LEARNING POINTS
This surah teaches the believers the proper way of divorce as well as the rights and responsibilities after divorce.
Those who obey Allah's orders are promised a great reward, and those who challenge Him are warned of a horrible punishment.
Allah makes things easy in difficult times.
PROPER DIVORCE
1O Prophet! teach the believers: 'When you "intend to" divorce women, then divorce them, keeping their waiting period in mind, and count it accurately.' And fear Allah, your Lord.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِيُّ إِذَا طَلَّقۡتُمُ ٱلنِّسَآءَ فَطَلِّقُوهُنَّ لِعِدَّتِهِنَّ وَأَحۡصُواْ ٱلۡعِدَّةَۖ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمۡۖ لَا تُخۡرِجُوهُنَّ مِنۢ بُيُوتِهِنَّ وَلَا يَخۡرُجۡنَ إِلَّآ أَن يَأۡتِينَ بِفَٰحِشَةٖ مُّبَيِّنَةٖۚ وَتِلۡكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِۚ وَمَن يَتَعَدَّ حُدُودَ ٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ ظَلَمَ نَفۡسَهُۥۚ لَا تَدۡرِي لَعَلَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحۡدِثُ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ أَمۡرٗا1
Verse 1: A waiting period is the time that a woman has to observe af-ter divorce or the death of her husband before she can marry again.
DIVORCED WOMEN DURING THE WAITING PERIOD
1Do not force them out of their homes, and they should not leave--unless they do something shameful. These are the rules set by Allah. And whoever breaks Allah's rules has truly done wrong against him- self. You never know, maybe Allah will bring about a change 'of heart' later:.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِيُّ إِذَا طَلَّقۡتُمُ ٱلنِّسَآءَ فَطَلِّقُوهُنَّ لِعِدَّتِهِنَّ وَأَحۡصُواْ ٱلۡعِدَّةَۖ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمۡۖ لَا تُخۡرِجُوهُنَّ مِنۢ بُيُوتِهِنَّ وَلَا يَخۡرُجۡنَ إِلَّآ أَن يَأۡتِينَ بِفَٰحِشَةٖ مُّبَيِّنَةٖۚ وَتِلۡكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِۚ وَمَن يَتَعَدَّ حُدُودَ ٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ ظَلَمَ نَفۡسَهُۥۚ لَا تَدۡرِي لَعَلَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحۡدِثُ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ أَمۡرٗا1
WORDS OF WISDOM
According to verses 2-3, if we put our trust in Allah, He will make things easy for us. If Allah wants something to happen, it must happen even if it's beyond our imagination. How can little birds destroy the mighty army of Abraha with all his men and elephants? How can 'Isa A be born without a father? How can Adam be created without a fa- ther or a mother? And how can the Ark of Nuh survive the flood even though it was made by people who never built a boat before, and the Titanic sank even thougnt was built by professionals? Also, if Allah doesn't want something to happen, it will never happei even if we don't understand how. For example, Prophet lbrahim was not burnt when he W thrown into the fire. The Children of Israel didn't drown when Prophet Musa split the sea tor them. And the knife didn't cut in the story of Isma'il and the sacrifice.According to the following passage, Allah is in control and He is able to do anything. He can easily take care of the husband and wife after divorce, and help each start a new life.
DIVORCED WOMEN AFTER THE WAITING PERIOD
2Then when they have almost reached the end of their waiting period, either keep them with dignity or separate from them with dignity. And call two of your reliable men to witness 'either way'—and let both be true witnesses for the sake of Allah. This is a guideline to whoever has faith in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever keeps Allah in mind, He will make a way out for them, 3and provide for them in ways they could never imagine. And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He alone is enough for them. Surely Allah always achieves His Will. Allah has already set a perfect plan for everything.
فَإِذَا بَلَغۡنَ أَجَلَهُنَّ فَأَمۡسِكُوهُنَّ بِمَعۡرُوفٍ أَوۡ فَارِقُوهُنَّ بِمَعۡرُوفٖ وَأَشۡهِدُواْ ذَوَيۡ عَدۡلٖ مِّنكُمۡ وَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلشَّهَٰدَةَ لِلَّهِۚ ذَٰلِكُمۡ يُوعَظُ بِهِۦ مَن كَانَ يُؤۡمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأٓخِرِۚ وَمَن يَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ يَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ مَخۡرَجٗا 2وَيَرۡزُقۡهُ مِنۡ حَيۡثُ لَا يَحۡتَسِبُۚ وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسۡبُهُۥٓۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَٰلِغُ أَمۡرِهِۦۚ قَدۡ جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لِكُلِّ شَيۡءٖ قَدۡرٗا3
WAITING PERIODS FOR DIVORCED WOMEN
4As for your women who are too old to have a monthly cycle, in case you do not know, their waiting period is three months, and those who have not had monthly cycles as well. As for those who are pregnant, their waiting period ends with child-birth. And whoever keeps Allah in mind, He will make things easy for them. 5This is the ruling of Allah, which He has revealed to you. And whoever keeps Allah in mind, He will clear them of their sins and reward them greatly.
