Surah Al-Baqarah for kids content
(SINCERE CHARITY)
265And the example of those who donate their wealth, hoping to please Allah and prove their true faith, is that of a garden on a fertile hill; when
heavy rain falls, it gives twice its normal produce.
If no heavy rain falls, a drizzle is enough.
And Allah sees what you do.
(WASTED REWARD)
266Would any of you like to have a garden with date trees, grapes, and all kinds of fruits, with running streams, and as that person grows very old
with dependent children, the garden is hit by a fiery tornado, burning it all up?
This is how Allah makes His revelations clear to you, so perhaps you will reflect.

Hamzah and his neighbor Salman were blessed with apple farms.
Both were the richest people in town.
Every year when they collected their harvest, Salman paid zakah from the best of his apples.
As for Hamzah, he always picked low-quality apples to give out.
He was even able to convince Salman to do the same by telling him, 'We need to sell the good fruits to make money.
The poor will eat anything you give them.
They just need to close their eyes and eat.
' A few years later, Hamzah borrowed a lot of money from the bank to build a factory in the city.
Salman asked if he could partner with him and share the profit, but Hamzah refused because he wanted to keep all the profit for himself.
Salman was very angry with him.
Long story short: the factory project failed, the bank took over Hamzah's farms, and he became very poor.
Eventually, Hamzah came to Salman, asking for some fruits from zakah.
Sure enough, Salman offered him some low-quality apples.
When Hamzah protested, 'How can I eat this junk?
' Salman replied, 'Just close your eyes and eat!

A scholar named Al-Asma'i was in the market one day.
He noticed that a man was stealing fruits.
When he followed the man, he was surprised to see him donating the stolen fruits to the poor.
Al-Asma'i asked him, 'What do you think you are doing?
' The man argued, 'You don't understand.
I'm doing business with Allah!
I steal the fruits, I get one sin.
Then I give them as a charity; I get 10 rewards.
I lose one reward for stealing, then Allah keeps 9 rewards for me.
Got it now?
' Al-Asma'i responded, 'You fool!
Allah is good and He only accepts what is good.
When you steal something you get one sin, but when you donate it you don't get any rewards.
You are just like someone who tries to clean his dirty shirt with mud.

Imam Al-Hassan Al-Basri (a great scholar) went with some people to visit a dying man named Ibn Al-Ahtam.
The dying man kept looking at a big box in the room then asked the imam, 'What do you think I should do about this box that has
100,000 dinars (gold coins)?
I've never paid zakah on that money, and I never used it to help my relatives.
' The imam wondered, 'What!
Did you collect all this money then?
' The man replied, 'Just to be secure and rich.
' Then the man died.
After his funeral, the imam told the family of Ibn Al-Ahtam, 'Learn a lesson from his life.
Shaytan scared him of becoming poor, so he kept all that money to himself.
When he died, he took nothing with him.
Now, this money is yours, and you will be questioned about it on Judgment Day.
' (Ibn 'Abd Rabbih in his book Al-'Iqd Al-Farid 'The Unique Necklace')

Verse 267 teaches us that Allah accepts only what is good and that people shouldn't donate bad things that they themselves wouldn't be willing to accept.
As for verse 268, it teaches us that Shaytan doesn't want people to share Allah's blessings or gain His rewards, so he scares them about becoming poor.
But Allah tells us that our money will not decrease when we give, because Allah will put barakah in it and multiply our rewards.
(QUALITY CHARITY)
267O believers!
Donate from the best of what you have earned and of what We have produced for you from the earth.
Do not pick out worthless things for donation, which you yourselves would only accept with closed eyes.
And know that Allah is not in need and He deserves all praise.
268The Devil makes you scared of becoming poor and encourages you to do shameful things, while Allah promises you forgiveness and 'great' favours from Him.
And Allah is full of blessings and knowledge.
269He gives wisdom to whoever He wants.
And whoever is given wisdom is certainly blessed with a great privilege.
But none will keep this in mind except those who truly understand.
(DONATING PUBLICLY & PRIVATELY)
270Whatever charities you give or pledges you make are definitely known to Allah.
And those doing wrong will have no helpers.
271To give charity publicly is good, but to give to the poor privately is better for you, and will clear you of your sins.
And Allah is fully Aware of what you do.
272You are not responsible for people's guidance 'O Prophet'; it is Allah Who guides whoever He wants.
Whatever you 'believers' spend in charity is for your own good, as long as you do so to please Allah.
Whatever you donate will be fully paid back to you, and you will not be denied any reward.
273'Charity is' for the needy who are too busy in the cause of Allah to move about in the land 'for work'.
Those unfamiliar with their situation will think they do not need 'charity' because they are shy to ask.
You can recognize them by their appearance.
They do not keep begging people.
Whatever you give in charity is definitely known to Allah.
274Those who spend their wealth in charity day and night, privately and publicly—their reward is with their Lord.
There will be no fear for them, and they will never be sad.

