THE INTRODUCTION

1'This is' a surah which We have sent down, with rules to be followed, and revealed in it clear lessons so that you may keep them in mind.

PUNISHMENT FOR ILLEGAL ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS

2As for any 'single' woman or man guilty of illegal relationships, give each of them one hundred lashes,' and do not be soft with them when you apply the law of Al-lah, if you 'truly' believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a number of believers witness their punishment.

Verse 2: For the legal authorities to apply the punishment, the illegal relationship has to be proven by confession or by 4 reliable witnesses.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

One of the companions, named Marthad ibn Abi Marthad (R.A.), used to know an indecent Makkan idol-worshipping woman before he became Muslim. Later, when Marthad (R.A.) accepted Islam, he asked the Prophet (ﷺ) if he could marry that woman. Verse 3 was revealed, telling Marthad (R.A.) that he shouldn't marry that idol-worshipping woman. {Imam At-Tirmidhi}

It's important to note that Islam opens the door for people to repent. Those who sinned in the past and then changed their ways will be accepted by Allah and the rest of the Muslim community, as long as they are sincere.

3An indecent man would only marry an indecent woman or a female idol-worshipper. And an indecent woman would only marry an indecent man or a male idol-worshipper: But this is all forbidden to the believers.

ACCUSATION WITHOUT PROOF

4As for those who accuse decent women 'of illegal relationships' but fail to bring four witnesses, give each of them eighty lashes. And do not ever accept them as witnesses, because they are truly cor-rupt. 5As for those who repent after that and change their ways, then surely Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

MEN ACCUSING THEIR WIVES

6And those who accuse their wives 'of cheating' but have no witness except themselves, the accuser must swear four times by Allah that he is telling the truth, 7and swear a fifth time that Al-lah may doom him if he is lying. 8For her punishment to be waived, she must Swear four times by Allah that he is lying, 9and swear a fifth time thatAllah may be angry with her if he is telling the truth.2 10You would have suffered,' if it was not for Allah's kindness and mercy upon you. But Allah is always willing to accept re-pentance and is full of wisdom.

Verse 9: This ruling is called li'an in Islamic legal system. Once the hus-band and the wife each swears five times, the marriage is over, which means that they can never be remarried.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

After the Battle of Uhud, where the Muslims had been defeated, some tribes thought that the Muslim community in Madinah had become weak. Those tribes started to prepare for attacks on the city. The Prophet (ﷺ) had to lead campaigns to stop those tribes from reaching Madinah. During one of those campaigns, he was joined by his wife, 'Aishah (R.A.). Back then, women usually traveled inside a structure that looked like a small tent on top of a camel. After a short break on the road, the caravan left the camp, not knowing that 'Aishah (R.A.) was not inside. She had gone to look for a necklace that she had lost. By the time she came back, everyone was gone, so she had to wait there alone. Shortly after, a companion named Safwan (R.A.) came and realized that she had been left behind, so he escorted her to the caravan.

Soon the hypocrites started to spread false rumours about 'Aishah (R.A.) and Safwan (R.A.). Many people shared this fake news all over the city, including some Muslims. 'Aishah (R.A.) strongly denied those claims and prayed to Allah to clear her name. This was a very difficult time for the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Muslim community.

Finally, after a month, Allah revealed verses 11-26 to declare her innocence. The verses also instructed the believers on how they should have reacted to these lies. Those who started and spread the rumours were warned of a horrible punishment. {Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim}

THOSE WHO ACCUSED THE PROPHET'S WIFE

11Indeed, those who came up with that offensive' lie are a group of you. Do not think this is bad for you. Rather, it is good for you 'after all' They will be punished, each according to their share of the sin. As for their mastermind,' he will suffer a horrible punishment.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

When 'Aishah (R.A.) was falsely accused and the rumours started to spread, one of the companions, named Abu Aiyub Al-Ansari (R.A.), discussed the situation with his wife. He asked, "Don't you hear what people say about the Prophet's wife?" She replied, "It's all lies." He then said, "If you were 'Aishah (R.A.), would you do something like that?" She said, "Impossible!" He commented, "By Allah! 'Aishah (R.A.) is better than you, and it's even more impossible for her to do that." She then said to him, "If you were Safwan (R.A.), would you do something like that?" He replied, "Impossible!" She commented, "By Allah! Safwan (R.A.) is better than you, and it's even more impossible for him to do that."

