REJECTING ALLAH'S REVELATIONS

97Say, 'O Prophet,' "Whoever is an enemy of Jibril should know that he revealed this 'Quran' to your heart by Allah's permission," confirming what came before it—a guide

and good news for the believers.

"

98Whoever is an enemy of Allah, His angels, His messengers, Jibril, and Mikail, then 'let them know that' Allah is certainly the enemy of such disbelievers.

99Surely, We have sent down to you 'O Prophet' clear revelations.

None will deny them except the troublemakers.

100Why is it that every time they make a pledge, a group of them ignores it?

In fact, most of them have no faith.

101And when a messenger from Allah came to them— confirming their own revelations—some of the People of the Book threw Allah's revelations behind their backs as if they

did not know.

102Instead, they practiced magic, which the devils claimed that Su-laiman also practiced.

It was not Sulaiman who disbelieved, but the devils did.

They taught 'magic' to the people, along with what had been revealed to the two angels, Harut and Marut, in Babylon.

The two angels never taught anyone with-out saying, "We are only 'sent as' a test, so do not lose faith.

" Yet people learned 'magic' that caused husband and wife to separate—although their magic could not harm anyone except by Allah's per-mission.

They learned what harmed them and did not benefit them, even though they already knew that whoever buys into magic would have no share in the Next Life.

Miserable indeed was the price for which they sold their souls, if they only knew!

103If they just had faith and kept Allah in mind, there would have been a better reward from Allah, if they only knew!

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

  • Some of the Jews of Madinah used to play with words when they spoke to the Prophet, just to make fun of him.

So, instead of saying, **ra'ina** 'Give us extra attention'—which was also used by the Muslims—those people would twist it a bit to make it sound like a similar

    word that means 'our fool.

' Therefore, this verse was revealed ordering the believers to avoid this word altogether.

The verse recommends another word, **unzurna**, which is similar to **ra'ina**, but couldn't be twisted by those people.

(Imam Ibn Kathir & Imam Al-Qurtubi)

ADVICE TO MUSLIMS

104O believers!

Do not say, "Ra'ina".

But say, "Unzurna," and listen carefully.

And the disbelievers will suffer a painful pun-ishment.

105The disbelievers from the People of the Book and the idol-worship-pers would not want you to receive any blessing from your Lord, but Allah choos-es whoever He wants

for His mercy.

And Allah is the Lord of great blessings.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

  • The **Quran** was revealed over a period of 23 years.

The surahs revealed in Makkah focused on building the foundations of the faith, such as **belief in Allah** and the **Last Day**.

Once the foundations were strong and the Muslims moved to Madinah, they were ordered to **fast in Ramadan** and perform **hajj**, and certain rulings were replaced with others

when the Muslim community was ready for change.

  • The process of 'replacing one ruling with another' is called **naskh**, which is mentioned in verse 106.

The wisdom of **naskh** was to slowly prepare the Muslims for the final ruling or to make things easy for them.

For example, drinking alcohol was forbidden over 3 stages (see 2:219, 4:43, and 5:90).

According to **'Aishah** (the Prophet's wife), if drinking was banned from day one (when people were still taking baby steps in the faith), it would have been very

difficult for many to become Muslim.

    (Imam Al-Bukhari)

  • **Naskh** has also common in previous revelations.

    For example,

  • * According to the Bible, it was allowed in the law of **Ya'qub** to marry 2 sisters at the same time, but this was later banned by **Musa**.

  • * Divorcing one's wife was allowed in the law of **Musa**, but later **'Isa** put restrictions on it.

  • * In the Bible, certain types of meat were allowed then forbidden and others were forbidden then allowed.

MORE ADVICE TO MUSLIMS

106If We ever replace a verse or cause it to be forgotten, We replace it with a bet-ter or similar one.

Don't you know that Allah has power over all things?

107Don't you know that the kingdom of the heav-ens and the earth belongs 'only' to Allah, and you have no protector or helper oth-er than Allah?

108Or do you 'believers' intend to challenge your Messenger as Musa was challenged before?

And who-ever trades belief for disbelief has truly strayed from the Right Way.

109Many among the people of the Book wish they could turn you back to disbelief because of their envy, 'even' after the truth has been made clear to

them.

But forgive and bear with them until Allah brings His decision.

Indeed, Allah has power over all things.

110Pray salah and pay zakah.

Whatever good you send ahead for your-selves, you will 'certainly' find 'its re-ward' with Allah.

Surely Allah sees what you do.

FALSE CLAIMS

111The Jews and Christians each claim that none will enter Jannah except those of their own faith.

These are their de-sires.

Reply, 'O Prophet,' "Show 'me' your proof if what you say is true.

"

112But no!

Whoever submits to Allah and does good will have their reward with their Lord.

There will be no fear for them, and they will never be sad.

113The Jews say, "The Christian beliefs are based on nothing" and the Christians say, "The Jewish beliefs are based on nothing," al-though both recite the Books.

And those 'idol-worshippers' who have no knowl-edge say the same 'about people of faith'.

