Allah is the Most Merciful, Who gives second chances.

BACKGROUND STORY
The Prophet and 1,400 of his companions travelled to Makkah to do ‘umrah in the 6th year after Hijrah to Madinah. He sent 'Uthman ibn 'Affan to let the Makkans know that the Muslims had come in peace, only to visit the Ka'bah. When the Makkans delayed 'Uthman, the Prophet got some news that they might have killed him. So he invited the faithful to give him a pledge under a tree (at a place called Hudaibiyah, just outside Makkah) to defend the truth with their lives. He told those 1,400 companions, “You are the best people on the face of the earth today.” He also told them that none of them will ever enter the Fire. Shortly after, 'Uthman returned safely, and a peace agreement was signed by the Muslims and Makkan idol-worshippers. According to the Hudaibiyah Peace Agreement, the Muslims would have to return to Madinah and come back next year for ‘umrah.

BACKGROUND STORY
Some of the companions (like 'Omar ibn Al-Khattab) were not too happy with the agreement because the people of Makkah were very arrogant with the Prophet. For example, when 'Ali ibn Abi Talib was writing the agreement, Suhail ibn 'Amr told him arrogantly, "Don't write Muhammad the Messenger of Allah, just write Muhammad the son of 'Abdullah." 'Ali didn't want to do that, but the Prophet asked him to do what Suhail had requested. He wanted his companions to see the big picture and not to be distracted by small details. As we will see at the beginning of this surah, Allah calls this peace agreement a great success, because of the amazing results that the Muslims achieved in the long run.

SIDE STORY
'Omar did not like Suhail because of his attitude towards Islam. When Suhail fought against the Muslims and was taken as a prisoner at the Battle of Badr, 'Omar told the Prophet, "Let me break his teeth and cut off his tongue so he doesn't talk against Islam ever again." But the Prophet told him, "I'm not allowed to do that. Leave him alone. Maybe one day he will stand up and say something that will make you very happy." This came true after Suhail accepted Islam a few years later, along with many people in Makkah. When the Prophet passed away, many Makkans wanted to leave Islam. So Suhail stood up and gave a powerful speech. He told them, "Shame on you. You were the last people to accept Islam, and now you want to be the first to leave it. This will never happen! Islam will reach every corner of the world." So the people were moved by his words and stayed as Muslims. 'Omar was very happy with what he said.

BACKGROUND STORY
The arrogant idol-worshippers didn't allow the Muslims to do ‘umrah, even though the Muslims had travelled over 400 km to Makkah (which took them 2 weeks), and now they had to travel another 400 km back to Madinah. Then next year, they had to travel 400 km to Makkah then another 400 km back to Madinah. That's a total of over 1,600 km (and almost 2 months of travelling) just to do ‘umrah that would normally take less than an hour to finish. So when the Prophet told the Muslims that they had to stop their ‘umrah and do it next year, nobody listened. Even though the Prophet was receiving revelations, he asked his wife, Umm Salamah, for advice. She said, "Don't talk to anybody. Just sacrifice your animal and shave your head, and they will follow you." And things worked exactly as she expected.

WORDS OF WISDOM
Seeing something is often more impactful than simply hearing about it. Many people like visuals, so they may be more interested in a video or PowerPoint presentation rather than a regular speech. This is probably what happened with Musa in Surah Ta-ha (20:83-86). Allah told him that his people started to worship the golden calf after he left, but he became very angry when he saw it, even though the words of Allah are more reliable than his own eyes. Maybe this is why Umm Salamah advised the Prophet not to talk to the people and to just to do it himself. As soon as they saw the Prophet doing it, everybody followed his example.

WORDS OF WISDOM
As Allah said, this agreement was a 'great success' because: It made peace between the Muslims and the Makkan idol-worshippers. Instead of fighting, the Muslims had the time to make their new state in Madinah stronger. It also gave the Muslims a lot of time to teach others about Islam. Thousands of people from different tribes became Muslim during that period of peace. Both sides were allowed to become allies with other tribes, so the Muslims gained more support in Arabia. When the Makkans broke this peace agreement 2 years later, the Prophet led an army of 10,000 soldiers to open the city, compared to the 1,400 that had come with him for 'umrah. That is an increase of 8,600 people.

