LEARNING POINTS
This surah talks about the nature and purpose of the Quran.
There are so many signs in the universe to prove Allah's creative power.
Those who make fun of Judgment Day will be in shock when that Day arrives.
The wicked are told that they are doomed for following Shayṭan, questioning the Quran, and calling the Prophet a poet.
The One Who created the universe can easily bring a simple creation like humans back to life.

WAKE-UP CALL
1Ya-Sin. 2By the Quran, full of wisdom! 3You 'O Prophet' are truly one of the Messengers 4upon the Straight Path. 5'This is' a revelation from the Almighty, Most Merciful, 6so that you may warn a people whose fathers were not warned, and so they are careless. 7The decision 'of punishment' has already come true against most of them, so they will never believe. 8'It is as if' We have put chains around their necks up to their chins, so their heads are forced up, 9and have put a barrier before them and a barrier behind them and covered them 'all' up, so they fail to see 'the truth'.
WHO BENEFITS FROM REMINDERS
10It is the same whether you warn them or notthey will never believe. 11You can only warn those who follow the Reminder' and honour the Most Kind without seeing Him. So give them good news of forgiveness and a generous reward. 12It is certainly We Who bring the dead back to life, and write whatever 'deeds' they send ahead 'for the Next Life' and what they leave behind. We have recorded everything in a perfect Book. 13¹ The Reminder is another name for the Quran.

BACKGROUND STORY
The following verses (13-32) were revealed as a warning to the Makkan idol-worshippers, to show them that Allah always supports his messengers. The story happened in Antakya (or Antioch, an ancient city on the border of today's Syria and Turkey). Allah sent two messengers to the idol-worshippers, but they quickly rejected them. So He sent a third messenger to support them. Just like the Makkans, those idol-worshippers argued against the messengers and asked them to leave because they would bring bad luck to their city. They even threatened to kill the messengers. When things got worse, a man from the city came to stand up for the messengers. (Recorded by Imam Ibn Kathir & Imam Al-Qurtubi)

WORDS OF WISDOM
As we can see in the following two passages, the verses don't mention the time of the story, the name of the city, or the names of the 3 messengers and the man who stood up for them. The same is true for the youth in the cave in Surah 18, most of the people in the story of Yusuf in Surah 12, the unknown believer from the people of Pharaoh in Surah 40, and many others throughout the Quran. Instead, the focus is on what you can learn from the story, making it valid for every people, time, and place. The Quran wants you to see the big picture and to be part of the story. Ask yourself: If I lived the story of the 3 messengers in Surah Ya-Sīn, would I stand up for the truth? If I lived the story of the youth in the cave, would I sacrifice for my faith? If I lived the story of Yusuf and his brothers, which side would I take? If I lived the story of Nuh, would I go on the Ark? If I lived the story of Aiyub, would I take care of him in his sickness? If I lived the story of Musa, would I stand with him against Pharaoh? If I lived the story of Muhammad, what would I do to support Islam?
THE 3 MESSENGERS
13Give them 'O Prophet' the example of the people of a society when the messengers came to them. 14At first, We sent them two messengers, but they rejected both. So We supported 'the two' with a third, and they declared, 'We have surely been sent to you 'as messengers.' 15The 'wicked' people replied, 'You are just humans like us, and the Most Kind has not revealed anything. You are simply lying!' 16The messengers said, 'Our Lord knows that we have definitely been sent to you.' 17And our duty is only to deliver 'the message' clearly.' 18The people replied, 'We surely see you as bad luck for us. If you do not stop, we will certainly stone you 'to death' and you will suffer a painful punishment from us.' 19The messengers said, 'Your bad luck is inside you. Are you just saying this because you are reminded of the truth'? In fact, you have gone too far in evil.'

