Aṣ-Ṣaff (The ˹Solid˺ Ranks)

Madni Surah

Introduction

The believers are instructed to strive in Allah’s cause in solid battle formations (verse 4), hence the name of this Medinian sûrah. The disciples of Jesus, who stood up for Allah, are cited as an example for the believers to emulate. The believers are reassured that the truth will prevail despite the disbelievers’ unrelenting plots against it. Those who stand up for Allah are promised great rewards in both worlds. The next sûrah provides more instructions to the believers. In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

Allah Is Glorified by All

1. Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth glorifies Allah. For He (alone) is the Almighty, All-Wise.

سَبَّحَ لِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ

Do What You Say

2. O believers! Why do you say what you do not do? 3. How despicable it is in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do! 4. Surely Allah loves those who fight in His cause in (solid) ranks as if they were one concrete structure.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ

كَبُرَ مَقْتًا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ أَن تَقُولُوا مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِى سَبِيلِهِۦ صَفًّا كَأَنَّهُم بُنْيَـٰنٌ مَّرْصُوصٌ

Moses and His People

5. (Remember, O Prophet,) when Moses said to his people, “O my people! Why do you hurt me when you already know I am Allah’s messenger to you?” So when they (persistently) deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. For Allah does not guide the rebellious people.

وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِۦ يَـٰقَوْمِ لِمَ تُؤْذُونَنِى وَقَد تَّعْلَمُونَ أَنِّى رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَيْكُمْ ۖ فَلَمَّا زَاغُوٓا أَزَاغَ ٱللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُمْ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

Jesus and the Israelites

6. And (remember) when Jesus, son of Mary, said, “O children of Israel! I am truly Allah’s messenger to you, confirming the Torah which came before me, and giving good news of a messenger after me whose name will be Aḥmad.” Yet when the Prophet came to them with clear proofs, they said, “This is pure magic.”

وَإِذْ قَالَ عِيسَى ٱبْنُ مَرْيَمَ يَـٰبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ إِنِّى رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَيْكُم مُّصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَىَّ مِنَ ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ وَمُبَشِّرًۢا بِرَسُولٍ يَأْتِى مِنۢ بَعْدِى ٱسْمُهُۥٓ أَحْمَدُ ۖ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ قَالُوا هَـٰذَا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ
