LEARNING POINTS

LEARNING POINTS

During the time of the Prophet, some idol-worshippers questioned Judgment Day, and made fun of Allah's ability to bring people back to life.

In response, Allah revealed this surah, telling them to just open their eyes and look around to see what He has created.

Allah has the power to bring everyone back to life for judgment just like He is able to bring plants out of the earth.

Everyone will be rewarded or punished according to what they did in this world.

The Arabic alphabet has 29 letters, 14 of them appear as individual letters or in groups at the beginning of 29 surahs, like Qaf, Nun, and Alif-Lam-Mim. According to Imam Ibn Kathir, in his explanation of 2:1, these 14 letters can be arranged into an Arabic sentence that reads 'نص حكيم له سر قاطع' which translates to: 'A wise text with authority, full of wonders.' Although Muslim scholars have tried to explain these 14 letters, no one knows their actual meaning except Allah.

IDOL-WORSHIPPERS DENY LIFE AFTER DEATH

1Qaf. By the Quran, full of glory! 2'Everyone will be brought back to life,' yet those idol-worshippers 'are shocked that a warner has come to them from among themselves 'telling them about life after death'. So the disbelievers say, 'This is hard to believe!' 3Will we be returned to life 'after we are dead and turned into dust? This is impossible. 4We even know exactly how much of their bodies the earth will eat 'after they die, because We have everything in a protected Book. 5In fact, they deny the truth when it has come to them, so they are totally confused.

Those who deny Allah's power are asked to think about this earth and the universe. There are many wonders that Allah has created in nature. The awesome sky is filled with billions of galaxies, planets, and stars. They are different in size and nature. You can fit planet Mercury 18 times inside the earth. You can fit 1,300,000 earths inside the sun. And you can fit 3.69 billion suns inside a giant star known as UY Scuti. Each planet travels perfectly in an orbit. The chance of two planets crashing together is like two boats—one in the Indian Ocean and the other in Lake Ontario—bumping into each other.

There are millions of species that live on our planet. Think about the beauty of a butterfly, the colours of a peacock, the size of a blue whale, the smell of a rose, and the smile of a child. Think of the seasons. Think of the oceans, the mountains, and the forests. Everything is created to serve us so we can serve our Creator. The sun gives us light. Rain gives us life. Bees give us honey. Plants give us fruits and vegetables. Cows give us milk. Chickens give us eggs. Think of the air we breathe and the water we drink. Think of the lovely corn, the delicious apples, and the seedless bananas. In this surah, the deniers are asked, 'Do you think the One Who created all this will not be able to bring you back to life?'

Illustration

Someone may ask, 'If Allah is One, how come He refers to Himself as 'We' throughout the Quran, including verses 6-11 of this surah?' This is called 'the royal we' or 'majestic plural.' When an important person speaks, he or she may say, 'We the Queen' or 'We the President' as a show of greatness and importance. Speakers of Arabic, French, and German would ask a person, 'How are you?' in the plural as a sign of respect. Almighty Allah deserves all respect and honour. When He speaks about His ability to create, send down rain, or any other important matter, He uses the royal we. Every time Allah says 'We,' He always mentions 'Allah,' 'I,' or 'He' either before or after just to remind us that He is One (see 50:14 and 50:26-29).

Illustration

Also, someone may ask, 'Why do we refer to Allah as 'He' if Allah is not male or female?' The reason is that in the Arabic language we use 'he' if someone is male or if we don't know their gender (known as neutral, which is similar to 'it' in English). We wouldn't call Allah 'it' in English, because 'it' usually refers to objects. 'He' is the default, neutral pronoun in Arabic. For example, if your aunt gives birth in another country and you don't know if the baby is a boy or a girl, you may ask (in Arabic), 'Is he a boy or a girl? What did you name him?' We do the same thing in English to avoid using 'it' while referring to Allah out of respect for Him.

