LEARNING POINTS
Allah has perfect knowledge because He hears and sees everything.
The believers should do things properly. This includes divorce, social manners when people get together, talking to someone in private, and dealing with the Prophet.
We should ask good questions if we really want to learn.
People should not trust an enemy who tries to hurt their community.

BACKGROUND STORY
A woman named Khawlah had a disagreement with her husband, Aws, who, in anger, told her she was like his mother. Before Islam, this was considered a form of divorce in Arabia. Khawlah sought the Prophet's opinion, who initially stated he had no teaching from Allah on the matter and, based on old Arab practices, she was divorced. She argued that their children would suffer from this separation. When the Prophet reiterated his answer, she prayed to Allah for a solution. Subsequently, these verses were revealed, ending this old divorce practice. (Recorded by Imam Ahmad)

Aishah, the Prophet's wife, said, 'I was in the house when Khawlah spoke to him; I couldn't hear what she said, but Allah heard everything from above the 7 heavens.' (Recorded by Imam Al-Bukhari)
THE CASE OF KHAWLAH
1 .Allah has definitely heard the words of the woman who argued with you ' Prophet' about her husband, and begged Allah. Allah has heard your discussion back and forth. Certainly Allah hears and sees 'everything.,
THE RULING
2 Those ofyou who 'sinfully' divorce their wives by comparing them to their moth- ers 'should know that' their wives are in no way their mothers. None can be their mothers except those who gave birth to them. What they say is definitely horrible and untrue. Yet Allah is willing to excuse and forgive., 3Those who divorce their wives in this way, then 'wish to' go back on what they said, must free a slave be- fore they touch each other. This 'penalty' Ls á, 3heis Ls3 is meant to stop you from doing this'. And Allah is fully Aware of what you do. 4But if the husband cannot afford this, let him then fast two straight months before the couple touch each other. But if he is unable to fast', then let him feed sixty poor people. This is to prove your faith in Allah and His Messenger. These are the rules set by Allah. And the unfaithful will suffer a painful punishment..
THOSE WHO BREAK THE RULES
5 Surely those who challenge Allah and His Messenger will be brought down, just like those before them. We have defi- nitely sent down clear revelations. And the disbelievers will suffer a humiliat-ing punishment. ! 6 On the Day Allah will bi Ls ál s bring them back to life all together, He will remind them of what they did. Allah has recorded it all, even though they have forgotten it. And Allah is a Witness over all things.,
Verse 5: Those who challenged their prophets in the past
ALLAH KNOWS EVERYTHING
7. Do you not see that Allah knows what-ever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth? If three talk privately, He is the fourth. If they are five, He is the sixth. Whether they are fewer or more, He is with them wherever they may be. Then, on Judgment Day, He will remind them of what they did. Surely Allah has perfect' knowledge of all things.!

BACKGROUND STORY
Verses 8-10 of this surah deal with an evil practice of some hypocrites in Madinah. They used to wink and whisper to each other every time a Muslim passed by. They would also start making up stories just to scare Muslims. This bullying made Muslims uncomfortable, so they complained to the Prophet , and soon verses 8-10 of this surah were revealed. (Recorded by Imam lbn Kathir)}

WORDS OF WISDOM
Words matter. Allah creates with a word. People marry with a word. New Muslims enter Islam with a word. A word can make someone's day or break their heart, We shouldn't brag about our health in front of someone who is sick. Or brag about our money in front of someone who is poor. Or brag about our parents in front of an orphan. This is why it's important to think before we speak. If we do, we will not be saying 85% of the things we have in mind, simply because they will hurt someone's feelings or waste someone's time..

SIDE STORY
Omar ibn Abdil-Aziz, a great Muslim ruler, fell sick one day. People started coming to his hoIsa to comfort him. One visitor asked Omar, What's wrong? He answered, Al-hamdu-lillah! I have some pain here and here. The man said, Sub-hana-Allah! Hopeless case! My father died he. cause of it. My uncle died because of it. There is no cure; you are dying for sure. With a broken heart, Omar told the man, I thought you came to put a smile on my face! From now on, when vou visit the sick, don't talk about the dead, and when you leave my house, don't you ever come back

WORDS OF WISDOM
In Islam, it's forbidden to harm people with one's tongue, includ- ing pranking them in a dangerous way. Telling someone that their mother just died or their house is on fire is not funny, even if you call it an April Fool's Day' joke. The Prophet was travelling with some of his companions and they decided to have some rest. As they slept, one of them took something from his friend and hid it somewhere. When his friend woke up, he was terrified because he couldn't find it. Finally, the one who hid it gave it back, and told the Prophet that he was just pranking his friend. The Prophet told him that he shouldn't scare people even when he is joking with them. (Recorded by Imam Al-Bukhari)}

