The Standard

Al-Furqân

LEARNING POINTS

LEARNING POINTS

Allah is the only True God Who deserves our worship.

Allah has blessed us with so many things that we should be grateful for.

The idol-worshippers are criticized for rejecting Allah, neglecting the Quran, and mocking the Prophet (ﷺ).

The idols are powerless and useless.

The Makkans keep demanding ridiculous things and making false claims about the Quran.

The idol-worshippers are warned of being destroyed like the wicked peoples of the past.

Allah can easily bring everyone back to life for judgment.

Allah is willing to forgive people if they repent in this life.

On Judgment Day, the wicked will regret their arrogance, but it will be too late.

This surah ends with some amazing qualities of Allah's faithful servants.

DENYING ALLAH

1Blessed is the One Who sent down the Standard that tells right from wrong¹ to His servant, so he can be a warner to the whole world. 2'Allah is' the One Who owms the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He has never had any children. He does not have any partner in the kingdom. And He has created every-thing. planning it perfectly. 3Yet, those 'idol-worshippers' have taken besides Him gods who cannot create anything but are themselves created. They cannot protect or benefit themselves. And they have no power to give life, cause death, or bring anyone back to life.

Verse 1: The Standard (A-Furqan) is one of the names of the Quran.

Verse 2: Prophet Muhammad.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

Some Arab idol-worshippers claimed that the Prophet (ﷺ) had been taught the Quran by some non-Arab Christians. The Quran itself (16:103) responds to this claim by arguing that it is impossible for a non-Arab to come up with a book in perfect Arabic like the Quran, especially when the masters of Arabic themselves failed to match its unique style. {Imam Al-Baghawi & Imam Ibn 'Ashur}

DENYING THE QURAN

4The disbelievers claim, "This Quran' is only a bunch of lies which he made up with the help of others" Their claim is totally unfair and untrue! 5And they Say, 'These revelations are just' fairy tales which he got written down, and they are rehearsed to him day and night.' 6Say, "O Prophet,"'This Quran' has been revealed by the One Who knows the se-crets of the heavens and the earth. He is truly Forgiving and Merciful."³

Verse 6: He forgives those who repent, and gives second chances to those who do not.

DENYING THE PROPHET

7And they say 'mockingly', "What kind of messenger is this who eats food and goes about in marketplaces 'for a living'? He should have some angel with him as a warner, 8or he should receive a trea-sure from above, or at least he should have a garden to eat from!' And those who do wrong say 'to the believers', 'You are just following a man under a spell.' 9See what names they call you 'O Proph-et'! They have strayed so far that they cannot find the 'Right' Way. 10Blessed is the One Who can give you much better thíngs than all that if He wants: gardens under which rivers flow, and palaces as well.

PUNISHMENT OF THE WICKED

11In fact, they deny the Hour 'of Judg-ment'. And for the deniers of the Hour. We have prepared a blazing Fire. 12Once it sees them from a distance, they will hear it raging and roaring. 13And when they are dumped into a narrow place in-side, chained together, they will 'quickly' beg for death. 14'They will be told, "Do not beg only once for death Today, but beg many times over!"

REWARD OF THE FAITHFUL

15Say, "O Prophet, 'Is this 'horrible fate' better or the Garden of Eternity which the faithful have been promised as a re-ward and a final destination? 16There they will have whatever they wish for, forever. That is a true promise from your Lord, worth praying for

THE WICKED ARE LET DOWN

17Watch for' the Day He will gather those "idol-worshippers' along with what they used to worship besides Allah, and ask 'those objects of worship'⁴ "Was it you who misguided these creatures of Mine, or did they lose the way on their own?" 18They will say, "Glory be to You! It was not right for any of your creation to take other lords besides You, but You let them and their fathers enjoy themselves "for so long' that they forgot all about You, and now deserve to be doomed." 19"The doomed will be told', "Your gods have clearly denied your claims. So now you cannot avoid the punishment' or get any help." And whoever of you keeps doing wrong, We will make them taste a massive punishment.

Verse 17: Like 'lsa so, and the angels.

MESSENGERS ARE HUMAN

20We never sent any messenger before you ˹O Prophet˺, who did not eat food and go about in marketplaces. We have made some of you as a test for others. Will you be patient? Your Lord sees 'ev-erything'.

DESPERATE TO MEET THE ANGELS?

21Those who do not expect to meet Us say 'arrogantly', "Why are the angels not sent down to us?" or "Why do we not see our Lord?"⁵ They have definitely been carried away by their arrogance, and have completely gone too far in evil. 22But on the Day they will finally see the angels, there will be no good news for the wicked, who will cry, 'Keep away! Away from us!' 23Then We will proceed to whatever 'good' deeds they did, turning them into scattered dust, blown away.⁶ 24But on that Day, the people of Jannah will have the finest home and the best place to rest.

Verse 21: They want Allah Himself and the angels to come down and prove to them that Muhammad is actually a prophet.