According to many scholars, verse 12 came down to teach the believers that they should have reacted like Abu Aiyub (R.A.) and his wife. {Imam Ibn Kathir & Imam Al-Qurtubi}

A man came to the imam after Jum'ah to tell him something that he had heard about another community member. The imam told him, "Before you say anything, let's run the Triple Filter Test!" The man didn't know what that test was. The imam explained that the test was made up of 3 simple questions to filter out what the man was going to say. The imam said, "The first filter: are you absolutely sure that what you've heard about that person is true?" The man replied that he wasn't sure because he had just heard it from someone else. The imam then said, "The second filter: was it something good that you heard about that person?" The man replied that it wasn't.

The imam then said, "The third filter: is what you want to tell me going to be beneficial to any of us?" The man replied, "Not really." The imam responded, "If what you want to tell me about that person is not true, good, or beneficial, then what is the point of sharing it with me?"

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

The Triple Filter Test is very important, especially when we deal with people. We can use this test when we share: rumours about our friends without verifying the information; conspiracies (false or misleading pieces of information) on social media without double-checking to see if they are true; or statements (hadiths) from the Prophet (ﷺ) without making sure he actually said those words.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

Verse 12 teaches us a great Islamic concept called `husnu az-zann`, which means to think well of others. For example, we should think highly of Allah. When we pray, we trust that He will answer our du'a. If it isn't answered right away, we trust that Allah has a better plan for us when the right time comes. If we do something good, we trust that He will give us a great reward. If we pray for forgiveness, we trust that He will forgive us. If we leave this world, we trust that He will shower us with mercy and give us Jannah.

We should also think well of people and give them the benefit of the doubt. We should try to find excuses and not jump to conclusions if they make a mistake or fall short of our expectations. If a friend didn't reply to your message right away, this doesn't necessarily mean they were ignoring you. Maybe they just got very busy with an emergency. If they don't like a post you shared on social media, this doesn't mean they don't like you anymore. Maybe they simply didn't see it. Thinking well or bad of others shows who we really are. Good people think other people are good, and bad people think all people are bad.

Once upon a time, there lived a farmer who lost his axe. He thought his neighbour was the thief. His neighbour was acting like a thief, walking like a thief, and talking like a thief. His neighbour's wife looked like a thief too. And their kids looked like little thieves. When he heard them talking, he thought they were talking about his axe. When he heard them laughing, he thought they were cracking jokes about him. When he saw them doing their homework, he thought they were planning their next theft.

Two days later, just as he was planning to go to war against his criminal neighbours, he found the missing axe under a pile of straw in his backyard. Suddenly, his neighbour was no longer a thief. The neighbour's wife and kids became normal too. The man realized that his neighbours were not thieves—he was the thief because he stole their dignity.

A man was waiting at the airport for his flight. He bought a book and a small box of cookies from the airport shops and then took a seat in front of the gate. While he was reading the book, he noticed that the old lady sitting next to him was boldly eating from his own cookies. The man was annoyed by her behaviour. Every time he took a cookie, she happily took one too. Then her flight was called and there was only one cookie left inside the box. She looked at him, split the cookie, put one half in her mouth, and offered him the other half. He snatched it from her hand as she left with a big smile on her face.

The man was very angry by then. He said to himself, "Such an ungrateful cookie thief! She just left without even saying thank you." Then his flight was called, so he boarded the plane and sat on his seat, and continued reading his book. Later, when he opened his bag to put the passport inside, he was surprised to find a full box of cookies inside. It turned out that he was eating that lady's cookies the whole time. She even shared the last cookie with him. He felt very sorry, but it was too late to apologize because the old lady was already on a different flight.

Imam Ibrahim ibn Adham was a scholar and a good man. One day, he was sitting with some of his friends when a distant neighbour passed by without greeting them. Ibrahim didn't say, 'Why is this man so arrogant that he doesn't even give us salam.' Instead, he sent an assistant to ask him if everything was alright. The man said that he was stressed out because his wife had given birth and he just realized that they didn't have any supplies in the house. This is why his mind was so busy that he forgot to say salam to the imam.

After hearing what happened, Imam Ibrahim felt sorry for the man and told his assistant to go to the market and buy enough supplies for that man's house.

There was a generous man named Yahya ibn Talhah. His wife complained to him one day, saying, "Your friends are not good people, because they only come to you when you have money, but when you don't have money they never come to you." He replied, "This is a proof that they are good people, because they only come to us when they know we are able to help them. But when we don't have anything to offer, they don't want to become a burden on us."