SIDE STORY
I had a friend who was living next door at the dorm when I was in university back in 1999. One day, he came late when none of his roommates were there. When he went to bed, he felt something round under his pillow, which turned out to be a skull. He was so Scared that he wanted to jump out of the windowN on the qth floor. The loud laughs of some medical students next door revealed the evil masterminds.
EVIL, SECRET TALKS
8Have you not seen those who were forbidden from secret talks, yet they always' return to what they were forbidden from, only talking about evil, breaking the rules, and disobeying the Messenger? And when they come to you 0 Prophet', they do not greet you as Allah greets you,' and say to each other mockingly', How come Allah does not punish us for what we say?Jahannam is enough for them-they will burn in it. What an evil destination!!
Verse 8: They would say to the Prophet , Asamu 'alaikum' (death be upon you), instead of 'Asalamu alaikum' (peace be upon you).
TIPS FOR PRIVATE TALKS
90 believers! When you speak privately. s B) Í L do not let it be about evil, breaking the rules, and disobeying the Messenger, but let it be about goodness and faithfulness. And fear Allah, to Whom you will 'all' be gathered 'for judgment' 10Secret talks are only inspired by Satan to make the believers feel sad. Yet he cannot harm them at all except by Allah's Will. So in Allah let the believers put their trust.?

WORDS OF WISDOM
According to verse 11 of this surah, those who are gifted with knowl- edge will be honoured on Judgment Day. Someone may ask, There is so much knowledge in Islam? What should I learn? Generally, there are 3 types of knowledge:!
1. Haram knowledge, which no Muslim should practice, such as learning black magic or hacking.

2. Good knowledge, which is permissible, such as learning medi- cine and web design..
3. Fard knowledge, which all Muslims should have. This includes learning about Allah (and how to worship Him), the Prophet E (and how to follow his example), and Islam (and how to tell halal from haram). Every Muslim should have this knowledge, regardless of their level of education. This knowledge has something to do with the 3 questions that everyone will get in the grave:
1) Who is your Lord?.
2) Who is your prophet?
3) What is your faith?

SIDE STORY
Ibn Abbas (the Prophet's cousin) was a very smart young man. The Prophet prayed to Allah to bless him with knowledge and wisdom. (Recorded by Imam Ahmad) After the Prophet's death, tbn Abbas sald to a man, Let's go and learn from the companions of the Prophet o we can teach others in the future. The man refused and said, Who are you? Do you think people will be in need of your knowledge? D Abbas didn't listen to him, and started to go around to collect knowi edge. He said that he would wait in front of someone's house for hours-even on sunny and dusty days-in order to learn from them. Eventually, Ibn Abbas gained so much knowledge that many people gathered to learn from him, The man who had refused to study with him later admitted, Tbn Abbas was right, and I was wrong. {Recorded by Imam At-Tabarani}:

This is a true story that happened in the USA in the late 1960s. An African-American 6 grader wrote a paper in which he said that he wanted to be on TV. The problem was that he had a stutter, so he couldn't speak smoothly. When his racist teacher read his paper, she called him in front of the entire class, just to humiliate him. She said, Kid! Has your dad ever been on TV? He replied with a stutter, N-n-no! She then said, How about your mom-has she ever been on TV? Again, he replied, N-n-no! She yelled, How dare you put something like this in the paper? He struggled to answer, but she interrupted, Then shut up and sit down. You are so pathetic, you can't even talk! Although his teacher was very mean to him, he always believed in himself. He eventually became one of the most famous American TV hosts of all time, hosting popular shows like Little Big Shots and Family Feud. His name is Steve Harvey. He says that every year he makes sure to mail a brand new LCD Screen to his teacher so she can watch him on TV.:

1. Never give up.:
2. Seek knowledge even if it's difficult.
3. You have to believe in yourself. If you don't, no one will.:
4. Don't let anybody make you feel like you are nobody.

WORDS OF WISDOM
Whether parents like it or not, kids learn from the media. Some moviesand videogames are good, but many are a bad influence. In many games, the more people you shoot, the more points you get. How many games give you points for helping a blind person cross the road, feeding the homeless, or cleaning up your room? Many movies feature heroes who destroy everything in their way without ever getting arrested. Many of us grew up with cartoons of a bulldog, a cat, and a mouse hitting and shooting each other the whole time. We saw a princess fall in love with a thief who had a flying carpet. We saw another princess witha very long hair fall in love with a cute thief. VWe saw a superhero in an all-black Costume who drove over 200 miles per hour and never got a ticket, a sailor man with tattoos who smoked pipe, a wooden boy with a long nose who always lied, a girl who stayed in a house with 7 little men that she didn't know and another girl who came home from a party after midnight with only one shoe. We saw a movie featuring several ancient Greek gods, and another with fairies who brought about spring and caused trees to bear fruit-which goes against our belief in the One True God Who takes care of everything Parents should filter out as much bad content as they can, and talk to their kids about both the pos- itive and negative messages that are in the media they consume.

You can learn from a book, but it's better to study with a teacher. This is why Allah didn't just send us the Quran, but He raised a prophet to explain its message to us. However, we have to choose the people we learn from carefully. Not everyone who has hun- dreds of lectures on YouTube or thousands of followers on social media is a reliable source of information. Moreover, many teachers have knowledge, but only a few are blessed with wisdom. Wisdom basically means to say or do the right thing at the right time in the right way..

