, audio, and daily practice.