HOW THE BELIEVERS SHOULD HAVE REACTED

12The believing men and women should have thought well of each other, when you first heard this 'rumour', and said, 'This is clearly fake!' 13Why did they bring four witnesses? Now, since they have failed to bring witnesses, they are truly' liars in the sight of Allah. 14If it was not for Allah's s kindness and mercy upon you in this s life and the Next, you would have really been hit with a horri-ble punishment for what you got your-selves into. 15'Remember' when you nassed this 'lie' from one tongue to an-other, and said with your mouths what you knew nothing about. You took it lightly while it is extremely serious in the sight of Allah. 16As soon as you heard it, you should have said, 'How can we speak about such a thing! Good Lord! This is a horrible lie!' 17Allah forbids you from ever doing something like this again, if you are 'true' believers. 18Allah makes the lessons clear to you. And Allah has perfect knowledge and wisdom.

WARNING AGAINST SHAMEFUL ACTS

19Surely, those who like shameful news to spread among the believers will suffer d painful punishment in this life and the Next. Allah knows and you do not know. 20'You would have suffered,' if it was not for Allah's kindness and mercy upon you. But Allah is always Kind and Most Mer-ciful.

WARNING AGAINST SATAN

21O believers! Do not follow the foot-steps of Satan. Whoever follows Satan's footsteps, then let them know that' he definitely promotes shameful and wick-ed deeds. If it was not for Allah's kind-ness and mercy upon you, none of you would have ever been purified 'of sin'. But Allah purifies whoever He wants. And Allah hears and knows 'everything',

A man met his teacher at a restaurant 30 years after leaving primary school. He asked if the teacher remembered him, but the teacher said he wasn't sure. The man said, "Do you remember when another student in the same class brought a beautiful watch to school? During the lunch break, the watch was stolen from his bag and he came to you in tears to report his stolen watch. You told us to line up against the wall with our eyes closed. Then you searched our bags, one by one, and finally found the watch in the bag of one of the students in the middle of the line. The thief got very worried that you were going to humiliate him in front of the entire class and maybe get him kicked out of school. But you didn't. You continued with the search till the very last bag before asking everyone to open their eyes and go back to their seats. Then you gave back the watch to the student who had lost it."

The man then confessed, "I was that thief. But thanks to you, nobody knew about what I did." The teacher cleared his throat and said, "Oh, I didn't know who stole it either because I kept my eyes closed when I was searching the bags. I covered your mistake, hoping that Allah will cover mine."

Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (R.A.), 'Aishah's father, used to give money to his poor cousin Mistah (R.A.). When he found out that Mistah (R.A.) was one of the people who spread lies about 'Aishah (R.A.), he decided to stop supporting him. Verse 22 was revealed, telling Abu Bakr (R.A.) to continue giving charity to Mistah (R.A.) and forgive him. Abu Bakr (R.A.) promised to continue his support, hoping to receive Allah's forgiveness and blessings in return. {Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim}

Allah loves it when people give to those in need. This is why Zakah is one of the five pillars of Islam. A person should pay 2.5% in Zakah if they have money equal to the value of 85 gm of gold and if the money is saved for one Hijri year (355 days). People are also encouraged to give Sadaqah, which includes any amount paid at any time of the year. In Arabic, the word 'Zakah' means to purify and increase. Islam promises a great reward for donating.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Money never decreases by giving charity." {Imam Muslim}

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Charity puts out sins just like water puts out fire." {Imam Ahmad}

This is a true story that happened in Afghanistan many years ago. A restaurant owner cooked a big amount of food for dinner, hoping to sell everything in the evening as usual. Suddenly, there was a wild rainstorm that caused a power outage. The owner panicked because no one would come to the restaurant that night and they couldn't keep all the food in the fridges because the power was out.

Not long after, he saw 3 figures coming towards his restaurant in the dark. At first, he thought they were thieves, but it turned out to be a poor woman with her 2 kids who came to ask for charity. She told him that they had not eaten for the last couple of days. He felt sorry for them, served them the best meal in his restaurant, and gave them some money. Before they left, the woman prayed to Allah to bless his business.