If someone asks you, 'Who made this phone?' you might answer, 'Maybe someone in Vietnam.' The next question might be: 'Who created that person in Vietnam?' and you might answer, 'Allah.' Then they might ask, 'Who created Allah?' The problem with this question is that it assumes that Allah is just like us. According to Surah Al-Ikhlas (112), the Creator cannot be like His creation—we are created; He is not.

If we were to argue that Allah was created by another god, then the next question would be 'Who created that god?' And who created the god that created that god? This can go on and on forever. We came from our parents, their parents came from their parents, all the way to Adam, who was created by Allah. If we think of this as a chain of fallen dominoes—the last one fell

Illustration

because of the one before it, and that one fell because of the one before it, and so on. It is logical to assume that someone (who is not a domino) pushed the very first domino, causing all the next ones to fall. In the same way, all creation was caused by Allah, Who Himself is not part of His creation. Think of it this way: if you make a Lego tower, you don't become the tower. Also, if you make 20 cones of vanilla ice cream

it doesn't mean that you become vanilla ice cream. The Prophet said that when this question comes to your mind, you should seek the protection of Allah against the tricks of Shaytan. {Recorded by Imam Muslim}

ALLAH'S POWER TO CREATE

6Have they not then looked at the sky above them 'to see' how We built it and decorated it 'with stars', leaving it with no mistakes? 7As for the earth, We spread it out and put on it firm mountains, and produced in it every type of beautiful Plant. 8all of this is an eye-opener and a reminder to every servant who turns 'to Allah'. 9And We send down blessed rain from the sky, bringing out with it gardens and grains for harvest, 10and tall palm trees stacked with dates, 11this is 'all to support Our creation. And with this rain 'We give life to a dead land. This is exactly how everyone will come out 'of their graves'.

PAST DENIERS

12Before them, the people of Nuh denied the truth, 'as did the people of the Water-hole', Thamud, 'Ad, Pharaoh, the people of Lut, 'the people of the Forest', and the people of Tubba'. Each rejected their 'messenger, so they deserved the punishment I warned them of. 13Ad, Pharaoh, the people of Lut, 'the people of the Forest', and the people of Tubba'. Each rejected their 'messenger, so they deserved the punishment I warned them of. 14the people of the Forest', and the people of Tubba'. Each rejected their 'messenger, so they deserved the punishment I warned them of.

Verse 12: A'rass means a water hole. Allah sent Prophet Shu'aib to these idol worshipping people along with the people of Midian.

Verse 13: The people of Shu'aib.

Verse 14: Tubba' Al Himiari was a believing Yemeni king whose people were very wicked, so they were destroyed, although they were much stronger than the people of Makkah.

ALLAH'S POWER

15Were We unable to create them' the first time? In fact, they cannot understand how they will be re-created. 16Surely 'it is' We Who 'created humankind and fully' know what their souls whisper to them, and We are closer to them than their neck vein. 17As the two recording-angels—one' sitting to the right, and the other to' the left—take note 'of everything'. 18whatever a person says is written down by a watching angel,

Verse 18: If it is something good then the angel on the right will write it down. And if it is something evil then the angel on the left will write it down.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

Death is a fact of life. Many people are afraid to die because they don't know what to expect after death. Others have done so much evil in this world that they don't want to pay the price in the Next Life. Others think that they can't die because the world will fall apart, their

Illustration

The workplace will collapse, their family will be shattered, and maybe the stars will fall from the sky. Life doesn't stop after the death of anyone. Great prophets and leaders passed away, and life went on. If we die, the world will be just fine, our families will get over it, our boss will wish we had left much sooner, and the stars will continue to shine in the sky. The only thing we should worry about is where we will end up after death. We should always be ready for the Next Life, keeping in mind that we are not here to stay. Think of our life as a bus ride—when someone's stop comes, they get off the bus. It doesn't matter if they are ready or not, old or young. Sooner or later, we will leave this world and answer for our actions and choices in this life.

