Introduction

This Meccan sûrah is named after Prophet Abraham (ﷺ) who, upon settling his wife Hagar and his son Ishmael in what later became the city of Mecca, invokes Allah to protect his descendants from idol-worship, a practice that Meccans were entrenched in at the time of this revelation (verses 35-41). The sûrah also refers to some of Allah’s favours, which are met with ingratitude and denial. A sizable portion reveals how the disbelievers will be let down by Satan and tormented in Hell, wishing they had believed, according to the next sûrah (15:2). In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

Warning to the Disbelievers

1. Alif-Lãm-Ra.

(This is) a Book which We have revealed to you (O Prophet) so that you may lead people out of darkness and into light, by the Will of

their Lord, to the Path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy—

2. Allah, to Whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.

And woe to the disbelievers because of a severe torment!

3. (They are) the ones who favour the life of this world over the Hereafter and hinder (others) from the Way of Allah, striving to make it (appear) crooked.

It is they who have gone far astray.

الٓر ۚ كِتَـٰبٌ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَيْكَ لِتُخْرِجَ ٱلنَّاسَ مِنَ ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ١

ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ وَوَيْلٌ لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ مِنْ عَذَابٍ شَدِيدٍ٢

ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَحِبُّونَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا عَلَى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا ۚ أُولَـٰٓئِكَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍۭ بَعِيدٍ٣
