LEARNING POINTS

LEARNING POINTS

Allah shows great support to His Prophet (PBUH) and praises his excellent character.

If you take care of people, Allah will take care of you.

It's important to say 'in-sha-Allah' (God willing) because nothing can happen without Allah's permission.

The idol-worshippers are warned of punishments in this life and the next for being ungrateful to Allah, worshipping idols, and for abusing the Prophet (PBUH).

Those who don't pray in this life will have a hard time on Judgment Day.

One should always be patient and never lose hope.

ADVICE TO THE PROPHET

8So do not give in to the deniers. 9They wish you would take it easy 'with their idol-worship' so they would take it easy 'with your faith'. 10And do not obey the one who is always making false oaths, Disgusting, 11backbiting, spreading rumours, 12stopping any good, causing trouble, sinning, 13abusing, and—on top of all that—born outside of marriage. 14Now, 'simply' because he has been blessed with 'a lot of' wealth and children, 15whenever Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "Fairy tales!" 16We will soon mark his nose!

Verse 16: The nose was a sign of pride in the ancient Arab culture. WhenMuslims pray, they make sure their noses touch the ground for humility.

When he died, his children decided that their father was wrong for wasting their fruit by Shat ing it with the needy. They decided to pick the produce and keep it all for themnselves, but they forgot to say in-sha-Allah. So, Allah punished them for their selfishness and ingratitude by destroying their garden. THE TEST OF THE GARDEN OWNERS

17Surely We have tested those 'Makkans' as We tested the owners of the garden—when they swore they would certainly pick 'all' its fruit in the early morning, 18without saying in-sha-Allah. 19Then it was struck by a disaster from your Lord while they slept, 20so it was turned into ashes. 21Then in the morning they called out to each other, 22'saying, "Go early to your harvest, if you want to pick all" the fruit." 23So they went off, whispering to each other, 24"Do not let any poor person enter your garden today." 25And they moved on early, totally fixed on their intention. 26But when they saw it 'destroyed', they cried, "We must be in the wrong place! 27In fact, we have been left with nothing 'to eat'." 28The most reasonable of them said, "Did I not tell you to say in-sha-Allah?" 29They replied, "Glory be to our Lord! We have truly done wrong." 30Then they turned on each other, throwing blame. 31They said, "Shame on us! We have definitely gone too far in evil. 32We trust our Lord will give us a better garden than this. We are surely turning to our Lord with hope." 33That is the 'way of Our' punishment 'in this world'. But the punishment of the Next Life is definitely far worse, if only they knew.

Verse 33: Allah gave them a better garden after they repented.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

The idol-worshippers rejected the idea of life after death. They claimed that even if there is a Day of Judgment, they will be going to Jannah just like the believers. So the following passage was revealed to teach them that they are not in a position to decide how they will be treated in the Next Life. They have no proof to support this claim. They should know that they are going to the Fire if they continue to reject Allah. {Recorded by Imam Al-Qurtubi}

QUESTIONS TO IDOL-WORSHIPPERS

34Only the faithful will have the Gardens of Enjoyment with their Lord. 35Now, do you 'idol-worshippers' expect Us to treat the wicked like those who submit to Allah'? 36What is wrong with you? How can you be so unfair? 37Or do you have some Holy Book that teaches you 38that you will get to pick and choose? 39Or did you take promises from Us—which are valid until Judgment Day—that you will get whatever you desire? 40Ask them 'O Prophet' which of them can guarantee all that. 41Or do they have other gods 'supporting this claim'? Then let them bring their fake' gods, if what they say is true.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

Allah gives people control over their actions in this life so they can decide what they want to do. However, the Quran says in verses 1:4 and 82:19 that Allah will have ful authority on Judg- ment Day. According to verses 42-43 of this surah, the wicked will try to pray to save them- selves from Hell, but they will not be able to kneel down because they will have no control over their bodies. They will not even be able to stop their organs from testifying against them on that Day (41:20). {Recorded by Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim}.

WARNING OF JUDGEMENT DAY

42Watch out for the Day when horror is unleashed, and the wicked will be asked to bow down in prayer, but they will not be able to, 43With eyes looking down, totally covered with shame. This is because they were 'always' called to pray 'in the world' when they were fully able 'but they chose not to'. 44So leave to Me O Prophet' those who reject this message. We will trap them little by little in ways they cannot imagine. 45I 'only' delay their end for a while, but My planning is perfect. 46Or are you 'O Prophet' charging them a fee 'for delivering the messages' they have to borrow tons of money? 47Or do they have access to 'the heavenly Book in' the unseen, so they copy it 'for all to see'?