Surely Allah will judge between them on Judgment Day about their differences.

HONOURING HOLY PLACES OF WORSHIP

114Who does more wrong than those who prevent Allah's Name from being mentioned in His places of worship and work hard to destroy them?

Such peo-ple have no right to enter these places except with fear.

For them there is dis-grace in this world, and they will suffer a horrible punishment in the Next Life.

115The east and the west belong to Allah, so wherever you turn you are facing to-wards Allah.

Surely Allah is full of bless-ings and knowledge.

ALLAH DOESN'T NEED CHILDREN

116They say, "Allah has children.

" Glo-ry be to Him!

In fact, whatever is in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him—they are all under His control.

117'He is' the Creator of the heavens and the earth!

When He decides something, He simply tells it, "Be!

" And it is!

TRUE GUIDANCE

118Those who have no knowledge say, "If only Allah would speak to us or a sign would come to us!

" The same was said by those who came before.

Their hearts are all alike.

Indeed, We have made the signs clear for people of sure faith.

119We have certainly sent you with the truth 'O Prophet' as a giver of good news and a warner.

And you will not be responsi-ble for the people of Hell.

120The Jews and Christians will never be satisfied with you until you follow their faith.

Say, "Allah's guidance is the only true guid-ance.

" And if you followed their desires after 'all' the knowledge that has come to you, there would be none to protect or help you against Allah.

121'The faithful of those We gave the Book follow it as it should be followed.

They 'truly' believe in it.

As for those who reject it, they are the losers.

REMINDER OF ALLAH'S FAVOUR

122O Children of Isra'il!

Remember My favours upon you and how I honoured you above the others.

123And guard yourselves against the Day when no soul will be able to benefit another.

No bribe will be taken.

No words of defence will be accepted.

And no help will be given.

PROPHET IBRAHIM IN MAKKAH

124'Remember' when Ibrahim was tested by his Lord with 'certain' tasks, he completed 'perfectly'.

Allah promised, "I will certainly make you a role model 'for the people'.

" Ibrahim asked, "Is this also true for some of my children?

" Allah replied, "My promise does not include those who do wrong!

"

125And 'remem-ber' when We made the Holy House a place of gathering and a centre of safe-ty for all people 'saying', "'You may' take the standing-place of Ibrahim

as a site of prayer.

" And We ordered Ibrahim and Isma'il to purify My House for those who circle it, who stay there for worship, and who kneel and bow down 'in

salah'.

IBRAHIM'S PRAYERS

126And 'remember' when Ibrahim said, "My Lord!

Make this city 'of Makkah' se-cure and provide fruits to its people— those among them who believe in Allah and the Last Day.

" He answered, "As for those who disbelieve, I will let them en-joy themselves for a little while, then I will force them into the punishment of the

Fire.

What an evil destination!

"

RAISING THE FOUNDATION OF THE KA'BAH

127And 'remember' when Ibrahim raised the foundation of the Holy House with Isma'il, 'both praying,

128' 'Our Lord!

Accept 'this' from us.

You 'alone' truly hear and know 'everything.

' Our Lord!

Make us both 'fully' submit to You,' and 'raise' a nation from our children that will submit to You.

' Show us our acts of worship, and turn to us in mercy.

You are truly willing to accept repentance and are full of mer-cy.

129Our Lord!

Raise from among them a messenger who will recite to them Your revelations, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them.

Indeed, You 'alone' are the Almighty and Wise.

"

TRUE FAITH IN ALLAH

130And who would reject the faith of Ibrahim except a fool!

We certainly chose him in this life, and in the Next Life he will surely be among the faithful.

131When his Lord ordered him, "Submit!

" he responded, "I submit to the Lord of the universe.

"

132This was the advice of Ibra-him-as well as Ya'qub-to his children, "Saying", "Indeed, Allah has chosen this faith for you; so do not die except in 'full' submission

'to Him'.

133Or were you there when death came to Ya'qub?

He asked his children, "Who will you wor-ship after my death?

" They replied, "We will 'continue to' worship Your God, the God of your fathers-Ibrahim, Isma'il,and Ishaq-the One God.

And to Him we 'fully' submit.

"

134That community has already gone.

They will be paid back for their deeds, as you will be paid for yours.

And you will not be responsible for what they did.

PROPHETS OF ISLAM

135The Jews and Christians each claim, "Follow our faith to be 'rightly' guided.

" Say, 'O Prophet,' "No!

We follow the faith of Ibrahim, the upright-who was not an idol-worshipper.

"

136Say, 'O believers,' "We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Ya'qub and his grandsons; and what

was given to Musa, 'Isa, and other prophets from their Lord.

We do not treat any of them dif-ferently.

" And to Him we 'fully' submit.

"

137So if they believe in what you believe, then they will surely be 'rightly' guided.

But if they refuse, they are simply unjust 'the truth'.

But Allah will protect you from their evil; He hears and knows 'ev-erything'.

MANY MESSENGERS, ONE MESSAGE

138This is the 'natural' Way set by Allah.