BAD NEWS FOR THE DENIERS

19At the end, with the pain of death will come to the truth. This is what you were trying to escape! 20And the Trumpet will be blown. This is the Day you were warned of. 21Each soul will come along with an angel as an escort and another as a witness. 22It will be said to the denier, 'You totally ignored this 'Day'. Now We have removed your cover, so today your sight is very sharp!' 23And one's recording-angel will say, 'Here is the book of deeds ready with me.' 24It will be said to both angels, 'Throw into Jahannam every stubborn disbeliever.' 25stopper of any good, troublemaker, lost in doubts-- 26Who set up another god with Allah. So throw them into the horrible punishment.

Verse 20: This is the second blow which will cause everyone to come back to life for judgment.

SIDE STORY

SIDE STORY

Some may ask, 'Allah already knows who is going to Jannah and who is going to Jahannam. He could have sent everyone directly either to Jannah or Jahannam. Why do we have to come to this world to be tested?' To answer this question, we need to think about the following story.

Illustration

On the first day of the new school year, two twin brothers, Zayan and Sarhan, moved to a new school. According to their report cards, Zayan is very bright and hardworking. He goes to school every day and does his homework. As for Sarhan, he is always playing. He ignores all rules and never does his homework. By looking at the report cards, the principal decides that Zayan will pass and Sarhan will fail at the end of the year. So, on the first day of school, she gives Zayan an A+ and Sarhan gets an F. Now, Sarhan protests. He tells the principal that she shouldn't judge him based on his report card. He says that if she gives him the chance, he will prove that he too deserves an A+. The only way for the principal to prove him wrong is to let him study and take the test at the end of the year. In the same way, if the disbelievers are thrown into Jahannam as soon as they are created, they will argue, 'Let me take the test of life and I'll show you that I too deserve to go to Jannah.' This is why Allah gives everyone equal opportunity in this life.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

Someone may ask, "If Adam didn't eat from that tree, wouldn't we be in Jannah, we wouldn't be here in this world. Why did he do this?". By reading the story of Adam in **2:30-39**, we realize that:

1. The decision to send Adam (peace be upon him) to earth was made before he was even created. There is also a hadith in which Musa (peace be upon him) said to Adam, "You were honored by Allah, then you caused people to come down to the earth because of what you did!" Adam (peace be upon him) replied, "How can you blame me for something that Allah had written for me long before even taking existence?" (Imam Muslim)

2. He was already warned in advance against the tricks of Shaytan.

3. Adam (peace be upon him) was instructed, "You have a huge number of trees you may eat from; just avoid this one." He was told to stay away from that tree, not because it was poisonous, but because Allah wanted to test his obedience. In the same way, our obedience is tested through the things we are ordered to do or avoid. While some of us pass the test, others fail.

The Next two passages talk about those who fail and those who pass the test of life.

EVIL HUMANS AND THEIR DEVILS

27One's devil will say, 'Our Lord! I did not make them go too far in evil. But they had lost the way 'on their own.' 28Allah will respond, 'Do not argue with each other in front of Me, since I had already given you a warning.' 29My Word cannot be changed, and I am not unfair to My 'creation'. 30Watch out for 'the Day We will ask Jahannam, 'Are you full yet?' And it will say, 'Are there any more?'

Verse 29: Meaning that Allah's promise to punish evil humans and jinn (see 11:119 and 32:13).

SIDE STORY

Abdullah is a good man. He takes care of his family, pays his taxes, and goes to work every day. One day, he twists his ankle while playing soccer, but he still has to go to work because he can't take a day off. Some evil people give him a hard time, but he tries to be kind to everyone. He starts his day by going to the masjid for Fajr prayer even when it's freezing outside. He fasts in Ramadan even in the long, hot summer days. He is always worried about the future of his kids and the health of his wife. He has nightmares of losing his job and failing to pay his bills. He has stopped watching the news because it's the same sad news every day; the only difference is the number of people who have died. He is disturbed by the suffering of innocent people throughout the world. Abdullah always dreams of a better world.

