LEARNING POINTS
Allah has the power to bring everyone back to life for judgment. He is even able to restore everyone's fingertips with their unique set of fingerprints.
Those who do not believe in life after death will face a horrible punishment.
The Prophet is advised to take his time to memorize the Quran.
BACKGROUND STORY
An idol-worshipper named Adi ibn Rabiah came to the Prophet and asked him, 'How will Allah bring us back to life?' The Prophet told him that Allah will put the bones back together and cause the souls to go back to their bodies. Adi made fun of the Prophet's answer, saying, 'What! This doesn't make any sense. Even if I see it with my own eyes, I would never believe it. Allah simply can't bring rotten bones back to life.' So this surah came down to correct this idol-worshipper. WARNING TO THE DENIERS
1I swear by Judgment Day! 2And I swear by the self-blaming soul! 3Do people think We cannot put their bones back together? 4Of course, We have the power to restore even' their fingertips. 5Still people want to deny what is yet to come, . 6asking 'mockingly', "When is this Judgment Day? 7But when the eyes are stunned, 8and the moon loses its light, 9and the sun is made to join the moon,' 10On that Day, one will cry, "Where is the Escape?" 11But no! There will be no shelter. 12On that Day all will end up before your Lord Alone. 13All will then realize what they did and what they should have done. 14In fact, people will be witnesses against themselves,' 15no matter how many excuses they come up with.
لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ 1وَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلنَّفۡسِ ٱللَّوَّامَةِ 2أَيَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ أَلَّن نَّجۡمَعَ عِظَامَهُۥ 3بَلَىٰ قَٰدِرِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُۥ 4بَلۡ يُرِيدُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ لِيَفۡجُرَ أَمَامَهُۥ 5يَسَۡٔلُ أَيَّانَ يَوۡمُ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ 6فَإِذَا بَرِقَ ٱلۡبَصَرُ 7وَخَسَفَ ٱلۡقَمَرُ 8وَجُمِعَ ٱلشَّمۡسُ وَٱلۡقَمَرُ 9يَقُولُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ يَوۡمَئِذٍ أَيۡنَ ٱلۡمَفَرُّ 10كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ 11إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوۡمَئِذٍ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقَرُّ 12يُنَبَّؤُاْ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ يَوۡمَئِذِۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ 13بَلِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِۦ بَصِيرَةٞ 14وَلَوۡ أَلۡقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُۥ15
BACKGROUND STORY
When the first surahs of the Quran were revealed, the Prophet would rush to recite along with Jibreel because he wanted to memorize the revelations quickly. The following passage tells the Prophet to take his time because Allah Himself has guaranteed his memorization and understanding of the Quran. (Recorded by Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim)
THE PROPHET'S RUSH TO MEMORIZE THE QURAN
16Do not rush your tongue trying to memorize revelation of the Quran. 17It is definitely Our duty to 'have you' memorize and recite it. 18So once We have recited a revelation 'through Jibreel', follow its recitation 'carefully'. 19Then it is surely Our duty to make it clear 'to you'.
لَا تُحَرِّكۡ بِهِۦ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعۡجَلَ بِهِۦٓ 16إِنَّ عَلَيۡنَا جَمۡعَهُۥ وَقُرۡءَانَهُۥ 17فَإِذَا قَرَأۡنَٰهُ فَٱتَّبِعۡ قُرۡءَانَهُۥ 18ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيۡنَا بَيَانَهُۥ19
ANOTHER WARNING TO THE DENIERS
20But no! In fact, you love this short life, 21and ignore the Next Life. 22On that Day 'some' faces will be bright, 23looking at their Lord. 24And 'other' faces will be depressed, 25expecting something horrible to crush them.
كَلَّا بَلۡ تُحِبُّونَ ٱلۡعَاجِلَةَ 20وَتَذَرُونَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ 21وُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ نَّاضِرَةٌ 22إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٞ 23وَوُجُوهٞ يَوۡمَئِذِۢ بَاسِرَةٞ 24تَظُنُّ أَن يُفۡعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٞ25
DEATH OF A DENIER
26But no! Watch out for the day' when the soul reaches the collar bone 'as it Leaves, 27and it will be said, "Is there anyone who can save this life? 28And the dying person realizes it is 'their' time to Go, 29and one pain leads to another 30On that day they will be driven to your Lord Alone. 31This denier did not believe or pray, 32but kept denying and turned Away, 33then went to their own people, walking arrogantly. 34You are doomed, really doomed! 35Again, you are doomed, even more!
كَلَّآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلتَّرَاقِيَ 26وَقِيلَ مَنۡۜ رَاقٖ 27وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ ٱلۡفِرَاقُ 28وَٱلۡتَفَّتِ ٱلسَّاقُ بِٱلسَّاقِ 29إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوۡمَئِذٍ ٱلۡمَسَاقُ 30فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّىٰ 31وَلَٰكِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ 32ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ يَتَمَطَّىٰٓ 33أَوۡلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوۡلَىٰ 34ثُمَّ أَوۡلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوۡلَىٰٓ35
WORDS OF WISDOM
Some people think that the only purpose of their existence is to eat and drink and have kids. If this is true, then what makes them different from the cat in their house or the bugs in their backyard? According to the end of this surah and the beginning of the next, Allah created us for a higher purpose—that is to worship Him alone and to do good.
ALLAH'S POWER
36Do people think they will be left without purpose? 37Were they not 'once' a human seed that came forth? 38Then they became a tiny thing hanging 'in the womb', then He developed and perfected their form, 39producing from it both genders, male and female. 40Is such 'a Creator' unable to bring the dead back to life?
أَيَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ أَن يُتۡرَكَ سُدًى 36أَلَمۡ يَكُ نُطۡفَةٗ مِّن مَّنِيّٖ يُمۡنَىٰ 37ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةٗ فَخَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ 38فَجَعَلَ مِنۡهُ ٱلزَّوۡجَيۡنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰٓ 39أَلَيۡسَ ذَٰلِكَ بِقَٰدِرٍ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يُحۡـِۧيَ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ40