Michael had a decent job, but he didn't have any savings.
In December 2019, he had to borrow $20,000 from the bank to pay for his wife's major surgery.
The bank charged him 7% interest.
His plan was to pay back the loan over the next 2-3 years.
However, the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and many businesses closed down.
Thousands lost their jobs, including Michael.
Soon, he was unable to pay the bank so he had to borrow from a lending company with a whopping 30% interest rate.
Eventually, it became impossible for him to pay back the loan and interest.
He even failed to pay his rent.
The lending company hasn't been willing to make things easy for him.
To survive, Michael will either be homeless or in jail.

Hassan had a decent job, but he didn't have any savings.
In December 2019, he had to borrow $20,000 from 2 of his Muslim friends, who were business partners.
His plan was to repay that loan after a year.
However, the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and thousands lost their jobs, including Hassan.
When he explained to the 2 brothers that he couldn't pay as planned, they told him not to worry and gave him another year to pay.
But due to the pandemic, Hassan couldn't secure a job.
So, each of the 2 brothers dropped his share of the loan as a charity.
Both were inspired by verse 280 of this surah.
They also hired him to work for their company.
Hassan's life is now back to normal, thanks to the mercy of Islam.

WORDS OF WISDOM
- •
If someone borrows money, they should make the intention to pay it back.
But if someone is going through financial difficulty, we should make things easier, not harder, for them.
The Quran (2:280) and the Sunnah encourage people to have mercy on each other.
The Prophet (PBUH) said, 'There was a business owner who used to lend money to people.
When someone had a hard time paying back the loan, that business owner would tell his workers, 'Forgive him, so Allah may forgive us.
' And Allah forgave him.
' {Imam Al-Bukhari}

WORDS OF WISDOM

The Islamic financial system is based on humanity and profit, not profit alone.
People are encouraged to make money by either selling something or providing a service, not by charging interest.
Islam teaches people to work, enjoy their wealth, and take care of others.
The following famous 2 cows' example shows the difference between Islamic finance and other systems: * **Islam:** You buy 2 cows, you hire someone to take care of
them, sell the milk, make money, grow the business, and give charity to the poor.
* **Capitalism:** You buy 2 cows, the government charges you a lot of taxes so the super-rich don't have to pay any taxes.
You borrow money from the bank to buy 5 more cows.
When you are not able to pay back, the bank takes all your cows.
* **Democracy:** You buy 2 cows, you sell their milk as organic, even though you feed them chemicals.
When the cows die, the government blames it on Mexico, then invades Iraq.
* **Communism:** You buy 2 cows, the government takes both and sells you their milk.
* **Socialism:** You buy 2 cows, the government gives 1 to your neighbor, and sends you the milk you need.
* **Fascism:** You buy 2 cows, the government kills both, throws the milk away, then puts you in jail.
WARNING AGAINST INTEREST-MONEY
275Those who charge interest will stand 'on Judgment Day' like those driven to madness by Satan's touch.
That is because they say, "Trade is no different than interest.
" But Allah has allowed trade and forbidden interest.
Whoever quits—after having received warning from their Lord—may keep their previous gains, and their case is left to Allah.
As for those who continue, they will be the people of the Fire.
They will be there forever.
276Allah has made interest fruitless and charity fruitful.
And Allah does not like any ungrateful sinner.
277Indeed, those who believe, do good, pray salah, and pay zakah will receive their reward from their Lord.
There will be no fear for them, and they will never be sad.
278O believers!
Fear Allah, and give up remaining interest if you are 'true' believers.
279If you do not, then be warned of a war with Allah and His Messenger!
But if you repent, you may keep your original amount—not causing or suffering loss.
280If it is difficult for someone to pay 'you' back a debt, delay it until a time of ease.
And if you waive it as an act of charity, it will be better for you, if you only knew.
281Watch for the Day when you will all be returned to Allah, then every soul will be fully paid back for what it has done.
None will be treated unfairly.

The Prophet (PBUH) said that Allah created Adam (PBUH), and then showed him all his children who would ever exist until Judgment Day.
Among his children, Adam (PBUH) spotted a man with a very bright face and asked Allah who that man was.
Allah told him that it was Dawood (PBUH).
Then Adam (PBUH) said, 'How long is he going to live?
' Allah answered, 'Sixty years.
' When he asked Allah to give Dawood (PBUH) another 40 years to complete 100, Allah told Adam (PBUH) that it could be done only from the 1,000
years that he himself was going to live.
Adam (PBUH) agreed to donate those 40 years and a written agreement was produced, with the angels as witnesses.
Centuries later, when the angels of death came to take the soul of Adam (PBUH) at the age of 960, he objected, 'But I still have 40 years
to live!
' When the angels told him that he had already donated those 40 years to Dawood (PBUH), he denied doing it because he had forgotten.
So, Allah showed him the agreement and the witnesses.
{Imam Ahmad}

SIDE STORY

People often forget things in their busy lives, from personal belongings like keys and appointments, to even serious matters like forgetting children in a car.
This forgetfulness can lead to significant consequences, as seen with a man who lost $250 million in Bitcoins in 2021 because he couldn't remember his password.
- •
A humorous, yet telling, true story involves a brother who, after returning from the masjid, frantically searched for his car, only to realize by checking his house cameras
that he had driven it to the masjid and then walked home, leaving the car there.
- •
These anecdotes highlight the crucial need for written agreements.
Whether it's a marriage gift that later causes arguments because it wasn't specified in the contract, or a loan that leads to court disputes because it wasn't documented,
forgetting can lead to significant interpersonal and legal complications.