SIDE STORY
This is a true story that happened in sna village in a Muslim country. Most of the people in this village were not educated-only a few were hafiz (those who mem- orized the entire Quran). One of them started to lead şalah at the masjid, but he didn't have knowledge. Be- fore Eid-ul-Adha, some people started asking him ques- tions on how to do qurbani (the sacrifice) properly. In- stead of saying, 1 don't know, he bought a book of figh (religious rulings) and started to teach. In one class, he read this ruling: It's recommended to make wudu' for qurbani. To explain it, he said, You must make wudu'for the sheep-washing its mouth, nose, face, head, legs, and little ears. OT course, he misunderstood the ruling. What it actually means is that the person himself should have wudu', not the animal.

RULES FOR GATHERINGS
110 believers! When you are told to make room in gatherings, then do so. Allah will make room for you 'in His mercy'. And if you are told to rise, then do so. Allah will raise the rank of those of you who are faithful and those gifted with knowledge. And Allah is fully Aware of what you do.

BACKGROUND STORY
Some people used to ask the Prophet unnecessary and sometimes ridiculous questions. For example:
1Who is my real father?:
2What do I have in my pocket?:
3Where is my lost camel?
Some would ask for new rulings that would probably make things difficult for some Muslims or even for themselves. So verse 12 was revealed, asking the believers to give charity before they could ask a question. The goal was to cut down such practices. Eventually, this ruling was taken back to make it easy for the poor to ask questions without having to worry about giving charity. (Recorded by Imam lbn Kathir)}

WORDS OF WISDOM
Asking questions is a good way to learn and grow. No question is a bad question, as long as we ask to increase our knowledge. One day, I invited a historian to a Canadian school to speak about the challenges faced by early Muslim immigrants. He prepareda nice presentation and drove for almost one hour to get to the school. In the presentation, he mentioned the story of a man who couldn't find a job in Toronto in the early 1900's because of racism. So, this man started off by selling candy, and eventually became a successful businessman. The historian expected the students to ask about dealing with racism, or starting one's own business or how that man became successful in Canada. However, the first question was: What kind of candy did that man sell? And the historian got very disappointed. Imams too have to deal with these types of questions. For example:.

1Is water halal?:
2Do the jinn give birth or lay eggs?:
3What colour is the black stone?
CHARITY BEFORE ASKING THE PROPHET
120 believers! When you ask the Messen- ger privately, donate something in ad- vance. That is better and purer for you. But if you cannot afford it, then Allah is truly Forgiving and Merciful. 13. Are you afraid of making a donation before your private talks 'with him'? Since you are unable to do so, and Allah has turned to you in mercy, then 'continue to' offer dai- ly şalah, pay zakah, and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah is fully Aware of what you do.

BACKGROUND STORY
A hypocrite named Abdullah ibn Nabtal used to report to some of his wicked friends what tne Prophet said or did, so they would all laugh about it in a very disrespectful way. One day the Prophet asked Abdullah why he was making fun of him with his friends. He swore by Allah that it was not true, and he invited his friends, who also swore that thev never did. oy doing this, Abdullah and his friends were lying. (Recorded by Imam Ahmad & Imam Al-Hakimu
SATAN'S GROUP
14 Have you not seen those hypocrites' who partner with a group of people Al- lah is angry with? They are not fully with you or with them. And they swear on lies Intentionally. 15 Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment. It is truly evil what they do. ? 16 They have made their false' oaths as a shield, preventing oth- ers' from the way of Allah. So they will suffer a humiliating punishment. 17 Their wealth and children will not help them against Allah at all. It is they who wil be the people of the Fire. They will be there forever. 18 On the Day Allah will bring them all back to life, they will 'falsely' swear to Him as they swear to you, think- ing this will help them get away with it. Surely it is they who are the total' liars.. 19 Satan has taken full control of them, causing them to forget the remembrance of Allah. They are the group of Satan. Surely Satan's group is going to lose.

BACKGROUND STORY
The believers wished that one day Islam would spread to lands that were under the rule of Rome and Persia, the most powerful empires at that time. The hypocrites used to make fun of them, saying, You have lost your mind! Do you think those superpowers are like those little, weak towns that you beat in your backyard?(Recorded by Imam Al-Qurtubi)
However, in less thana century, the Muslim rule spread even beyond Rome and Persia, cover- ing from China in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west, including all of North Africa and Some parts of Europelike Turkey and Spain.
ALLAH'S GROUP
20As for' those who challenge Allah and His Messenger, they will definitely be among the most disgraced. 21 Allah has already decided: I and My messengers will definitely win.Surely Allah is Pow- erful and Almighty. 22. You will never find any people-who 'truly' believe in Allah and the Last Day--to be loyal to those who challenge Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their own parents, chil- dren, siblings, or extended family. For those believers', Allah has put faith in their hearts and supported them with a spirit from Him. He will enter them into Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there forever. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. They are the group of Allah. Surely Allah's group is going to succeed.,