Illustration

After they left, the owner sat down to calculate how much he would lose if he threw out all the food. Suddenly, a big bus came out of nowhere and stopped in front of his restaurant. More than 40 travellers came to buy dinner from him. They ate all the food and he even had to cook more for them on his gas stove. That night, he made much more money than any other night because of the charity that he had given to that lady and her kids.

DO NOT STOP YOUR KINDNESS

22The people of goodness and wealth among you should not swear to suspend donations to their relatives, the needy, and the emigrants in the cause of Allah. Let them excuse and forgive. Do you not love to be forgiven by Allah? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

PUNISHMENT FOR FALSE ACCUSATION

23Surely those who accuse decent, inno-cent, believing women are cursed in this life and the Next. And they will suffer a horrible punishment 24on the Day their tongues, hands, and feet will tell every-thing they did. 25On that Day, Allah will fully pay them back what they deserve, and they will realize that Alah is the Su-preme Truth.

26Wicked women are for wicked men, and wicked men are for wicked wom-en. Decent women are for decent men, and decent men are for decent women. Those 'decent believers' are innocent of what the wicked say. They will have for-giveness and generous resources.

ENTERING PRIVATE & PUBLIC PLACES

27O believers! Do not enter other people's homes until you ask for permission and greet those living there. This is best for you, so perhaps you will keep it in mind. 28If you find no one at home, do not enter until you are given permission. And if you are asked to leave, then leave. That is more proper for you. And Allah has 'perfect' knowledge of what you do. 29There is nothing wrong if you enter public places to serve your needs. And Allah knows what you show and what you hide,

ADVICE TO MUSLIM MEN

30Tell the believing men 'O Prophet!' to lower their gaze and guard their dignity. That is more proper for them. Surely Al-lah is fully Aware of what they do.

ADVICE TO MUSLIM WOMEN

31And tell the believing women to low-their gaze and guard their dignity, and not to reveal their "hidden' beauty' except what normally shows. And let their veils cover their chests, and not reveal their "hidden' beauty² except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their stepsons, their brothers, their brothers' sons or sisters' sons, their fellow women, their slaves, their male servants with no desire, or children who are too young to under-stand women's privacy. Let them not stomp their feet, attracting attention their hidden beauty. Repent to Allah all together, O believers, so you may be suc-cessful.

Verse 31: i.e., hair, arms, and legs.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

'Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul was a hypocrite who lived in Madinah. He used to force his female slaves into illegal relationships so he could make money. Those slaves complained to the Prophet (ﷺ), so verse 33 was revealed to end this evil practice. {Imam Muslim}

ADVICE TO GUARDIANS

32Marry off the singles among you, as well as the faithful of your male and fe-male slaves. If they are poor, Allah will enrich them through His favours. Allah is full of blessings and knowledge. 33As for those who cannot afford to marry, they should control their desire until Allah enriches them through His favours. And if any of your slaves want to buy their own freedom, make it possible for them, if you find goodness in them. And give them some of the wealth that Allah has given you. Do not force your 'slave' girls into illegal relationships for your own gain in this life, while they want to stay decent. And if someone forces them, then Allah will be Forgiving and Merciful to them for being forced. 34We have al-ready sent down to you clear revelations, along with examples of those who had gone before you,¹⁰ and a lesson to those who keep Allah in mind.

Verse 34: Before 'Aishah , Maryam and Prophet Yusuf a had each been falsely accused of doing something shameful, but Allah declared their innocence.

LIGHT OF FAITH

35Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. His light is like an opening "on a wall' in which there is a lamp. The lamp is in a crystal. The crystal is like a shining star, lit from "the oil of a blessed olive tree, neither 'located' towards the east nor the west.!' Its oil would almost glow, even without being touched by fire. Light upon light! Allah guides whoever He wants to His light. Allah gives examples for humanity. And Allah has perfect' knowledge of all things. 36That light shines' through the houses 'of worship which Allah has ordered to be raised, and where His Name is mentioned. He is praised there morning and evening 37by men who are not distracted-by buying or selling-from remembering Allah, praying salah, or paying zakah. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be restless, 38hoping' that Allah will reward them according to the best of their deeds and increase them as a fa-vour from Him. And Allah provides for whoever He wants without limit.

Verse 35: Meaning the olive tree is covered by sunlight all day-long, whích allows it to produce fine oil.

