Surah Ar-Raḥmân for kids content

LEARNING POINTS
- •
This is an invitation to humans and jinn to acknowledge Allah's many blessings
- •
Based on how much everyone appreciated Allah's favours and obeyed Him, they will be divided into 3 groups on Judgment Day:
- •
1 The disbelievers (the people of the left who will receive their book of deeds in their left hand).
- •
2 The average believers (the people of the right who will receive their book of deeds in their right hand).
- •
3 And the best of the believers.

WORDS OF WISDOM

There are two types of people in this world. Those who have the 'bee eye' and those who have the 'fly eye. A bee and a fly see the same things when they are in the air. However, the bee chooses to land on flowers, and the fly chooses to land on gar- bage. Some people are able to see and appreciate Allah's bless- ings. Others fail to see any good in their life and only whine about negative things.

SIDE STORY
- •
An old man did a social experiment to see how people would react to good and bad things. For 3 straight days he threw 10-dollar bills from his balcony on the 2nd floor. He noticed that people always picked up the money and left right away. For the next 3 days, he was throwing empty juice boxes and chip bags. He noticed that many people now acted differently. They picked up the empty boxes and bags, looked up, right, and left, and started cussing. He concluded that many people fail to thank for the good, and only complain about the bad.

The Prophet asked Abu Zarr, Do you think a person with a lot of money is rich and a person with no money is poor? Abu Zarr answered, Yes. The Prophet told him that a person with a grateful heart is rich even if they have nothing, and a person with an ungrateful heart is poor even if they have lots of money. (Recorded by Imam Ibn Hibban)}

A Canadian teacher asked his 3rd grade students to make a list of what they thought were the 7 modern wonders of the world. Most students listed famous wonders like the pyramids of Egypt, the Great Wall of China, and Taj Mahal. Some even listed Disneyland and Tim Hortons. One girl (named Yasmin) was the last to submit her list. She wrote:
- •
1.The eyes we see with.
- •
2.The ears we hear with.
- •
3.The tongue we taste with..
- •
4.The nose we smell with.
- •
5.The skin we feel with..
- •
6.The face we smile with.
- •
7.And the heart we love with.
- •
Yasmin said, These are the most precious blessings that we don't usually give thanks for. Our life would be difficult without any of them. We should always say, 'Al-hum-du-lillah'

According to the following passage, everyone and everything in this universe needs Allah. Even those who say He doesn't exist still need Him for their existence. Who gives them the air they breathe? Who gives them the water they drink? Who controls their heartbeats? In comparison, if we like someone, we give them what they want. But if we dislike someone, we don't give them anything. But Allah never cuts anyone's air supply just because they don't believe in Him. He never stops His mercy Ar-Rahman to someone just because He doesn't like what they do. He only judges them in the Next Life. This is why this surah calls Him Ar-Rahman (the Most Kind).

This surah lists many of Allah's blessings. The fol- lowing passage is a 'warning against punishment, which is counted as a blessing from Allah, But why? To understand this, think about this story: Jamal and his family are travelling on the highway. They notice two sets of signs on the road:
- •
- ▪
One set gives information about services available along the highway such as rest ar- eas, gas stations, and restaurants.
- ▪
The other set gives warnings against going over the speed limit as well as accidents and fires ahead.
- ▪
Jamal appreciates both sets of signs because they make his trip safe and comfortable, This is also true for 'wet floor' signs because they protect us from slipping. In the same way, we should appreciate the following warning, be cause it will keep us safe from punishment on Judgment Day.