Verse 47: This heavenly Book, known as Al-Lowh Al-Mahfouz (the Pre- served Tablet), is kept with Allah. It has all the details of ev- erything that happened in the past and everything that willhappen in the future.

BACKGROUND STORY

Prophet Yunus invited his people to Islam for many years, but they rejected his message. When he be-came very frustrated, he warned them of the com- ing punishment. Then he A rushed to leave the city without Allah's permission. When his people realized their mistake before the coming of the punishment, they cried to Allah for forgiveness, and He accepted their repentance. Yunus ended up in the belly of the whale for his impatience. He was so stressed in- side the whale that he kept praying. Allah accepted his prayers, and the whale left him on an open shore. And Allah caused a pumpkin tree tO grow to give him shelter from the sun and from insects. The story of Yunus a is mentioned here briefly to teach the Prophet to be patient.

WORDS OF WISDOM

After Yunus left his city without Allah's permission, he prayed for forgiveness. After Adam a ate from the forbidden tree, he prayed for forgiveness. After Musa killed a man by mis- take, he prayed for forgiveness. So, Allah forgave all of them. But when Satan disobeyed Allah by refusing to bow down before Adam , he argued with Allah, and never prayed for forgive- ness. This is why he was never forgiven.

When some people do something wrong, they either pretend they didn't do it, or lie about it, or blame it on someone else, or argue about it. When we make a mistake, we should apologize and learn from our mistake.

One day, l gave a talk about people who harm themselves. and 1 used smoking as an example. One brother, who was a heavy smoker, came to argue with me after the talk, saying that smok ing has many benetits. Although he argued for about 15-20 minutes, he didn't mention a single benefit. I told him, Thanks brother. I will tell you how smoking will benefit you:

1.If you smoke a lot, you will never suffer from old age ill- nesses. Why? Because you will die young.

2.Burglars will not break into your house at night. Why? Be- cause you will be up all night coughing.

3.Dogs will not attack you. Why? Because you will age so fast that you will have to use a cane. When dogs see the cane, they will leave you alone.

We both laughed, then he left for a smoke!'

According to verses 48-50 below, even if you make a mistake, Allah is always willing to give you a second chance to be your best. After Prophet Yunus prayed to Allah for forgiveness, He blessed him and made himn one of the best prophets. So it doesn't matter how you start in life, what matters to Allah is how you finish.

Growing up as a young African-American in the 1930s. Malcolm X had a rough childhood. After his father was killed and his mother was sent to the mental hospital, Malcolm and his siblings found themselves in foster homes. He dropped out of school and fell into street life with gangs. In 1946, he ended up in jail where he found out about Islam, and later became a Muslim (even though at the time he didn't have the right in- formation about the faith). In jail he had nothing but time, so he started to think about improving his life and realized that education was the only way to do it. He taught himself how to read and write, memorized the entire dictionary page by page, and read all the book

the books and encyclopaedias in the prison library. Eventually, Malcolm became one of the most powerful African-American Muslim leaders. His 1964 speech The Ballot or the Bullet' is ranked as one of the top 10 best speeches in American history. Although Malcolm died at the age of 39, he empowered many African-Americans, like the famous boxer Muhammad Ali. His life story, The Auto- biography of Malcolm X, touched millions of lives, including mine. In his Letter from Mecca' (1964), Malcolm wrote that during haj he was very impressed by his experiences with Muslims of different races and colours. He said that Islam is the only religion that can solve the problem of race in America. May Allah shower His mercy on Malcolm X (El-Haj Malik El-Shabazz).

A LESSON TO THE PROPHET

48So be patient with your Lord's decision, and do not be like 'Yunus,' the Man of the Whale, who cried out 'to Allah, totally stressed. 49If he had not been shown mercy by his Lord, he would have definitely been left on the open shore, still in the wrong. 50Then his Lord chose him, making him one of the best. 51The disbelievers would almost tear you up with their 'evil' stares when they hear 'you recite' the Reminder, and say, "He must be Crazy" 52But it is simply a reminder to the whole world.