SIDE STORY
During their stay at Hudaibiyah, the Muslims ran out of water. When they reported that to the Prophet, he took an arrow and told them to put it inside the well of Hudaibiyah. When they did, water started to flow, so they had enough water for themselves and their animals for the rest of their stay. Jabir ibn 'Abdillah said, "Even if we were 100,000 people, that water would have been enough for all of us."
THE PEACE AGREEMENT
1Surely We have given you a great success 'O Prophet'. 2so that Allah may forgive your past and future shortcomings, perfect His favour upon you, guide you along the Straight Path, 3and so that Allah will help you greatly. 4He is the One Who sent down peace upon the hearts of the believers so that they may increase even more in their faith. The forces of the heavens and the earth belong to Allah 'alone'. And Allah has perfect knowledge and wisdom. 5So He may enter the believing men and women into Gardens under which rivers flow to stay there forever, and to clear them of their sins. And that is the greatest success in the sight of Allah. 6Also 'so that' He may punish the hypocrite men and women and the idol-worshipping men and women, who have evil thoughts about Allah.' May their' evil turn against them! Allah is angry with them, and He has doomed them, and prepared for them Jahannam. What an evil destination! 7The forces of the heavens and the earth belong to Allah 'alone'. And Allah is Almighty and Wise.
THE PROPHET'S DUTY
8Surely 'O Prophet,' We have sent you as a witness, a giver of good news, and a warner, 9so that you 'believers' may have faith in Allah and His Messenger, support and honour him, and praise Allah morning and evening.

WORDS OF WISDOM
Someone may ask, "If Allah is not like us, why does verse 10 say that He has a Hand?" As we mentioned in Surah 112, we believe that Allah has a Face and Hands because these qualities are mentioned in the Quran and in the sayings of the Prophet. But we do not know what His Face and Hands look like because these things are beyond our imagination. We need to understand that Allah is unique. He has a Face and Hands, but not like ours. In the same way, we have life, knowledge, and power, but they are nothing compared to His Eternal Life, Endless Knowledge, and Great Power.

PLEDGE UNDER THE TREE
10Surely those who give you a pledge 'O Prophet' are actually giving a pledge to Allah. Allah's Hand is over their hands. Whoever breaks their pledge, it will only be their own loss. And whoever keeps their promise to Allah, He will give them a great reward.

BACKGROUND STORY
When the Prophet decided to go to Makkah for ‘umrah, he called upon everyone who was able to travel to join him. However, many hypocrites and roaming Arabs with weak faith ignored that call. They said among themselves that the Prophet and his companions were no match for the Makkans, and would quickly be crushed. Later, the Prophet and his companions returned safely to Madinah. Those who gave him the pledge were promised future gains. Those who didn't join him came to offer false excuses, hoping to receive a share of the gains. So verses 11-15 came down to teach these people a lesson.

FAKE EXCUSES FOR NOT TRAVELLING TO MAKKAH
11The roaming Arabs, who stayed behind, will say to you 'O Prophet', "We got busy with our wealth and families, so ask forgiveness for us." They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts. Say, "Who then can stand between you and Allah if He wants to harm or benefit you? In fact, Allah is fully Aware of what you do. 12The truth is, you thought that the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families again. And your hearts were excited for that. You had evil thoughts 'about Allah, and 'so' you became doomed." 13And whoever does not have faith in Allah and His Messenger, then We have surely prepared for the disbelievers a blazing Fire. 14The kingdom of the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah 'alone'. He forgives whoever He wants, and punishes whoever He wants. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
SHARES IN THE WAR GAINS
15Later, those who stayed behind will say when you 'believers' go out to take the war gains, "Let us come with you." They want to change the promise of Allah. Say, "O Prophet, 'You are not coming with us. This is what Allah has said before.'" They will then say, "No, you are just jealous of us!" The truth is, they can hardly understand.
A SECOND CHANCE
16Say to the roaming Arabs who stayed behind, "One day, you will be called 'for battle' against a mighty people,' who you will fight, unless they submit. If you then obey, Allah will give you an excellent reward. But if you turn away as you did before, He will hit you with a painful punishment."
THOSE NOT REQUIRED TO FIGHT
17There is no blame on the blind, the disabled, or the sick 'for staying behind'. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He will enter them into Gardens under which rivers flow. But whoever turns away, He will put them through a painful punishment.
PLEDGE OF THE FAITHFUL
18Surely Allah was pleased with the believers when they gave you 'O Prophet' a pledge under the tree. He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down peace upon them and rewarded them with a victory soon after, 19to take many war gains. Allah is always Almighty and Wise. 20Allah has promised you 'believers' many more future gains to take, so He sped up this 'peace agreement' for you. And He held people's hands back from 'harming' you so it may be a sign for the believers, and so He may guide you along the Straight Path. 21There are also other gains, not yet within your reach, but Allah is keeping them 'for you'. Allah always has power over all things.
THE BELIEVERS WILL WIN
22If the disbelievers fight you, they will certainly run away. Then they will never find any protector or helper. 23This has always been Allah's Way in the past. And you will find no change in Allah's Way.

