LEARNING POINTS

The Prophet expelled the tribe of Bani An-Nadir from Madinah for breaking their peace agreement with the Muslims.

The hypocrites are criticized for secretly supporting Bani An-Nadir.

The people of Madinah (known as Al-Ansar 'the Helpers') are praised for welcoming their brothers and sisters (known as Al-Muhajiroon 'the Emigrants') who moved from Makkah after years of abuse.

Allah instructs the believers on how to divide war gains and to prepare for the Next Life.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

The tribe of Bani An-Nadir, which lived in Madinah, broke peace agreements with the Prophet by mak-CONT RACT ing secret plans with the Makkan idol-worshippers against the Muslim commu- nity. They even planned to kill the Prophet , but their plan failed. So the Prophet decided to banish them from Madinah. He allowed them to take whatever they could carry on their camels. Some even destroyed their Own homes so no one could live there after them. {Re- corded by Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim)

BANI AN-NADIR EXPELLED

1Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth praises Allah. This is because He is the Almighty and Wise. 2He is the One Who drove out the disbelievers of the People of the Book from their homes for the first time ever. You never thought they would go. And they thought their big forts would put them out of Allah’s reach. But the order of Allah came upon them from where they never expected. And He put horror into their hearts so they destroyed their homes with their own hands and the hands of the believers. So take a lesson from this, O people gifted with understanding. 3If Allah had not written for them to be removed, He would have definitely punished them in this world. And in the Next Life they will suffer the punishment of the Fire. 4This is because they challenged Allah and His Messenger. And whoever challenges Allah, then Allah is truly severe in punishment.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

The following passage was revealed to discuss 2 issues

Although Muslims were not allowed to cut down trees during war, they had to clear some palm trees to be able to access the gated area where Bani An-Nadir lived. So the tribe complained about it.

Some Muslims had questions about how the war gains (such as money, land, homes, and so on) should be divided. According to the following verses, since it was an easy battle, the Prophet had the right to divide the gains according to what was best for the community. So he gave most of the gains to the poor Makkan emigrants so they didn't have to burden the people of Madinah. (Recorded by Imam Ibn Kathir)

RULING ON PALM TREES AND WAR GAINS

5Whatever palm trees you 'believers' cut down or left standing uncut, it was 'all' by Allah’s Will, so that He might shame the troublemakers. 6As for those 'easy' gains that Allah has moved over to His Messenger—you 'believers' did not 'even' have to rush any 'of your' horses or camels for such gains. But Allah gives authority to His messengers over whoever He wills. This is because Allah has power over all things.

Future gains

7As for gains given by Allah to His Messenger from the people of 'other' lands, they are for Allah and the Messenger, his close relatives, orphans, the poor, and 'needy' travellers so that wealth may not only stay among your rich. Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it. And whatever he forbids you from, leave it. And fear Allah—surely Allah is severe in punishment. 8'Some of the gains will be' for poor emigrants who were driven out of their homes and properties, only seeking Allah’s blessings and good pleasure, and standing up for Allah and His Messenger. They are the ones who are true in faith.

Verse 8: houses and farm

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

One of the people of Madinah, named Thabit ibn Qais , invited a Makkan emigrant Muslim for dinner because he was very hungry. Since the family of Thabit didn't have enough food for every. one, he told his wife to put the lights out when dinner was served so the guest would eat up all the food, thinking that everybody was eating with him. In the morning, the Prophet s told Thabit that Allah really liked what he and his wife had done with their guest. {Recorded by Imam Al-Qurtubi}

EXCELLENCE OF THE PEOPLE OF MADINAH

9As for those who had settled in the city and 'accepted' the faith 'of Islam' before 'the arrival of' the emigrants, they welcome those who move to their city, never having ill desire in their hearts for the gains that are given to the emigrants. They prefer them over themselves even though they may be in need. And whoever is saved from selfishness, it is they who are 'truly' successful.

LATER BELIEVERS

10And those who come after them will pray, “Our Lord! Forgive us and our fellow believers who were ahead of us in faith, and do not allow bad feelings into our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord! Surely You are always Kind, Most Merciful.”