BACKGROUND STORY
Verses 20-27 refer to a man (named Habib An-Najjar), who had a skin condition that lasted for many years. He prayed to the idols for a long time to heal him, but those powerless idols couldn't hear his prayers or help him at all. One day, he heard the 3 messengers and liked what they said. He told them that he was ready to follow them, but he needed a sign. So they prayed for him, and his skin was healed on the spot. He grew in faith, and used to work to provide for his family and help those in need. Eventually, the idol-worshippers became fed up with the 3 messengers and decided to kill them. When the news reached him at the end of the city, he rushed to defend them. He begged his people to follow the messengers and worship Allah, not those worthless idols. But his people were not too happy to hear his advice, so they beat him to death. When he was invited to enter Jannah, he wished that his people could see how Allah honoured him in the Next Life. So Allah told us his story. (Recorded by Imam Al-Qurtubi)

WORDS OF WISDOM
As we mentioned, the names of the 3 messengers and the man who stood up for them are not listed. But they left a great legacy, and their hard work is honoured in this surah. You don't have to be famous to leave a good legacy. You don't have to have 3 million followers on social media to achieve success in life. One good friend in real life is better than 1,000 online friends. Some people are so desperate for attention that they would do anything--even if it's silly, meaningless, or even harmful. Some day-it could be one month or 50 years from now-we will leave this world and move on to the Next Life. The only thing that will benefit us there is our good deeds, not how many shares or likes we got on social media.
STANDING UP FOR THE TRUTH
20And there came a man from the far side of the city, rushing. He advised, 'O my people! Follow the messengers.' 21Follow those who are asking you for no fee and are 'rightly' guided. 22And why should I not worship the One Who created me, and you will 'all' be returned to Him. 23How could I take--instead of Him--other gods who cannot speak in my defence at all, and cannot save me if the Most Kind wants to harm me? 24I would have then been clearly mistaken. 25I do believe in your Lord, so listen to me.' 26'But they killed him, then' he was told 'by the angels', 'Enter Jannah!' He said, 'I wish my people knew' 27of how my Lord has forgiven me, and made me one of those highly honoured.'
THE WICKED DESTROYED
28We did not send any forces from the heavens against his people after his death, because We did not need to. 29All it took was one 'mighty' blast and they immediately fell dead. 30Oh pity, poor souls! No messenger ever came to them without being mocked. 31Have the deniers not seen how many peoples We destroyed before them, who never came back to this world again? 32But 'in the end' they will all be brought in front of Us.
ALLAH'S SIGNS 1) THE EARTH
33There is a sign for them in the dead earth: We bring it back to life, producing grain from it for them to eat. 34And We have put in it gardens of date trees and grapes, and caused springs to flow in it, 35so that they may eat from its fruit, which is not of their own making. Will they not then give thanks? 36Glory be to the One Who created all pairs-such as plants of the earth, humankind, and other things unknown to them!

ALLAH'S SIGNS 2) THE DAY AND NIGHT
37There is also a sign for them in the night: We remove from it daylight, then suddenly they are in darkness. 38The sun travels its set course. That is the design of the Almighty, with perfect knowledge. 39As for the moon, We have set 'exact' phases for it, until it ends up like an old, curved date tree branch. 40It is not for the sun to catch up with the moon' or the night to outrun the day. Each is travelling in an orbit of their own.

