LEARNING POINTS

LEARNING POINTS

This surah is a warning to those who mock the Prophet (PBUH) and make fun of Judgment Day.

The surah also talks about the qualities and reward of the believers, especially those who keep up their prayers.

It also talks about the horrors waiting for the deniers and how they will be trying hard to save themselves from the Fire.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

An-Nadr ibn Al-Harith, an evil Makkan idol-worshipper, used to make fun of Judgment Day and encourage other idol-worshippers to abuse the Prophet and his followers. He challenged Allah (as mentioned in 8:32), If this is the truth from You, then shower us with stones from the sky or put us through a painful punishment.An-Nadr later lost his life in the Battle of Badr. {Recorded byImam Ibn Kathir)

Judgment Day will seem like 50,000 years for the disbelievers, but it will be very short for the believers. The Prophet S said that this long period will be as short for a believer as the time they spent in a single salah in the world. (Recorded by Imam nAhmad).Time passes very fast or very slow, depending on whether you are having a good or a bad time. For example, an hour in de- tention passes like a month, whereas an hour of playing games passes like 1 minute. This concept is called 'time perception'.

MOCKING JUDGMENT DAY

1A challenger has demanded a punishment that is sure to come 2for the disbelievers—to be stopped by none 3from Allah, Lord of the heavenly pathways 4'through which' the angels and the 'holy' spirit will go up to Him on a Day fifty thousand years long. 5So exercise beautiful patience 'O Prophet'. 6They truly see this 'Day' as impossible, 7but We see it as sure to come.

According to verses 8-18, evil friends will not help each other on Judgment Day. But the be- lievers will ask Allah to make it easy for their good friends, who might have done bad things.

We share in the reward or punishment by being around good or bad friends.Let's say you are sitting in a Quran class with some friends and someone comes in to give prizes to that class. You will be getting a prize even if you don't know how to read properly. In the same way, if you are sitting with thieves somewhere and the police officers come in, you will be arrested even if your only job is to make tea. Imam lbn Kathir said in his explanation of Surah Al-Kahf (18:18 and 22) that Allah honoured a dog by mentioning him 4 times for being in good company, and Allah shamed some human beings in Surah Al-Qaşaş (28:8) for being in the bad company of Pharaoh.

A scholar by the name of ibn Al-Qayim said that there are 4 types of friends:

1. Good friends who guide us to do good and keep us away from evil. We cannot live without them because they are like the air we breathe and the water we drink.:

2. Classmates and workmates, we just study and work with them. They are like medi-cine, which we use only if there is a need.

3.Those we hang out with just to pass the time, not doing anything good or bad.The more we stay away from them, the healthier our life will be:

4. Those who encourage us to do evil and stop us from doing good. They are like poi son; we should avoid them completely.

HORRORS OF JUDGMENT DAY

8On that Day the sky will be like burnt oil 9and the mountains like 'piles of wool'. 10And no close friend will ask 'about' their friends, 11'although' they will be made to see each other. The wicked will wish to buy their way out of the punishment of that Day even by giving up their own children, 12their spouses, their siblings, 13their extended family that sheltered them, 14and everyone on earth altogether, just to save themselves. 15But no! There will definitely be a burning Fire, 16ripping skin off the body. 17It will call in whoever turned their backs 'on Allah and walked away 'from the truth'. 18Those who only' gathered and stored wealth

Yasin works for a big company. His office is in Toronto, and the main office is in New York. If the main office wants him to do something, they send him an email. If it's more important, they give him a call. But if it's very important, they ask him to fly from Toronto to New York. In the same way, Allah would send the angel Jibreel to the Prophet with the order to fast, pay zakah, and do hajj. But for salah, Allah asked Jibreel to bring the Prophet all the way to the 7h heaven to receive the order from Allah directly. (Recorded by Imam Muslim}:

Salah is a very important act of worship in Islam. To understand the value of salah, think about the following:

1.Those who are poor don't have to pay zakah, pregnant women don't have to fast in Ra- madan, and those who are very sick don't have to go for hajj. But, a Muslim has to pray even if they are poor, pregnant, or sick.:

2.The Prophet said that the first thing that we will be questioned about on Judgmen# Day is salah. {Recorded by Imam At-Tirmizi}:

3.The last advice the Prophet gave us before he passed away was about salah. He said Salah! Keep up your salah! {Recorded by Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim}

4.The Prophet said that the closest a person can get to Allah is when they bow down in salah. (Recorded by Imam Muslim)

5.They say, if you want to talk to Allah, you need to call: 24434. Do you know what this number stands for?

SIDE STORY

SIDE STORY

An old man told his son that he was planning to invite the Imam and the people who go to the masjid to his house for dinner after Maghrib (sunset prayer). In that salah, the Imam recited Surah Al-Ala (87) in the first rak'ah and Surah Ad-puha (93) in the second. The fa- ther said he would leave immediately after salah to make sure the food was ready. He expected his son to bring everyone, however, his son had a different plan. So, instead of making an announcement, his son waited by the door and asked them one by one, Which two surahs did the Imam recite in salah? Some said, Al-Bagarah (2) and Yusuf (12) Others said, A-Kahf (18) and Yasin (36). Some others said, A-Kawthar (108) and A-Falag (113). Only 4 people got the right answer, and only those 4 deserved to go to dinner

In verses 19-35 of this surah, Allah says good things about those who try to focus in salah, pay attention, and do things properly. This is why salah has an impact on their life and attitude, making them patient, honest, and kind. Those who just pray like robots or parrots, their hearts are not connected and their manners are not improved. The Prophet said that we will get the reward based on how much we try to focus in salah. (Recorded by Imam Ahmad}

The Prophet said that it is important for children to be trained on how to do salah between the age of 7 and 10. {Recorded by Imam Ahmad & Imam Abu Dawood} This will help them get used to it and master all the movements and sayings at a young age. As the saying goes, Led ing at a young age is like writing on stone, and learning at an old age is like writing on water..

EXCELLENCE OF THE FAITHFUL

19Surely humankind was created impatient: 20panicking when something bad happens, 21and not sharing when blessed with good— 22except those who pray, 23always doing their prayers; 24and who give a certain share of their wealth 25to those who beg for food' and those who are poor; 26and who fully' believe in Judgment Day; 27and those who fear the punishment of their Lord— 28knowing that' none should feel safe from their Lord's punishment 29and those who fulfil their desires 30Only with their wives or those they have legally, for then they are free from blame, 31but those who go beyond that are really crossing the line. 32The faithful are' also those who are true to their trusts and promises; 33and who are honest in what they witness; 34and who keep up their prayers. 35These will be in Gardens, treated with honour.

WARNING TO THE MOCKERS

36So what is the matter with the disbelievers that they rush towards you 'O Prophet', 37from the right and the left, in groups to make fun of you? 38Does every one of them expect to be entered into a Garden of Enjoyment? 39But no! Surely they 'already' know what We created them from. 40So, I swear by the Lord of 'all' the points of sunrise and sunset that We truly have the power 41to replace them with 'others' better than them, and We cannot be stopped. 42So let them be busy, enjoying 'their nonsense' until they face their Day, which they have been threatened with 43the Day they will rush out of their graves, as if racing to an idol 'for a blessing' 44with eyes looking down, totally covered with shame. That is the Day they have 'always' been warned of.