DARKNESS OF DISBELIEF

39As for the disbelievers, their deeds are like a mirage in a desert, which the thirsty mistake for water. But when they come close to it, they find it to be nothing. Instead, they find Allah there 'in the Next Life, ready' to settle their ac-count. And Allah is quick in judgment. 40Or their deeds are' like the depths of darkness in a bottomless ocean, covered by waves upon waves, topped by dark clouds. Darkness upon darkness! If one stretches out their hand, they can hardly see it. And whoever Allah does not bless with light will have no light!

Verse 40: This is another scientific fact mentioned in the Quran: the ex-istence of underwater waves, like layers.

FULL SUBMISSION TO ALLAH

41Do you not realize that Allah is praised by everyone in the heavens and the earth, even the birds as they glide? Each of them naturally knows its own way of prayer and praise. And Allah has 'perfect' knowledge of what they do. 42The kingdom of the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah. And to Allah is the final return.

THE MIRACLE OF RAIN

43Do you not see that Allah gently drives the clouds, then joins them together, pil-ing themn up, from which you see rain Come out? And He sends down from the Sky mountains of clouds loaded with nall, pouring it on whoever He wants and keeping it away from whoever He wants. The flash of the lightning almost takes away eyesight. 44Allah rotates the day and night. Surely in this is a lesson for those who are wise.

THE MIRACLE OF CREATION

45And Allah has created every living creature from water:. Some of them crawl on their bellies, some walk on two feet, and some walk on four. Allah creates whatever He wants. Surely Allah has power over all things.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

There was a hypocrite named Bishr who had a conflict with a Jewish man over a piece of land. The Jew told him, "Let's go to Muhammad (ﷺ) to judge between us." But Bishr refused, arguing, "We should go to someone else, because the Prophet (ﷺ) is not going to judge fairly between us." So verses 47-50 were revealed to criticize this unfaithful attitude. {Imam At-Tabari & Imam Al-Qurtubi}

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

Like many Madani surahs, this surah talks about the evil attitudes and practices of the hypocrites. The scholars say that there are 2 types of hypocrisy: hypocrisy in belief, which means that a person pretends to be a Muslim but they are disbelievers at heart. The Quran says that these people will be in the depths of Hell and they will stay there forever (4:145).

The second type is hypocrisy in actions, which means that a person is actually Muslim but they do some evil things. For example, the Prophet (ﷺ) said that the hypocrites have 4 qualities: 1) When they speak they lie, 2) When they make a promise they break it, 3) When they are trusted with something they betray that trust, 4) When they disagree they act wickedly. {Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim} As for this group, it's up to Allah to either forgive or punish them. If they end up in Hell, they will be punished for their sins but will eventually go to Jannah. No Muslim will stay in Hell forever.

THE HYPOCRITES & JUDGMENT

46We have already sent down clear rev-elations, but 'only' Allah guides who-ever He wants to the Straight Path. 47Those hypocrites' say, "We believe in Allah and the Messenger, and we obey." Then a group of them turns away soon after that. These are not "true' believers. 48And as soon as they are called to Al-lah and His Messenger so he may judge between them, a group of them refuses to show up.¹³ 49But if the judgment is going to be in their favour, they 'quickly' come to him, fully submitting. 50Is there a sickness in their hearts? Or are they in doubt? Or do they fear that Allah and His Messenger will be unjust to them? In fact, they are the ones who are truly' do-ing wrong

Verse 48: Because they know they are at fault.

THE BELIEVERS & JUDGMENT

51The only response of the 'true' believ-ers, when they are called to Allah and His Messenger so he may judge between them, is to say, "We hear and obey." They will 'truly' be successful. 52Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger and fears Allah and keeps Him in mind, they will 'truly' be the winners.

HYPOCRITES' SWEET-TALKING

53They swear very strongly by Allah that if you ˹O Prophet˺ ordered them, they would definitely march ˹in Allah’s cause˺. Say, “You do not have to swear; your obe-dience is well known!” Surely Allah is fully Aware of what you do. 54Say, “Obey Allah and obey the Messenger. But if you turn away, then he is only responsible for his duty¹⁴ and you are responsible for yours.¹⁵ And if you obey him, you will be 'rightly' guided. The Messenger’s duty is only to deliver 'the message' clearly.”

Verse 53: Their only duty is to obey the Prophet by submitting to Allah.

Verse 54: The Prophet’s only duty is to deliver the message.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

The Muslim community was always under threat from different enemies, from inside and outside Madinah. Some of the Prophet's companions asked him if they were going to continue living in fear. The Prophet (ﷺ) told them that soon they would live in peace and gain control of huge parts of the world. Within a few years, all of Arabia came under the authority of the Prophet (ﷺ).

