Surah Mariam for kids content

LEARNING POINTS

LEARNING POINTS

  • Allah is very kind and He answers our du'as (supplications).

  • Allah created 'Isa (A.S.) without a father and blessed Zakariya (A.S.) with a son, even though he was very old and his wife was unable to have children.

  • Allah chose the best humans as prophets to deliver His messages.

  • The Creator of the heavens and the earth can easily bring everyone back to life for judgment.

  • It is a horrible lie to say that Allah has children.

  • The faithful will be honoured on Judgment Day, while the wicked will be put to shame.

ZAKARIYA'S PRAYER

1Kaf-Ha-Ya-'Aîn- Şâd.

2.'This is' a remind-er of your Lord's mercy to His servant Zakariya,

3When he cried out to his Lord Privately

4saying, 'My Lord! Surely my bones have become weak, and grey hair has spread all over my head, but I have never been disappointed in my prayer to You, my Lord!'

5And I am concerned about 'the faith of my relatives after me, since my wife is unable to have children.! So bless me with a son-as a favour from You

6who will inherit 'prophethood' from me and the family of Ya'qub, and make him, O Lord, pleasing 'to You'!'

PRAYER ANSWERED

7The angels announced,' 'O Zakari-ya! We give you the good news of a son, whose name will be Yahya-a name We have not given to anyone before.'

8He wondered, 'My Lord! How can I have a son when my wife is unable to have chil-dren, and I have become extremely old?'

9An angel replied, 'So will it be! Your Lord says, It is easy for Me, just as I once created you when you were nothing!'

10Zakariya said, 'My Lord! Give me a sign' He responded, 'Your sign is that you will not be able to speak to people for three full days, even though you are not mute.'

11So he came out to his people from his prayer hall, telling them through signs to praise 'Allah' morning and evening.

YAHYA'S GREAT QUALITIES

12It was later said, 'O Yahya! Take the Book seriously.' And We gave him wis-dom while 'he was still' a child,

13as well as purity and kindness from Us. And be was faithful

14and good to his parents. He was not arrogant or disobedient.

15Peace be upon him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he will be raised back to life!

SIDE STORY

SIDE STORY

  • Many of the early Muslims were going through a very difficult time in Makkah, so the Prophet (ﷺ) asked them to move to Abyssinia (today's Ethiopia). Abyssinia was ruled by An-Najashi, a Christian King, who was known for his kindness and justice.

Once in Abyssinia, the Muslims were able to live peacefully and practice their faith freely. However, the Makkan leaders were not too happy about this. So they sent a team led by 'Amr ibn Al-Aş, along with gifts (bribes) to the King and his advisors, to bring those Muslims back.

When 'Amr came to the King, he told him, "Dear King! Some of our fools have escaped to your land. They refused to accept our faith or your faith, but followed a new, made-up religion. Let me take them back to their own families to discipline them."

  • The King asked the Muslims if they had anything to say, so Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (the Prophet's cousin) spoke on their behalf. Ja'far said, "O King! We were ignorant people who lived a wild life. We worshipped idols, abused the weak, and did shameful things.

Then Allah blessed us with a prophet who is highly respected and honoured. He called us to worship Allah alone, give charity, and be good to each other. So we believed in him, followed the revelations sent down to him, and started to live a life of dignity.

But our people didn't like that, so they kept giving us a hard time. To save us from this abuse, the Prophet (ﷺ) told us to move to your land because you are a good man and you would never allow us to be treated unfairly."

  • The King asked if Ja'far could recite some of the revelations given to the Prophet (ﷺ), so he wisely chose the beginning of this surah. The verses were so powerful and touching that the King and his advisors started to cry.

    He then told Ja'far and the other Muslims to continue to live peacefully in his land, and asked 'Amr to take back his gifts and return to Makkah. {Imam Ahmad}

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

  • There is so much that we can learn from the response of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (R.A.), which led the King (and later 'Amr) to accept Islam:

  • • He arranged his thoughts in a very logical way to deliver a powerful message. • He did it in a very short time, keeping in mind that the King might be busy, so he had to be focused and straight to the point.

    • He won the King's heart by declaring that he was a good man and that he would never allow them to be treated unfairly in his land.

  • • He stated the facts without twisting the truth or offending anyone. • He spoke about the universal values of Islam such as kindness and charity, which are also practiced by Christians and other people of faith.