وَٱلَّٰٓـِٔي يَئِسۡنَ مِنَ ٱلۡمَحِيضِ مِن نِّسَآئِكُمۡ إِنِ ٱرۡتَبۡتُمۡ فَعِدَّتُهُنَّ ثَلَٰثَةُ أَشۡهُرٖ وَٱلَّٰٓـِٔي لَمۡ يَحِضۡنَۚ وَأُوْلَٰتُ ٱلۡأَحۡمَالِ أَجَلُهُنَّ أَن يَضَعۡنَ حَمۡلَهُنَّۚ وَمَن يَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ يَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ مِنۡ أَمۡرِهِۦ يُسۡرٗا 4ذَٰلِكَ أَمۡرُ ٱللَّهِ أَنزَلَهُۥٓ إِلَيۡكُمۡۚ وَمَن يَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ يُكَفِّرۡ عَنۡهُ سَئَِّاتِهِۦ وَيُعۡظِمۡ لَهُۥٓ أَجۡرًا5
HOUSING FOR DIVORCED WOMEN
6Let them live where you live during their waiting period, according to your ability. And do not harass them to make their stay difficult for them. If they are pregnant, then pay for their needs until they give birth. And if they breastfeed your child, pay them a fee, and discuss together in a civil way. But if you fail to reach an agreement, then another woman will breastfeed 'the child' for the father. 7Let the man of wealth provide according to his ability. As for the one with limited resources, let him provide according to whatever Allah has given him. Allah does not require of any soul more than what He has given it. After hardship, Allah will bring about ease.
أَسۡكِنُوهُنَّ مِنۡ حَيۡثُ سَكَنتُم مِّن وُجۡدِكُمۡ وَلَا تُضَآرُّوهُنَّ لِتُضَيِّقُواْ عَلَيۡهِنَّۚ وَإِن كُنَّ أُوْلَٰتِ حَمۡلٖ فَأَنفِقُواْ عَلَيۡهِنَّ حَتَّىٰ يَضَعۡنَ حَمۡلَهُنَّۚ فَإِنۡ أَرۡضَعۡنَ لَكُمۡ فََٔاتُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ وَأۡتَمِرُواْ بَيۡنَكُم بِمَعۡرُوفٖۖ وَإِن تَعَاسَرۡتُمۡ فَسَتُرۡضِعُ لَهُۥٓ أُخۡرَىٰ 6لِيُنفِقۡ ذُو سَعَةٖ مِّن سَعَتِهِۦۖ وَمَن قُدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ رِزۡقُهُۥ فَلۡيُنفِقۡ مِمَّآ ءَاتَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُۚ لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفۡسًا إِلَّا مَآ ءَاتَىٰهَاۚ سَيَجۡعَلُ ٱللَّهُ بَعۡدَ عُسۡرٖ يُسۡرٗا7
AN INVITATION TO TRUE FAITH
8Imagine' how many societies challenged the orders of their Lord and His messengers, so We made them pay a terrible price and hit them with a horrible Punishment. 9So they tasted the evil consequences of their actions, and the result of their actions was 'total' loss. 10Allah has 'also' prepared for them a severe punishment 'in the Next Life'. So fear Allah, O people of reason and faith. Allah has surely revealed to you a Reminder, 11'and sent' a messenger reciting to you Allah's revelations, making things clear so that He may bring those who believe and do good out of darkness and into light. And whoever believes in Allah and does good will be entered by Him into Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there for ever and ever. Allah has certainly prepared for them excellent resources.
وَكَأَيِّن مِّن قَرۡيَةٍ عَتَتۡ عَنۡ أَمۡرِ رَبِّهَا وَرُسُلِهِۦ فَحَاسَبۡنَٰهَا حِسَابٗا شَدِيدٗا وَعَذَّبۡنَٰهَا عَذَابٗا نُّكۡرٗا 8فَذَاقَتۡ وَبَالَ أَمۡرِهَا وَكَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ أَمۡرِهَا خُسۡرًا 9أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٗا شَدِيدٗاۖ فَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ يَٰٓأُوْلِي ٱلۡأَلۡبَٰبِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْۚ قَدۡ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَيۡكُمۡ ذِكۡرٗا 10رَّسُولٗا يَتۡلُواْ عَلَيۡكُمۡ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ مُبَيِّنَٰتٖ لِّيُخۡرِجَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ مِنَ ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِۚ وَمَن يُؤۡمِنۢ بِٱللَّهِ وَيَعۡمَلۡ صَٰلِحٗا يُدۡخِلۡهُ جَنَّٰتٖ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدٗاۖ قَدۡ أَحۡسَنَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُۥ رِزۡقًا11
ALLAH'S POWER AND KNOWLEDGE
12Allah is the One Who created seven heavens in layers', and the same for the earth. The command comes down to all of them so you may know that Allah has power over all things, and that Allah definitely has perfect knowledge of everything.
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ سَبۡعَ سَمَٰوَٰتٖ وَمِنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِثۡلَهُنَّۖ يَتَنَزَّلُ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ بَيۡنَهُنَّ لِتَعۡلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ قَدِيرٞ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَدۡ أَحَاطَ بِكُلِّ شَيۡءٍ عِلۡمَۢا12