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

Bani An-Nadir were told that they had 10 days to leave. When they started to pack, some hyp ocrites came to them and said, You don't have to leave. Just stand your ground and fight, ana we will support you with thousands of fighters So Bani An-Nadir decided to stay. However, the hypocrites didn't showW up to support them when the Muslim army came, so eventually the tribe had no choice but to pack up and leave Madinah. (Recorded by Imam ibn Kathir)

THE HYPOCRITES AND BANI AN-NADIR

11Have you 'O Prophet' not seen the hypocrites who say to their fellow disbelievers from the People of the Book, “If you are kicked out, we will definitely leave with you, and we will never obey anyone against you. And if you are fought, we will surely help you”? But Allah is a witness that they are truly liars. 12Of course, if they are kicked out, the hypocrites will never leave with them. And if they are fought, the hypocrites will never 'show up to' help them. Even if they do, they would definitely run away, leaving them with no help after all.

THE cowards

13Surely there is more fear in their hearts for you 'believers' than for Allah. That is because they are a people who do not really understand. 14Even if they were all together, they would not 'dare' fight against you except 'from' within lands with big forts or from behind walls. Their hatred for each other is intense: you think they are united, but their hearts are divided. That is because they are a people with no sense. 15They are 'both just' like those who went down before them the other day: they tasted the evil consequences of their actions. And they will suffer a painful punishment.

THE trick

16They are just 'like Satan when he says to someone, “Just disbelieve!” Then after they disbelieve, he will say 'on Judgment Day', “I have absolutely nothing to do with you. I truly fear Allah—the Lord of the whole universe.” 17So they will both end up in the Fire, staying there forever. That is the punishment of those who do wrong.

Allah makes it easy for us to go to Jannah. For every good deed, He gives us from 10 to 700 rewards or more-depending on how sincere we are. Every sin is counted only as one. If someone thinks about doing something good but couldn't do it, he or she will get a reward. If someone thinks about doing something evil but doesn't do it, he or she will get a reward as well. For someone to receive their full reward, they need to do good deeds only for the sake of Allah, following the example of the Prophet as.

According to verses 18-20 of this surah, every now and then we need to sit and think about the deeds that we will be taking with us to the Next Life..

If we are doing something wrong, we should ask ourselves:.

1.Why did we do that?.

2.What should we do to correct this wrong?.

3.And how can we avoid doing it again? This attitude will help us repent to Allah. One shouldn't wait till tomorrow, because tomorrow may never come.

If we are doing something good, we should ask ourselves:.

1)Are we doing our best?

2)Could we do better next time?

3)And are we doing it to please Allah or to show off? Our intention is what decides if a good deed is accepted or not.

There was a scholar who used to judge his own actions. He dug a fake grave in his house to remind himself of the Next Life. Every now and then, he would lie down in that grave and his assistant would close the grave with a heavy slab. Then he would stay there for about one hour to question his intentions and deeds. At the end, he would say, O Allah! Give me a second chance. I'll do better next time. After he finished, he would knock a couple of times and his children would open for him. One day, he got inside the grave as usual, and his wife and children went shopping. After one hour, he knocked but no one opened for him. He started to panic, and kept knocking and crying for hours until he actually thought he was dead. Finally, his wife and children came and opened for him. He told himself, I was lucky today, but one day I'll actually die and go to the grave, and no one will open for me.

WORDS OF WISDOM Shaytan will not leave us alone. He will always try to play tricks to get us to trouble. For example, if we do something good, he will try to stop us or at least mess with our intentions. If we do something wrong, he will say, It's okay because everybody else is doing it,or You are still young, and you can repent later,or Your sin is very small compared to what others do, or Your sins are too big for Allah to forgive.

This is a true story of a 17-year old boy who lived in Canada. His mother would ask him to pray his 5 daily salah, but he always said, Tomorrow. She would ask him to go to the masjid for Jum'ah (Friday prayers), but he always said, Next week. Eventually, he came to the masjid, not to pray, but for his own janazah (funeral prayer) after he had died in a car accident..

One Friday in Ramadan, the Imam was raising funds for the masjid. He told everybody about the reward for supporting the house of Allah. They passed the donation box around. Everyone was donating, except Zaki, a business owner who didn't want to contribute. Zaki put his hand in his pocket, got his phone out and started to check some posts on Facebook. An old man behind him tapped him on the shoulder and gave him a bun- dle of money-probably $3,000. Still busy with his phone, Zaki took the money and put it in the box. After şalah, Zaki shook the old man's hand and thanked him for being so generous with A- lah's house. The old man smiled and said, No, thank you! I just gave you the money that fell out of your pocket when you took your phone out! Do you think Zaki will get a reward for his donation?.

JUDGE YOURSELF BEFORE JUDGEMENT DAY

18O believers! Keep Allah in mind and let everyone look to what 'deeds' they have stored for tomorrow. And fear Allah—surely Allah is fully Aware of what you do. 19And do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. It is they who are 'truly' the troublemakers. 20The people of the Fire cannot be equal to the people of Jannah. Only the people of Jannah will be successful.

