Introduction

This Meccan sûrah stresses the fact that people will be accountable on Judgment Day for their ingratitude to their Lord. The scene of the people emerging from their graves (verse 9) is elaborated upon in the next sûrah. In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

Human Ingratitude

1. By the galloping, panting horses, 2. striking sparks of fire (with their hoofs), 3. launching raids at dawn, 4. stirring up (clouds of) dust, 5. and penetrating into the heart of enemy lines! 6. Surely humankind is ungrateful to their Lord— 7. and they certainly attest to this— 8. and they are truly extreme in their love of (worldly) gains. 9. Do they not know that when the contents of the graves will be spilled out, 10. and the secrets of the hearts will be laid bare— 11. surely their Lord is All-Aware of them on that Day.
وَٱلْعَـٰدِيَـٰتِ ضَبْحًا
١
فَٱلْمُورِيَـٰتِ قَدْحًا
٢
فَٱلْمُغِيرَٰتِ صُبْحًا
٣
فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِۦ نَقْعًا
٤
فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِۦ جَمْعًا
٥
إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لِرَبِّهِۦ لَكَنُودٌ
٦
وَإِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ لَشَهِيدٌ
٧
وَإِنَّهُۥ لِحُبِّ ٱلْخَيْرِ لَشَدِيدٌ
٨
۞ أَفَلَا يَعْلَمُ إِذَا بُعْثِرَ مَا فِى ٱلْقُبُورِ
٩
وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِى ٱلصُّدُورِ
١٠
إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّخَبِيرٌۢ

Full text of Surah Al-'Ādiyāt with translation

Surah Al-'Ādiyāt, verse 1

وَٱلْعَـٰدِيَـٰتِ ضَبْحًا
By the galloping, panting horses,

Surah Al-'Ādiyāt, verse 2

فَٱلْمُورِيَـٰتِ قَدْحًا
striking sparks of fire (with their hoofs),

Surah Al-'Ādiyāt, verse 3

فَٱلْمُغِيرَٰتِ صُبْحًا
launching raids at dawn,

Surah Al-'Ādiyāt, verse 4

فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِۦ نَقْعًا
stirring up (clouds of) dust,

Surah Al-'Ādiyāt, verse 5

فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِۦ جَمْعًا
and penetrating into the heart of enemy lines!

Surah Al-'Ādiyāt, verse 6

إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لِرَبِّهِۦ لَكَنُودٌ
Surely humankind is ungrateful to their Lord—

Surah Al-'Ādiyāt, verse 7

وَإِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ لَشَهِيدٌ
and they certainly attest to this—

Surah Al-'Ādiyāt, verse 8

وَإِنَّهُۥ لِحُبِّ ٱلْخَيْرِ لَشَدِيدٌ
and they are truly extreme in their love of (worldly) gains.

Surah Al-'Ādiyāt, verse 9

۞ أَفَلَا يَعْلَمُ إِذَا بُعْثِرَ مَا فِى ٱلْقُبُورِ
Do they not know that when the contents of the graves will be spilled out,

Surah Al-'Ādiyāt, verse 10

وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِى ٱلصُّدُورِ
and the secrets of the hearts will be laid bare—

Surah Al-'Ādiyāt, verse 11

إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّخَبِيرٌۢ
surely their Lord is All-Aware of them on that Day.