Verse 23: The good deeds of the disbelievers (including charity) will have no weight on Judgment Day.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

One day, an idol-worshipper, named 'Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ait, invited the Makkan leaders for dinner. The Prophet (ﷺ) was also invited, but he told 'Uqbah that he wasn't going to eat until he accepted Islam. To honour his guest, 'Uqbah agreed. However, 'Uqbah had an evil friend, named Ubai ibn Khalaf, who missed the dinner. When Ubai heard that his friend had become a Muslim, he got very angry.

He went to 'Uqbah and pressured him to leave Islam. Not only that, he also convinced him to insult the Prophet (ﷺ) and spit at him. Verses 27-29 were revealed to warn 'Uqbah of a horrible punishment for what he did just to please his friend. {Imam At-Tabari & Imam Al-Qurtubi}

SIDE STORY

SIDE STORY

A-A'sha was a famous poet who worshipped idols and lived a spoiled life. When he heard about Islam in his old age, he decided to travel to meet the Prophet (ﷺ) and accept Islam. On the way, he came across some old friends. When they heard that he came to praise the Prophet (ﷺ) with a poem and become a Muslim, they tried to convince him to change his mind. To scare him off, they said that Islam bans romantic relationships outside of marriage. He told them that he was too old for that anyway.

But they didn't give up. They knew how much he loved wine, so they told him that Islam also bans alcohol. Now he became a bit hesitant. Eventually, he said that he would go back home, enjoy drinking for a year and then decide what to do. Sadly, he died on the way home and never accepted Islam. {Imam Ibn Hisham in his Sirah}

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

As we mentioned in Surah 53, we should try to please Allah, because it's almost impossible to please everyone, especially those who want us to do bad things. Not everyone will be happy with everything that you do, no matter how nice you are. The following is a famous Arabic poem that explains this topic, along with my humble English translation:

I have pleased all people, except for the envious person, who can only be pleased by my own death. So how can I find a way to please a person, whom nothing pleases but my own death? I am going to ignore the foolish person from now on and be happy to let him get mad at me.

USELESS REGRET ON JUDGMENT DAY

25Watch for the Day the heavens will burst with clouds, and the angels will be sent down all over. 26True authority on that Day will belong "only' to the Most Kind. It is going to be a tough day for the disbelievers. 27And 'watch for' the Day the evil person will bite his nails in regret' and say, "Oh no! I wish I had followed the Way along with the Messenger! 28Shame on me! I wish I had never taken so-and-so as a close friend; 29he really made me stray from the Reminder after it had reached me." And Satan has always betrayed humankind.

Verse 26: Some people (like kings and rulers) have some sort of authority in this world. But on Judgment Day, no one will have any authority except Allah.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

Verse 30 criticizes those who neglect the Quran. According to Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, people neglect the Quran by not reading it, not listening to it, not understanding it, not thinking deeply about its meanings, not living according to its teachings, not accepting its rulings, and not accepting it as a source of healing.

MAKKANS NEGLECT THE QURAN

30The Messenger has complained, "O my Lord! My people keep neglecting this Qu-ran" 31In the same way, We made some of the wicked as enemies to every 1 prophet. But your Lord is enough as a Guide and Helper. 32The disbelievers argue, "Why was this Quran not revealed to him all at once?" But We have revealed it this way just to strengthen your heart with it. We have carefully spaced it out. 33Every time they come up with an argument, We give you the right response and the best explanation. 34Those dragged into Hell on their faces will be in the worst place, and are 'now' farthest from the 'Right' Way.

THE WICKED ALWAYS DESTROYED

35We surely gave Musa the Book and appointed his brother Harun as his help-er. 36We had ordered 'them, "Go to the people who would deny Our signs." Then We destroyed the deniers completely. 37And when the people of Nuh rejected the messengers,⁹ We drowned them, making them an example to humanity. And We have prepared a painful punish-ment for those who do wrong. 38Also, We destroyed ''Ad, Thamud, and the peo-ple of the Water-hole,¹⁰ as well as many peoples in between. 39We gave each of them many lessons, but totally destroyed each 'in the end'. 40These 'Makkans must have already passed by the city 'of Lut', which had been showered with a horrible rain 'of stones'. Have they not seen its ruins? In fact, they do not expect a second life.

Verse 38: Shu'aib was sent to the people of the Water-hole, along with the people of Madian.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

As we mentioned at the end of Surah 33, everything in nature obeys the laws of Allah: the planets travel in their fixed orbits, the sun and the moon follow their cycles precisely, seeds grow out of the earth, trees lose their leaves in the winter and grow new ones in the spring, and mountains make the earth stable. All animals on the earth, birds in the sky, fish in the ocean, and everything—from the biggest blue whale to the smallest germ—submit to Allah.

