Al-Humazah (The Backbiters)

Makki SurahMakki Surah

Introduction

This Meccan sûrah is critical of those who slander others and withhold Allah’s bounties. It is made clear that their punishment in Hell is as easy for Allah as the destruction of the evil force mentioned in the next sûrah. In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

Warning to Defamers

1. Woe to every backbiter, slanderer, 2. who amasses wealth (greedily) and counts it (repeatedly), 3. thinking that their wealth will make them immortal! 4. Not at all! Such a person will certainly be tossed into the Crusher. 5. And what will make you realize what the Crusher is? 6. (It is) Allah’s kindled Fire, 7. which rages over the hearts. 8. It will be sealed over them, 9. (tightly secured) with long braces.

Surah Al-Humazah is short enough to read in full, but it still deserves careful study. Read the Arabic text first, then review the translation, and then repeat the verses slowly with recitation. This helps the chapter stay connected to both meaning and sound.

For a stronger reading routine, notice the main theme of the surah, the words that repeat, and the way each verse builds on the previous one.