Illustration

Like many people, Abdullah wants the best for himself and his family. His first cellphone was as big as a shoe. Then he switched to a smaller phone. He now has a new smartphone, but wishes for a better one. His first car was manual, made in 1970. His new car is automatic, but he wishes for a more advanced car. He used to live in a small apartment, then he moved to a townhouse. He dreams of buying a big house for his growing family.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

Jannah is the perfect place for Abdullah to live. Once in Jannah, there is no more suffering, sickness, or injustice. Abdullah doesn't have to wake up for Fajr in Jannah or fast in Ramadan anymore because there is none. The weather is nice all the time (76:13). And more importantly, everything is free, so he doesn't have to worry about bills or taxes. If he wishes to go somewhere, he will find himself there immediately. If he desires some food, he will find it right in front of him. In this world, people always switch to better things because they are never satisfied. But Allah says in the Quran (18:108) that those who go to Jannah will never wish to move somewhere else, because there is nothing better than Jannah. There is no death or even sleep there. Everyone will be enjoying themselves forever. The Prophet said that everyone will be as beautiful as Yusuf, as youthful as 'Isa, as tall as Prophet Adam, and as fluent in Arabic as Muhammad. {Recorded by Imam At-Tabarani} Everyone will see their parents, grandparents, and their parents—everyone will be 33 years old forever. {Recorded by Imam Ahmad} Is there anything better than this? Yes, seeing great companions like Abu Bakr, Omar, Othman, and Ali. Anything better? Yes, seeing prophets like Ibrahim, Nuh, Musa, and Isa. Anything better? Yes, seeing Muhammad. Anything better? Yes, seeing Allah Himself (75:22-23). {Recorded by Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim}

GOOD NEWS FOR THE FAITHFUL

31And Jannah will be brought close to the faithful, not far off. 32And it will be said to them, 'This is what you were promised, for whoever always 'turned 'to Allah' and kept up their duties to Him'. 33who honoured the Most Kind without seeing Him' and have come with a heart turning to Him alone, 34Enter it in peace. This is the Day of infinite life! 35There they will have whatever they wish for, and with Us is even more.

Verse 32: This can also mean that they keep Allah in mind as much in private as they do in public.

WARNING TO MAKKAN IDOL-WORSHIPPERS

36Imagine' how many people We destroyed before them, who were more powerful than them. Then 'when the punishment came,' they 'desperately searched for shelter in the land. But was there any escape? 37Surely in this is a reminder for whoever has an open heart and an ear that really listens.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

Some non-Muslims asked the Prophet if it was true that Allah rested on Saturday after He finished the creation of the heavens and earth in 6 Days. So the following verses were revealed to answer this question. (Recorded by Imam At-Hakim}

Illustration

As we will see in Surah 112, Allah is not like us—He doesn't get tired, and He doesn't need rest or sleep. He is Al-Qawi (the Most Strong). If He wants to create something, He just says 'Be!' and it comes into existence.

DID ALLAH EVER GET TIRED?

38Surely We created the heavens and the earth and everything in between in six Days. 39So be patient 'O Prophet' with what they say. And praise the glory of your Lord before sunrise and before sunset. 40And praise Him during part of the night and after prayers.

Verse 38: This does not mean 6 days of our time, but 6 heavenly days or periods of time.

ADVICE TO THE PROPHET

41and listen! On the Day the announcing-angel will call 'for judgment' from a place close to everyone. 42the Day all will hear the 'mighty' Blast in all 'truth', that will be the Day everyone will come out of their graves. 43It is certainly We Who give life and cause death. And to Us is the final return. 44Watch out for the Day the earth will split open, letting them rush out. That will be an easy gathering for Us. 45We know best what they say. And you 'O Prophet' are not there to force them to believe'. You can only' remind with the Quran those who fear My warning.