Not long after his death, a small Muslim army was able to defeat the world's 2 superpowers (the Roman and Persian empires) at the same time. Muslim rule spread over large parts of Asia, Africa, and Europe—from China in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west, including all of North Africa and some parts of Europe like Turkey and Spain. {Imam Ibn Kathir}

ALLAH'S PROMISE TO THE FAITHFUL

55Allah has promised those of you who believe and do good that He will definite-ly put them in charge of the land, as He did with those "faithful" before them; and will establish for them their faith which He has chosen for them; and will change their fear into security-as long as they worship Me, making nothing equal to Me. But whoever disbelieves after this promise, they will truly be the corrupt. 56Also, pray salah, pay zakah, and obey the Messenger, so you will be shown mercy. 57Do not think O Prophet' that the disbelievers can escape 'Allah' on earth. The Fire will be their home. What atruly evil destination!

PERMISSION TO COME IN

58O believers! Let your slaves and young children ask for your permission to come in' at three times: before Fajr şalah, when you take off your outer clothes at noon, and after 'lsha salah. These are three private times for you. But outside these times, there is no blame on you or them to move around each other freely. This is how Allah makes the revelations clear to you. Allah has perfect knowledge and wisdom. 59When your children ma-ture, they should ask for permission to come in', just like adults do. Again, this is how Allah makes His revelations clear to you. Allah has perfect knowledge and wisdom.

MODESTY FOR OLD WOMEN

60As for elderly women past the age of marriage, there is no blanme on them if they take off their outer clothes, without revealing their 'hidden' beauty. But it is better for them if they avoid this al-together. Allah hears and knows 'every-thing.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

Verse 61 says that it's okay for the blind, disabled, and the sick to not march out with the Muslim army.

Also, some Muslims used to give the keys of their homes to one of those who could not join the army (such as the blind, the disabled, or the sick) or their own relatives and asked them to enter their houses and eat at any time, but these people were shy to do so. {Imam Ibn Kathir}

RESTRICTIONS WAIVED

61There is no blame on those who are blind, disabled, or sick. The same is also true for you if you eat from your homes,¹⁶ or the homes of your fathers, or your mothers, or your brothers, or your sisters, or your uncles or your aunts on your fathers' and mothers' side, or from the homes in your care, or the homes of your friends. There is no blame on you eating together or separately. However, when you enter any home, greet each other with a good and blessed greeting 'of peace' from Allah. This is how Allah makes His revelations clear to you, so perhaps you will understand.

Verse 61: i.e., the home of one's husband/wife or children.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

The following passage came down to correct some of the unacceptable practices of some companions, especially when dealing with the Prophet (ﷺ). While the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions were digging the Trench to protect Madinah against the Enemy Forces, some hypocrites used to sneak away without the Prophet's permission. Some of them would sneak out of the masjid while the Prophet (ﷺ) was giving the khutbah (talk) on Friday. They would hide behind other companions then slip away when they got the chance. When the Prophet (ﷺ) called for a public meeting, they wouldn't take the invitation seriously. Some of them used to call the Prophet by his name, saying 'O Muhammad!'

Verses 62-63 were revealed, instructing the believers to stick with the Prophet (ﷺ) when he is taking care of a public matter, to stay during the khutbah, to take his invitations seriously, and to show respect when they talk to him. Allah Himself never says, 'O Muhammad' in the Quran. Instead, He always says, 'O Prophet' or 'O Messenger.' {Imam Ibn Kathir & Imam Al-Baghawi}

STICKING WITH THE PROPHET

62The 'true' believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, and when they are with him discussing a publíc matter, they do not leave without his permission. Those who ask your permission O Prophet' are the ones who truly believe in Allah and His Messenger. So when they ask your permission to take care of something, give permission to whoever you want and ask Allah's forgiveness for them. Surely Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. 63Do not treat the Messenger's invitation to you 'as lightly' as your invitations to each other. Allah knows very well those of you who sneak out, hiding behind others. The ones who disobey his orders should be careful or they will be hit with a disaster or a pain-ful punishment.

ALLAH KNOWS EVERYTHING

64In fact, everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah. He real-ly knows what you stand for. And on the Day everyone will be returned to Him, He will make them realize what they did. Al-lah has 'perfect' knowledge of all things.
