LEARNING POINTS
This surah teaches Muslims to thank Allah for His special favours. For example:
They should appreciate the Prophet by showing him due respect.
They should appreciate Jum'ah prayers by paying attention to the speech.
And they should appreciate the Quran by living up to its teachings.
ALLAH'S FAVOUR TO THE BELIEVERS
1Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth 'always' praises Allah the King, the Most Holy, the Almighty, the Wise. 2He is the One Who raised for the people who could not read or write a messenger from among themselves—reciting to them His revelations, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom, for surely they had lost their way in the past. 3along with others of them who have not yet joined them 'in faith'. This is because He is the Almighty and Wise. 4This is the favour of Allah. He gives it to whoever He wants. And Allah is the Lord of great blessings.
يُسَبِّحُ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ٱلۡمَلِكِ ٱلۡقُدُّوسِ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡحَكِيمِ 1هُوَ ٱلَّذِي بَعَثَ فِي ٱلۡأُمِّيِّۧنَ رَسُولٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ يَتۡلُواْ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ وَيُزَكِّيهِمۡ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَإِن كَانُواْ مِن قَبۡلُ لَفِي ضَلَٰلٖ مُّبِينٖ 2وَءَاخَرِينَ مِنۡهُمۡ لَمَّا يَلۡحَقُواْ بِهِمۡۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ 3ذَٰلِكَ فَضۡلُ ٱللَّهِ يُؤۡتِيهِ مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو ٱلۡفَضۡلِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ4
WASTED KNOWLEDGE
5The example of those who were trusted with 'practicing' the Torah' but failed to do so, is that of a donkey carrying books. How evil is the example of those who reject Allah's revelations! And Allah does not guide the people who do wrong.
مَثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ حُمِّلُواْ ٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةَ ثُمَّ لَمۡ يَحۡمِلُوهَا كَمَثَلِ ٱلۡحِمَارِ يَحۡمِلُ أَسۡفَارَۢاۚ بِئۡسَ مَثَلُ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُواْ بَِٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهۡدِي ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ5
Verse 5: The Torah is the Holy Book that was revealed to Musa .
THOSE WHO DISOBEYED MUSA
5Remember, O Prophet,' when Musa said to his people, O my people! Why do you always' hurt me when you already know that I am Allah's messenger to you? So when they kept turning away truth', Allah caused their hearts to turn dway as well. This is because Allah does not guide the troublemakers.
مَثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ حُمِّلُواْ ٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةَ ثُمَّ لَمۡ يَحۡمِلُوهَا كَمَثَلِ ٱلۡحِمَارِ يَحۡمِلُ أَسۡفَارَۢاۚ بِئۡسَ مَثَلُ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُواْ بَِٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهۡدِي ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ5
Verse 5: The Torah is the Holy Book revealed to Musa à.
A WAKE-UP CALL
6Say, 'O Prophet,' "O you who claim to follow the Jewish faith! If you say you are Allah's chosen 'people' out of all humanity, then wish for death, if what you say is True." 7But they will never wish for that because of what their hands have done. And Allah has 'perfect' knowledge of those who do wrong. 8Say, "The death you are running away from will eventually come to you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the seen and unseen, and He will make you realize what you did."
قُلۡ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ هَادُوٓاْ إِن زَعَمۡتُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ أَوۡلِيَآءُ لِلَّهِ مِن دُونِ ٱلنَّاسِ فَتَمَنَّوُاْ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ 6وَلَا يَتَمَنَّوۡنَهُۥٓ أَبَدَۢا بِمَا قَدَّمَتۡ أَيۡدِيهِمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمُۢ بِٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ 7قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ ٱلَّذِي تَفِرُّونَ مِنۡهُ فَإِنَّهُۥ مُلَٰقِيكُمۡۖ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَٰلِمِ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ وَٱلشَّهَٰدَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ8
Verse 8: 3 The verse talks about those who killed Prophet Zakariya s and his son Yahya , and those who tried to kill 'isa , and those who broke the Sabbath, and those judges who took bribes.
BACKGROUND STORY
At first, when the Prophet started the Friday service in Madinah, he began with the prayer followed by the speech. On one occasion, a caravan of food arrived in the city duringa time of hard- ship while the Prophet i% was giving the talk after the prayer. Normally, caravans were received with drum beats. Most of the people in the masjid thought it was okay to leave because they had already prayed. So they rushed to welcome the caravan and watch the drum show, leaving the Prophet in the middle of his talk. Later, the Prophet s decided to start the Friday service with the speech so everyone would stay for the prayer. (Recorded by Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim)
FRIDAY PRAYER
9O believers! When the call to prayer is made on Friday, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave 'your' business. That is best for you, if only you knew. 10Once the prayer is over, spread throughout the land and seek the blessings of Allah. And remember Allah often so you may be successful.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَوٰةِ مِن يَوۡمِ ٱلۡجُمُعَةِ فَٱسۡعَوۡاْ إِلَىٰ ذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِ وَذَرُواْ ٱلۡبَيۡعَۚ ذَٰلِكُمۡ خَيۡرٞ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ 9فَإِذَا قُضِيَتِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةُ فَٱنتَشِرُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱبۡتَغُواْ مِن فَضۡلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱذۡكُرُواْ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرٗا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ10
LEAVING DURING THE SPEECH
11When they saw the 'drum' show along with the caravan, they 'almost all' rushed to it, leaving you 'O Prophet' standing 'in the middle of your talk'. Say, "What is with Allah is far better than entertainment and business. And Allah is the Best Provider."
وَإِذَا رَأَوۡاْ تِجَٰرَةً أَوۡ لَهۡوًا ٱنفَضُّوٓاْ إِلَيۡهَا وَتَرَكُوكَ قَآئِمٗاۚ قُلۡ مَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَيۡرٞ مِّنَ ٱللَّهۡوِ وَمِنَ ٱلتِّجَٰرَةِۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَيۡرُ ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَ11