WORDS OF WISDOM
- •
To solve many of these problems, Islam teaches us to write things down.
Verse 282 (the longest ayah in the Quran) instructs believers to record loans in all fairness and to have witnesses.
- •
It's important to highlight two words in this verse: 'Rajulain' (which is stronger than 'li') and 'Shahidayn' (which is stronger than 'Ali').
Both words indicate that two experienced and reliable men should witness the agreement, not just any two men.
- •
If two qualified men can't be found, then one man and two women will witness.
So, if one of them forgets or is unable to go and tell the judge what happened, the other woman will do the job.
When this verse was revealed more than 1,400 years ago, most women didn't travel for business or have experience with writing and witnessing loan agreements.
- •
As for speaking in front of a judge, it can be done by men and women.
In Islamic law, a hadith reported by a woman (like 'Aishah) is as important as a hadith reported by a man (like Abu Hurairah).
Also, if someone saw the new moon of Ramadan, some scholars say that people should fast, whether it was seen by a reliable man or woman.
WRITING A DEBT CONTRACT
282O believers!
When you agree on a loan for a fixed period of time, write it down.
Let the writer be fair to both sides.
The writer should not refuse to write as instructed by Allah.
Let the writer record what the borrower dictates, keeping Allah in mind and not cheating in the debt.
If the borrower is naive, weak, or unable to dictate, let their guardian dictate for them in all fairness.
And call upon two of your men to witness.
If two men cannot be found, then one man and two women of your choice will witness—so if one of the women forgets the other may remind her.
The witnesses should not refuse to come when they are asked to.
You should not be against writing contracts for a fixed period, whether the amount is small or large.
This is more just 'for you' in the sight of Allah, and more suitable to establish evidence and remove doubts.
However, if you are doing a business exchange with each other on the spot, then there is no need for you to write it down, but call upon
witnesses when the deal is finalized.
Let there be no harm to the writer or the witnesses.
If you do, then it will be an offence from you.
Keep Allah in mind; it is Allah Who teaches you.
And Allah has 'perfect' knowledge of all things.
283If you are on a journey and a writer cannot be found, then something can be taken as a deposit.
If you trust each other, then 'there is no need for a deposit, but' the borrower should honour this trust 'by paying back the debt'—and let them fear
Allah, their Lord.
You 'witnesses' should not hide the truth.
Whoever hides it, their hearts will truly be sinful.
And Allah 'fully' knows what you do.

ALLAH KNOWS EVERYTHING
284Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth belongs to Allah.
Whether you show what is in your hearts or hide it, Allah will call you to account for it.
Then He will forgive whoever He wants and punish whoever He wants.
And Allah has power over all things.
285The Messenger believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and so do the believers.
They all believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers.
"They declare, "We do not treat any of His messengers differently.
" And they say, "We hear and obey.
'We seek' Your forgiveness, our Lord!
And to You 'alone' is the final return.
"
286Allah does not task any soul except with what it can do.
All good will be for its own benefit, and all evil will be for its own loss.
"The believers pray," "Our Lord!
Do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake.
Our Lord!
Do not make things difficult for us as You did with those before us
287Our Lord!
Do not burden us with what we cannot carry.
Excuse us, forgive us, and have mercy on us.
You are our 'only' Guardian.
So give us victory over the disbelieving people.

WORDS OF WISDOM
- •
The last 2 verses of this surah are very special.
As mentioned in the tafsir of Surah 17, Ibn Abbas said that the Prophet received three gifts directly from Allah during the Night Journey: 1.
The 5 daily prayers.
2.
The last 2 verses of Surah Al-Baqarah.
3.
The promise that Allah will forgive the big sins of Muslims who never make anyone equal to Him and die upon Islam.
(Imam Muslim) The Prophet said, "The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah are enough for the person who recites them at night.
" (Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim)
Part 8 study note
This is part 8 of the children's lesson for Surah Al-Baqarah.
It continues from the previous section with new verses, examples, and short review points for young learners.
If this is your first time studying the lesson, start with part 1 and then return here so the story, meaning, and practice sequence stay clear.
How to study Surah Al-Baqarah with children
Use this children's lesson as a guided path: read the short explanation, look at the Arabic verse, listen to related recitation, and return to the full surah when
your child is ready for more detail.
Parents can review one section at a time, ask the child to repeat the main idea, and then continue with the next part or a nearby surah.
This keeps the lesson connected with Quran reading, audio, and daily practice.