  • • He decided to use some powerful verses that were relevant to the King, knowing that he was Christian. So he picked the story of Zakariya (A.S.) and Maryam (A.S.) to be able to connect with the King and his advisors.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

  • A group should choose a wise person who can speak clearly to represent them. If you are given only a few minutes to speak, there is no need for a long introduction. Try to make a point in the little time that you have.

  • If there is a need, maybe start with a short story or something interesting to attract people's attention. The topic should be relevant without going into unnecessary details or talking about unimportant things.

For example, if you are asked to speak about Ramadan, don't talk about spicy food or global warming.

  • Illustration
  • If you talk about a problem, don't leave the audience miserable. Suggest some solutions at the end. If you are going to mention several points related to the same topic, maybe sum up each point in one word.

For example, if you are giving a talk about Imam Al-Bukhari, you can sum up his life into 4 words: childhood, education, books, and legacy.

  • If you are asked to recite a passage of the Quran, choose something relevant that you think would have the most impact. I've heard of a case where a person was asked to talk at a wedding and he chose to recite verses about divorce.

If you are asked to lead salah and most people behind you don't know Arabic, maybe consider easy surahs that many of them will understand.

MARYAM VISITED BY JIBRIL

16And mention in the Book 'O Prophet, the story of Maryam when she left her people for. a place in the east,

17keeping out of their sight. Then We sent to her Qur angel, 'jibril,' who appeared in front of her as a man, in perfect form.

18She said, 'I truly seek protection in the Most Kind from you! 'So leave me alone' if you fear Allah.'

19He replied, 'I am only a messenger from your Lord, 'sent' to bless you with a pure son.'

20She won-dered, 'How can I have a son when no man has ever touched me, and I am not indecent?'

21He replied, 'So will it be! Your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me. And We will make him a sign for humanity and a mercy from Us. It is a matter already decided.'

'ISA'S BIRTH

22So she became pregnant with him and left to a distant place.

23Then the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a date tree. She cried, 'Oh no! I wish I were dead and forgotten long before all this!'

24So a voice called out from below her, 'Do not be sad! Your Lord has provided a streanm at your feet.'

25And shake the trunk of this date tree towards you, it will drop fresh, ripe dates for you.

26So eat and drink, and put your heart at ease. But if you see any of the people, say, 'I have made a pledge to the Most Kind to keep silent, so I am not talking to anyone today:'

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

  • Someone may ask, "If Maryam (A.S.) was born over 1,500 years after the death of Prophet Harun (A.S.), how come verse 28 says that she was his sister?" The verse doesn't mention Prophet Harun (A.S.), the brother of Prophet Musa (A.S.). She probably had a good brother named Harun.

    The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked this question, and he said that people used to name their children after their prophets. {Imam Muslim}

  • Some scholars say that maybe Harun was her ancestor, or she was compared to him in goodness. In other words, she was told: "You second Harun!

How can you do something horrible like this?" {Imam Ibn Kathir & Imam Al-Qurtubi} We use the same style when we call a good boxer "the brother of Muhammad Ali" and a good soccer/football player "the second Ronaldo, Messi, or Salah," even though they are not related.

REACTION TO BABY ISA

27Then she returned to | carrying him. They said 'in shock', 'O Maryam! You have really done a horrible thing!'

28O sister of Harun! Your father was not wicked, and your mother was not indecent'

29So she pointed to the baby. They wondered, 'How can we talk to a newborn like this?'

BABY ISA TALKS

30'Isa declared, 'I am truly a servant of Allah. He has written for me to receive the Book and become a prophet.'

31He has made me a blessing wherever I go, and ordered me to pray salah and pay zakah as long as I live,

32and to be good to my mother. He has not made me arro-gant or miserable.

33Peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I will be raised back to life!'

A CHRISTIANS & JEWS DIFFER ON 'ISA

34That is 'Isa, son of Maryam. 'And this is' a word of truth, about which they argue.

35It is not 'possible' for Allah to have a son! Glory be to Him. When He de-cides a matter, He simply says, 'Be!' And it is!

36'Isa also declared, 'Surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him 'alone'. This is the Straight Path.'

37Yet their different' groups have dis-agreed among themselves 'about him. So, it will be horrible for the disbelievers when they face that horrible Day!

38How Clearly will they hear and see the truth On the Day they will come to Us! But to-day those doing wrong have clearly lost their way.

WARNING TO THE DISBELIEVERS

39And warn them 'O Prophet' about the Day of Regret, when all matters will be settled, while they still do not care and refuse to believe.

40Most definitely, the earth and everything on it belongs to Us in the end. And everyone will be re-turned to Us.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

  • It's interesting how Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) invited his father to Islam, according to verses 41-45. There is so much that we can learn from Prophet Ibrahim's (A.S.) style when we talk to our own relatives—if they are not practicing Islam—especially our parents.

He showed great respect to his father by always saying, "O dear father!"

  • • He was very humble when he said that he had received some knowledge that his father didn't have. This is much better than saying that his dad was 'ignorant' of the truth. • He cared about his father's relationship with Allah, not what people were going to say about them.

    • He didn't blame his father for being misguided. He put the blame on Shaytan instead. • He made it clear that he didn't want his father to even be touched by the Fire. • Even when his father threatened him in 19:46, he still responded in a very caring and peaceful way.

  • Illustration
  • Sometimes when some of us start to practice the faith, they look down upon their parents if they are not practicing or if they don't take salah seriously. We learn from Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) that we should try to attract them to the faith, not drive them farther away.

We should be good to our parents, even if they are not Muslim. At the end of the day, it's Allah Who guides, not us.

IBRAHIM AND HIS FATHER, AAZAR

41And mention in the Book 'O Prophet, the story of Ibrahim. He was really a man of f truth and a prophet.

42'Remem-ber' when he said to his father, 'O dear ather! Why do you worship those 'idols' that cannot hear; see, or benefit you in any way?'

43O dear father! I have tru-ly received some knowledge which you have not received, so follow me and I will uide you to the Right Path.

44O dear fa-ther! Do not worship Satan. Surely Satan always disobeys the Most Kind.

45O dear father! I am really afraid that you will be touched by a punishment from the Most Kind, and become Satan's companion 'in Hell?'

AAZAR'S ANGRY RESPONSE

46He threatened, 'How dare you reject my idols, O Ibrahim! If you do not stop, T will certainly stone you 'to death'. So you better get away from me!'

47Ibra-him responded, 'Peace be upon you! I Wll pray to my Lord to forgive you. He has truly been very Kind to me.'

48Now, Iam going to stay away from all of you and from those things you call besides Allah. But I will 'continue to' call upon my Lord 'alone', t trusting that I will never be disappointed in praying to my Lord.'

49So after he had left them and what they worshipped besides Allah, We gave him Ishaq and Ya'qub, and made each of them a prophet.

50We showered them with Our mercy, and blessed them with honourable mention.

PROPHET MUSA

51And mention in the Book 'O Prophet, the story of Musa. He was truly a chosen man, and was a messenger and a proph-et.

52We called him from the right side of Mount Tur, and brought him closer, speaking 'with him' directly.

53And We appointed for him-by Our mercy-his brother, Harun, as a prophet.

PROPHET ISMA'IL

54And mention in the Book 'O Prophet, the story of Isma'il. He was truly a man of his word, and was a messenger anda prophet.

55He used to tell his people to pray şalah and pay zakah. And his Lord was pleased with him.

PROPHET IDRIS

56And mention in the Book 'O Prophet, the story of Idris. He was really a man of truth and a prophet.

57And We raised him to a great status.

OTHER GREAT PROPHETS

58Those were 'some of the prophets that. Allah has blessed from the children of Adam, and from 'the children' of those We carried with Nuh 'in the Ark', and from the children of Ibrahim and Isra'ilS and from those We 'rightly' guided and chose. Whenever the revelations of the Most Kind | were recited to them, they fell m their knees, bowing and weeping.

NEXT GENERATIONS

59But after themn came generations that neglected salah and followed their de-sires. Soon they will face the evil con-sequences.

60As for those who repent, believe, and do good, they will enter Jannah and never be wronged in any way.

61'They will be in' the Gardens of Eternity, promised by the Most Kind to His servants, who have never seen it. His promise will definitely come true.

62There they will never hear any evil talk, only good things. And there they will be served day in and day out.'

63That is Par-adise, which We will award to whoever is faithful among Our servants.