Every true Muslim loves and respects the Quran. But evervone has a different connection withthe Bookof Allah. Some listen to it only when someone dies. Some keep a copy in their car, think ing that it will protect them against accidents. Others give it to each other as a gift. And some have beautiful verses tramed and hung on the wall to make their living room look nice. But this is not the reason why Allah revealed the Quran. According to verse 21 of this surah, the Quran is so powerful that it can make a mighty mountain crumble to pieces. But we cannot feel this pow- er until we have a personal relationship with the Quran. Our duty towards the Quran includes reading it, understan ding it, memorizing it, reflecting on it, living by it, and teaching it to others.

This is a true story of an American white supremacist, who believed that people with white skin are superi- or to people of colour, especially African-Americans. He used to do drugs, and sometimes was very vio- lent. One day, he had an argument with his mom. He pushed her, and she fell and injured her head. The neighbours called the police, so he had to run away. He knew that he would be arrested if he went to his best friend's house, so he decided to hide in a place the police would never think of-the library. To avoid looking weird at the library, he grabbed a random book and started to read. That book happened to be an English translation of the Quran. He read Surah Al-Hujurat (49). Verse 13 was So powerful that it touched his heart and made him question his beliefs about race and the purpose of life. Eventually, he accepted Islam and quit drugs. He became very kind to his mother, and ended up marrying an African-Ameri- can Muslim lady. The Quran changed his life for the better.

Allah has many Beautiful Names. The Prophet said, O Allah! I ask You by every Namethat You have-whether You revealed it in Your book, or taught any of Your servants, or kept it to Yourself ..{Recorded by Imam Ahmad} Some of those Names are mentioned in said that if you understand 99 of Allah's Names. verses 22-24 of this surah. The Prophet will go to Jannah. (Recorded by Imam Al-Bukhari memorize them, and live by them, you & Imam Muslim}.

If you keep in mind that Allah is the Most Merciful, you will never lose hope in His mercy. If you understand that He is the Most Forgiving, you will never lose hope in His forgiveness. If you realize that He is the Creator and Provider, you will worship and thank Him. If we know that He sees and hears everything, we will be careful of what we say and do.

One of the Beautiful Names of Allah is Al-Mutakabbir (the Majestic). It means that Allah is above human needs and shortcomings. For example, He doesn't need sleep because He never gets tired. He doesn't have children or parents, because He is not in need of some- one to carry His Name or to take care of Him. And He is never unjust to His creation, even those who deny Him..

Another Beautiful Name is Al-Jabbar (the One in Control). Everyone makes plans. But everything goes according to Allah's plan. Al-Jabbar also means: the One Who comforts the weak and the abused.Jabirah is the Arabic word for 'a cast' which supports a broken bone. Allah always takes care of us. And He rewards those who take care of others and put a smile on their faces for His sake.

The man said he didn't beca use he couldn't afford it. Bassem started to talk to Some communi- ty members to raise $8,500 to send that brother for hajj. With- in a month, they raised much more money than what was required. Some people didn't even know the old brother, but wanted to help anyway. The old brother couldn't believe it when he was given the money. It was a dream come true. After he came back from hajj, Bassem went to welcome him. When the old brother saw Bassem, he said that words couldn't explain how happy he was in Makkah and Madinah. Before Bassem left, the brother hugged him and said, When I was in Makkah, I wanted to buy you a suitable gift for what you have done! But I couldn't find anything that was good enough. The only thing I could do was to stand in front of the Ka'bah and make du'a for you. I said, '0 Allah! This brother made me happy. Please make him happy in this world and in Jannah. As I mentioned in Surah 57, I used to walk one hour to school and one hour back home every day. We didn't have lunch bags back then, so my dad would give me some money to buy a meal Like many students, I usually went to Mr. Zakariya's food stand next to school to buy koshari (a popular Egyp- tian dish with a mix of rice, pasta, chick peas, fried onions, tomato sauce, and so many other things). One day when I was 9 years old, I got my plate and struggled to push my way out of the crowd. But l ended up tripping and dropped my koshari on the floor. I realized that I was going to starve the rest of the day at school and then have to walk one hour back home. I said to myself, l'm doomed for sure! Seeing the food all over the ground, mixed with dust, really broke my heart. Suddenly, someone tapped me on the shoul- der. When I turned around I saw Mr. Zakariya with a yummy plate of koshari in his hand. With a big smile, he said, This is for you! On that day, I understood the value of helping someone in need and putting a smile on their face.