BACKGROUND STORY
In the following passage, Allah criticizes the idol-worshippers for being arrogant, stopping the Prophet and his companions from visiting the Ka'bah (which was very shameful even before Islam), and for preventing the animals (that Muslims sacrifice as offerings after ‘umrah) from reaching their destination. Some of them even tried to attack the Muslims on their way to Makkah, but they were quickly chased away and some were captured by the Muslims before they were released by the Prophet. The Muslims were not allowed to fight because there were some people who had accepted Islam secretly in Makkah and the Prophet didn't want them to get hurt by mistake. This passage promises that those Muslims will be safe and many Makkan idol-worshippers will end up accepting Islam, which happened a few years later.
WISDOM BEHIND THE PEACE AGREEMENT
24He is the One Who held back their hands from you and your hands from them in the valley of 'Hudaibiyah, near Makkah, after giving you control over 'a group of them. And Allah sees what you do. 25They are the ones who disbelieved, prevented you from the Holy Mosque, and stopped the animal offerings from reaching their destination. We would have let you march through 'Makkah,' if it was not for some believing men and women that you did not know. So you might have hurt them by accident, then become guilty for 'what you did to' them by mistake. That was so Allah may enter into His mercy whoever He wants. If those 'unknown' believers stood apart, We would have certainly targeted the disbelievers there with a painful punishment.
MAKKAN ARROGANCE
26'Remember when the disbelievers had filled their hearts with pride-the pride of ignorance 'before Islam'-then Allah sent down His peace upon His Messenger and the believers, inspiring them to stick to the word of faith, because they were more fit and deserving of it. And Allah has 'perfect' knowledge of all things.

BACKGROUND STORY
Before the Hudaibiyah peace agreement, the Prophet had a dream that he and his companions were entering the Holy Mosque in peace and shaving their heads (which is done after 'umrah). When he told his companions, they got very excited. However, when the idol-worshippers stopped them from doing 'umrah, the companions were very disappointed. Some hypocrites started to say, "What is this? No heads have been shaved, and no Holy Mosque has been entered!" 'Omar reminded the Prophet of his dream, and the Prophet said, "Did I say it is going to be this year?" 'Omar said, "No!" Then the Prophet told him that they would definitely do it in-sha-Allah.
THE PROPHET'S DREAM
27Allah will certainly make His Messenger's dream come true: in-sha-Allah, you will definitely enter the Holy Mosque, in peace-'some with' heads shaved and 'others with' hair shortened-without fear. He knew what you did not know, so He gave you this great success' first. 48He is the One Who has sent His Messenger with 'true' guidance and the religion of truth, making it rise above all others. And Allah is enough as a Witness.

BACKGROUND STORY
The following verse (48:29) confirms the fact that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, even if the idol-worshippers challenge and question him. Allah will always support him. Allah chose the best people to be his sahabah (companions). They are described in the Tawrah of Musa as being tough with their enemies, but kind to each other. They bow down in salah, hoping to please Allah. Their faces are bright from praying. The example of the Muslim community in the Injil of 'Isa is that of a single seed that turns into a plant (like the Prophet), then branches come out (like Khadijah, Abu Bakr, 'Omar, 'Othman, 'Ali, Bilal, and Salman), then the plant grows day by day, becoming huge and strong. You and I are part of this big tree of almost 2 billion people.