According to verse 25:44, animals are obedient and loyal to their owners who care for them. Also, they can easily find their way. Unlike animals, the idol-worshippers are disobedient and ungrateful to their Master Who provides for them. They choose to stray from the right path and don't care about the consequences. {Imam Al-Qurtubi}

WARNING TO THE MAKKANS

41When they see you ˹O Prophet˺, they only make fun of you, ˹saying˺, “Is this the messenger that Allah has sent? 42He almost tricked us away from our gods, if we did not stick to them.' But soon, when they face the punishment, they will real-ize who has gone too far from the 'Right' Way. 43Have you seen the ones who have taken their own desires as their god? Will you then be a keeper over them? 44Or do you think that most of them listen or un-derstand?¹¹ They are just like cattle--no, worse than that, they have strayed far from the 'Right' Way!

Verse 44: They just follow others blindly.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

According to verses 45-47, one of the great favours of Allah on us is that He allows the sun to rise in the morning, causing darkness to slowly go away. He could easily have stopped the sun and the earth from rotating. If this happened, half of the globe would be facing the sun all the time and the other half would be covered in darkness. This means that it would be daytime on one side forever and night-time on the other side forever. If this was the case, life on earth would have been disrupted, because there would be only one season on each side of the planet. But Allah has allowed the sun and the earth to rotate so that we can work during the day, rest at night, and experience the 4 seasons. {Imam Ibn 'Ashur}

ALLAH'S POWER

45Have you not seen how your Lord eX-. tends the shade-He could have simply made it stand still, if He wanted-then We make the sun its guide, 46causing the shade to move away bit by bit? 47He is the One Who has made the night for you as a cover, and 'made' sleep for resting, and the day for rising up. 48And He is the One Who sends the winds carrying good news of His mercy, and We send down pure rain from the sky, 49giving life to a lifeless land and providing wa-ter for many animals and humans of Our Own creation. 50We have already repeat-ed this lesson so everyone can keep it in mind, but most people just choose to dis-believe. 51If We wanted, We could have easily sent a warner to every society.¹² 52So do not give in to the disbelievers, but do your best against them with this Quran'. 53And He is the One Who joins the two bodies of water: one fresh and Sweet and the other salty and bitter, plac-ing between them a barrier they cannot cross. 54And He is the One Who creates humans from a little' fluid,¹³ then made them related by blood and marriage. Your Lord has "perfect power. 55Yet, instead of Allah, those 'Makkans' worship things that cannot benefit or harm them. The disbelievers always team up against their Lord.

ADVICE TO THE PROPHET

56We have sent you only to give good news and warnings. 57Say, "I am not asking you for any fees for delivering' this 'message', but whoever wishes, let them take the Way leading to their Lord." 58Put your trust in the Living, Who nev-er dies, and praise His glory. It is enough that your Lord fully knows the sins of His servants. 59He is' the One Who created the heavens and the earth and every-thing in between in six Days, then estab-lished Himself on the Throne. "He is' the Most Kind! Ask 'only' the One with per-fect knowledge about Himself.

DENYING ALLAH

60When it is said to them, "Bow down to the Most Kind," they ask 'in disgust', "What is 'the Most Kind'? Are we sup-posed to bow down to whatever you order us to?" And it only drives them farther away. 61Blessed is the One Who has put sets of stars in the sky, as well as a 'shining' lamp¹⁴ and a bright moon. 62And He is the One Who made the day and the night to follow each other, 'as a sign' for whoever wants to remember 'Him' or give thanks.

QUALITIES OF THE FAITHFUL

63The 'true' servants of the Most Kind are those who walk on the earth hum-bly, and when the foolish speak to them 'rudely', they only respond with peace. 64'They are' those who spend 'a good part of the night, bowing down and standing to their Lord. 65'They are' those who pray, "Our Lord! Keep the punishment of Jahannam away from us; its punishment is never-ending, 66It is an evil place to settle and stay." 67'They are' those who do not spend too much or too little money', but halfway in between. 68'They are' those who do not call any other god besides Allah, or take a hu-man' life protected by Allah, except with legal right, or have illegal relationships. And whoever does any of this will suf-fer the evil consequences. 69Their pun-ishment will be multiplied on Judgment Day, and they will be stuck there in dis-grace forever. 70As for those who re-pent, have faith, and do good, Allah will change their misdeeds into good deeds. Allah is always Forgiving and Merci-ful. 71And whoever repents and does good has truly turned to Allah properly. 72'They are' those who do not give false witness, and when they come across falsehood, they pass by with dignity. 73'They are' those who do not turn a blind eye or a deaf ear when reminded of the revelations of their Lord. 74'They are' those who pray, 'Our Lord! Bless us with 'good' spouses and children who will be the joy of our hearts, and make us models for the faithful." 75Those 'true believers' will be rewarded with 'high' mansions 'in Jannah' for their patience, and will be received with warm' wel-come and 'greetings of' peace, 76Staying there forever. What an excellent place to settle and stay!

MESSAGE TO HUMANITY

77Say, "O Prophet, "You only matter to my Lord if you have faith 'in Him'. But now you "disbelievers' have rejected 'the truth', so the punishment is sure to come.’