ALLAH'S SIGNS 3) MERCY AT SEA
41Another sign for them is that We carried their ancestors 'with Nuh' in the fully-loaded Ark, 42and created for them similar things to ride. 43If We wanted, We could drown them: then no one would respond to their 'cries for help', and they would not be rescued- 44except by Our mercy, allowing them to enjoy life for a certain time.
ATTITUDE OF THE IDOL-WORSHIPPERS
45'Still they turn away' when they are told, 'Consider what is ahead of you 'in the Next Life' and what is behind you 'of destroyed nations' so you may be shown mercy.' 46Whenever a sign comes to them from their Lord, they turn away from it. 47And when they are told, 'Donate from what Allah has provided for you,' the disbelievers say to the believers, 'Why should we feed those who Allah could have fed if He wanted to? You are clearly wrong!'
TOO LATE FOR THE DENIERS
48And they ask 'the believers', 'When will this threat happen, if what you say is true?' 49They must be waiting for a single Blast,' which will hit them while they are 'lost' in 'useless' arguments. 50Then they will not be able to make a 'last' wish or return to their own people. 51The Trumpet will be blown 'a second time',' then-behold!-they will rush from the graves to their Lord. 52They will cry, 'We are doomed! Who has raised us up from our resting place? Oh no! This must be what the Most Kind warned us of; the messengers told the truth!' 53And so all it will take is just one Blast, then immediately they will all be brought in front of Us. 54On that Day no soul will be wronged in any way, and you will only be paid back for what you used to do.
REWARD OF THE BELIEVERS
55Surely on that Day the people of Jannah will be busy enjoying themselves. 56They and their spouses will be in 'cool' shade, relaxing on 'decorated' couches. 57There they will have fruits and whatever they desire. 58And 'Peace!' will be 'their' greeting from the Merciful Lord.
PUNISHMENT OF THE DISBELIEVERS
59'The disbelievers will be told, 'Step away 'from the believers' this Day, O wicked ones!' 60Did I not tell you, 'O Children of Adam, not to follow Satan because he is clearly your enemy, 61but to worship Me 'alone'? This is the Straight Path. 62Yet he already misled you in large numbers. Did you not have any sense? 63This is Hell, which you were warned of. 64Burn in it Today for your disbelief.' 65On this Day We will seal their mouths, their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will tell what they used to do.'
ALLAH'S POWER OVER THE DENIERS
66If We wanted, We could have easily blinded their eyes, so they would struggle to find their way. How then could they see? 67And if We wanted, We could have turned them into something else on the spot, so they could not move forward or turn back. 68And whoever We give a long life, We reverse them in development.' Will they not then understand? 69¹ Human beings are born weak, then they mature and become strong, then they become old and weak (30:54).
THE PROPHET IS NOT A POET
69We have not taught him poetry, and it is not fitting for him. This 'Book' is only a Reminder and a clear Quran 70to warn whoever is truly alive, and the decision 'of punishment' comes true against the disbelievers.
ALLAH'S SIGNS 4) FARM ANIMALS
71Do they not see that We created for them-with Our Own Hands'-cattle to be at their service? 72And We have put these 'animals' under their control, so they may ride some and eat others. 73And they take from them other benefits and drinks. Will they not then give thanks? 74¹ Meaning all by Ourselves, without help from anyone else.
UNGRATEFUL DENIERS
74Still they have taken other gods besides Allah, hoping to get some help 'on Judgment Day'. 75Those 'idols' cannot help them, even though those 'people' always serve them as guards. 76So do not let their words upset you 'O Prophet':' Surely We 'fully' know what they hide and what they show. 77¹ Meaning do not be sad because of the false things they say about you, the Quran, and life after death.

BACKGROUND STORY
An idol-worshipper, named Ubai ibn Khalaf, was one of the biggest enemies of Islam. One day, he came to the Prophet with rotten bones. He then smashed those bones and started making fun of the Prophet, saying, 'Wow! Do you claim that Allah will bring those rotten bones back to life?' The Prophet replied, 'Absolutely! He will bring them back to life, and then raise you from the dead, and throw you in the Fire.' So, verses 77-83 were revealed. (Recorded by Imam Ibn Kathir & Imam Al-Qurtubi)

WORDS OF WISDOM
The idol-worshippers found it difficult to believe in life after death. So, in this surah, Allah tells them: If He can bring the universe into existence, If He can bring plants out of dead land, If He can bring trees out of dry seeds, If He can bring fruits out of trees, If He can bring milk out of animals, If He can bring the day out of the night, then He can easily bring the dead back to life for judgment.

ALLAH CAN BRING ALL BACK TO LIFE
77Do people not realize that We have created them from a human seed, and now--behold!they clearly challenge Us? 78And they argue with Us-forgetting how they were created-saying, 'Who can bring rotten bones back to life?' 79Say, 'O Prophet, 'They will be revived by the One Who created them the first time, and He has 'perfect' knowledge of every creation. 80'He is the One' Who gives you fire from green trees, and--behold!you kindle 'fire' from them!' 81Can the One Who created the heavens and the earth not bring 'a simple creation like' humans back to life?' Yes, He can! He is the Master Creator, with perfect knowledge. 82All it takes when He wants something 'to come into existence' is simply to say to it: 'Be!' And it is! 83So glory be to the One with authority in His Hands over all things, and you will 'all' be returned to Him 'for judgment'.