WORDS OF WISDOM
A şahabi is someone who met the Prophet at least once, accepted Islam while the Prophet was alive, and died as a Muslim. The sahabah are the best generation among Muslims, as the Prophet says in a hadith. They saw the Prophet. They lived with him. They prayed behind him. They heard his talks. They listened to his recitation of the Quran. They travelled with him. They supported him. They stood up for his message. They took Islam to many countries. They spread the Quran and the teachings of Islam after him. To honour their legacy, we should love them, follow their example, support Islam, and teach others about this beautiful religion.

WORDS OF WISDOM
Someone may ask, "If the companions are the best generation of Muslims, how come some of them disagreed and even fought against each other?" To answer this good question, think about the following points: We cannot question their intention or sincerity because we are not at their level of faith. As we mentioned before, the Prophet said that his companions are the best in the history of Islam. At the end of the day, the sahabah are great human beings, not angels. They wanted the best for the Muslim Ummah (nation). Hard decisions had to be made, and disagreements happened. Some of them got it right, and some got it wrong. Allah will be their Judge, not us. He already says in the Quran (9:100) that He is pleased with them and has prepared Jannah for them. The Jews respect the companions of Musa. The Christians respect the companions of 'Isa. We should love and respect the companions of Muhammad even more. The disagreement among some companions is another proof that Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah. He warned his companions that these disagreements were going to happen after his death and told them the best course of action. The part of verse 29 that says "the believers are tough with the disbelievers" refers to the idol-worshippers and other enemies who were at war with Muslims because of their faith. Otherwise, Islam encourages Muslims to treat peaceful non-Muslims with kindness and fairness, as Allah instructs in 60:8-9. One day, the Prophet was with his companions. He said to them, "I wish I could see my fellow believers (brothers and sisters)!" They asked, "Are we not your fellow believers?" He replied, "You are my companions. Our fellow believers will come later. They will believe in me without seeing me." He was then asked how he would recognize them on Judgment Day? He said, "They will come with brightness on their faces from making wudu' (purifying themselves for salah).

SIDE STORY
Verse 29 is very special to me. Around the summer of 1999, I had an American roommate. He used to make fun of my ability to type in English. Back then, I was new to computers, so I struggled to find the letters with one finger. I probably typed 4-5 words per minute, ma-sha-Allah (or should I say a'uzu-billah?). I said to myself, "I have to do something about it." I didn't know any local place where I could learn typing on a keyboard, so I booked a typing class. I practiced 3 times a week. I trained myself very well on how to find the keys on a typewriter. I memorized them. They got coded into my brain. Later, I saved some money from my translation work, and decided to buy my first computer. Finding out that some of the keys on the keyboard were different than those on the typewriter was a total nightmare. The struggle was real, because it is easier to learn something new than to unlearn something old. But I didn't give up. Then it so happened that someone gifted me a CD that teaches typing, so I used it to practice. Eventually, it paid off, and I was able to type an average of 40-50 words per minute, using all my fingers, without looking at the keyboard. By then I was probably typing faster than my roommate. But I wanted to take it to the next level: I taught myself how to type in Arabic-something he couldn't do. How did I do it? Here is the secret: I practiced with verse 48:29, because it has all 29 letters of the Arabic alphabet.

BELIEVERS' DESCRIPTION IN THE TAWRAH AND INJIL
29Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. And those with him are tough with the disbelievers and kind with each other. You see them kneeling and bowing down 'in salah', seeking Allah's blessings and pleasure. The sign 'of brightness can be seen' on their faces from the trace of bowing down. This is their description in the Tawrah. And their example in the Injil is that of a seed that sprouts its 'tiny' branches, making it strong. Then it becomes thick, standing perfectly on its stem, making the planters happy-in this way, Allah makes their strength a source of discomfort to the disbelievers. To those of them who believe and do good, Allah has promised forgiveness and a great reward.