And who is better than Allah in setting a way?

We worship 'none but' Him.

139Say, "Would you argue with us about Allah, while He is our Lord and your Lord?

We are responsible for our deeds and you are responsible for yours.

And we are faithful to Him 'alone'.

140Or do you claim that Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Ya'qub and his grandsons were all Jews or Christians?

" Say, "Who has more knowledge: you or Allah?

" Who does more wrong than those who hide the ev-idence they received from Allah?

And Allah is never unaware of what you do.

141That community has already gone.

They will be paid back for their deeds, as you will be paid for yours.

And you will not be responsible for what they did.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

  • For several months after moving to Madinah, the Muslims faced towards **Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa (in Jerusalem)** when they prayed.

However, deep in his heart, the Prophet was hoping that one day he would face towards the **Ka'bah (in Makkah)** Instead, finally, the good news came in verse

144, and the Muslims were ordered to change their **qiblah (direction of prayer)** to Makkah.

Of course, the faithful immediately obeyed the new order.

As for the hypocrites and some Jews, they started to make fun of the change.

The following passages declare that it doesn't matter where a person turns in salah, what matters is obedience to Allah.

Some of the **sahabah** were worried that those Muslims who had passed away before the **qiblah** changed would lose the reward of their past prayers.

So, verse 143 was revealed, telling them that no reward is lost with Allah.

    (Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim)

NEW DIRECTION OF PRAYER

142The foolish among the people will ask, "Why did they turn away from the direction of salah they used to face?

" Say, 'O Prophet,' "The east and west belong 'only' to Allah.

He guides whoever He wants to the Straight Path.

"

143And so We have made you 'believers' an ideal community so that you may be witness-es over humanity, and that the Messenger may be a witness over you.

We assigned your former direction of salah only to identify those who would stay faithful to the Messenger from those who would lose faith.

It was certainly a difficult test except for those 'rightly' guided by Allah.

But Allah would never let your 'past acts of faith go to waste.

Allah is really Kind and Merciful to people.

144We definite-ly see you 'O Prophet' turning your face towards heaven.

Now We will make you turn towards a direction of salah that will please you.

So turn your face to-wards the Holy Mosque 'in Makkah wherever you are, turn your faces to-wards it.

Those who were given the Book certainly know this to be the truth from their Lord.

And Allah is never unaware of what they do.

145Even if you brought every proof to the People of the Book, they would not accept your direction 'of salah' and you would not accept theirs.

They would not even accept each other's direction.

And if you followed their de-sires after 'all' the knowledge that has come to you, then you would certainly be one of those doing wrong.

HIDING THE TRUTH ABOUT THE PROPHET

146Those We had given the Book rec-ognize him 'to be a true prophet' just as they recognize their own children.

Yet a group of them hides the truth in-tentionally.

147'This is' the truth from your Lord, so do not ever be one of those who doubt.

148Everyone turns to their own direction.

So, you 'Muslims' should compete with each other in doing good.

Wherever you are, Allah will bring every-one together 'for judgment'.

Surely Allah has power over all things.

ORDER TO FACE THE KA'BAH

149Wherever you are 'O Prophet', turn your face towards the Holy Mosque.

This is certainly the truth from your Lord.

And Allah is never unaware of what you all' do.

150Again, wherever you are, turn your face towards the Holy Mosque.

And wherever you 'believers' are, face towards it, so that people can't argue against you, except those among them doing wrong.

Do not fear them; fear Me, so that I may 'continue to' perfect My fa-vour upon you and so you may be 'right-ly' guided.

ALLAH'S FAVOUR UPON THE BELIEVERS

151Now, since We have sent you a mes-senger from among yourselves-recit-ing to you Our revelations, purifying you, teaching you the Book and wisdom, and teaching you what you

never knew

152Remember Me; I will remember you.

And thank Me, and never be ungrateful.

PATIENCE IN DIFFICULT TIMES

153O believers!

Seek help through pa-tience and prayer.

Surely, Allah is with those who are patient.

154Never say that those who lost their lives in the cause of Allah are dead-in fact, they are alive!

But you do not realize it

155We will certainly test you with a bit of fear and hunger, and loss of property, life, and crops.

Give good news to

156those who are patient- those who say, when struck by a disaster, "Surely to Allah we belong and to Him we will 'all' return.

"

157They will receive Allah's blessings and mercy, and they are 'rightly' guided.

Part 3 study note

This is part 3 of the children's lesson for Surah Al-Baqarah.

It continues from the previous section with new verses, examples, and short review points for young learners.

If this is your first time studying the lesson, start with part 1 and then return here so the story, meaning, and practice sequence stay clear.

How to study Surah Al-Baqarah with children

Use this children's lesson as a guided path: read the short explanation, look at the Arabic verse, listen to related recitation, and return to the full surah when

your child is ready for more detail.

Parents can review one section at a time, ask the child to repeat the main idea, and then continue with the next part or a nearby surah.

This keeps the lesson connected with Quran reading, audio, and daily practice.
