LEARNING POINTS

LEARNING POINTS

The faithful will be successful, while the unfaithful will be doomed to fail.

Allah is the only True God that deserves our worship.

Allah has blessed us with so many things that we should be grateful for.

Allah is the Master Creator who has the power to bring everyone back to life for judgment.

Allah always supports His prophets.

The Makkans have no excuse for rejecting the Quran and no proof for worshipping idols.

We should always seek the protection of Allah against evil.

The wicked will beg for a second chance on Judgment Day, but it will be too late.

THE TRUE BELIEVERS

1Indeed, the believers will succeed: 2those who humble themselves in salah; 3those who avoid evil talks; 4those who pay zakah; 5and those who satisfy their desires 6Only with their wives or those they have legallythey are then free from blame, 7but those who go be-yond that are really crossing the line. 8'The believers are also' those who honour their trusts and promises; 9and those who always keep up their salah. 10Such people are the winners 11Who will be awarded Paradise as their own. They will be there forever.

THE CREATION OF HUMANS

12And surely, We created the first man! from an extract of clay, 13then put each person' as a human seed in a secure place 'in the womb, 14then We devel-oped that seed into a tiny thing hanging 'inside', then developed that tiny thing into a lump 'of flesh', then developed a skeleton out of that lump, then clothed those bones with flesh, then We brought it into being as a new creation.2 So Bless-ed is Allah, the Best of Creators. 15Then 1 in the end, you will certainly die, 16then on Judgment Day you will be raised back to life.

Verse 14: This happens when the spirit is breathed into the baby inside his or her mothe.

ALLAH'S POWER

17And surely, We created above you seven levels 'of heaven'. We are never unaware of 'Our' creation. 18We send down rain from the sky in perfect mea-sure, causing it to soak into the earth. And We are definitely able to take it away. 19With this 'rain' We produce for you gardens of date trees and grapes with lots of fruits from which you can eat, 20as well as 'olive' trees which grow at Mount Sinai, providing oil and a dip to eat. 21And there is certainly a lesson for you in cattle, from their bellies We give you 'pure milk' to drink, and in them are many other benefits for you, and from them you may eat. 22And you are carried upon 'some of' them and upon ships.

PROPHET NUH

23Surely, We sent Nuh to his people. He declared, 'O my people! Worship Allah 'alone'. You have no god other than Him. Will you not then keep Him in mind?' 24But the disbelieving chiefs of his peo-ple said 'to the public', 'This is just a hu-man like you, who wants to make himself superior to all of you. If Allah wanted, He could have easily sent down angels in-stead. We have never heard of this in 'the history of our fathers. 25He is simply in-sane, so bear with him fora bit'3

Verse 25: They meant 'until he recovers or dies.

THE FLOOD

26Nuh prayed, 'My Lord! Help me be-cause they have rejected me.' 27So We Inspired him: 'Build the Ark under Our 'caring' Eyes and directions. Then when Our command comes and the oven bursts with water' take on board a pair from every species along with your family-except those who deserve to be doomed. And do not argue with Me for those who have done wrong; they are going to be drowned.' 28Then when you and those with you have settled in the Ark, say, 'All praise is for Allah, Who saved us from those who did wrong' 29And pray, 'My Lord! Bless me with a good landing; You are the best host.' 30Surely in this are lessons. We always put 'people' to the test.

Verse 27: Nuh was given a signal that once the water gushed out of a particular oven then the Flood was about to begin.

PROPHET HUD

31Then We raised another generation af-ter them, 32and sent to them a messen-ger from among themselves, 'declaring,' 'Worship Allah 'alone'. You have no god other than Him. Will you not then keep Him in mind?' 33But the chiefs of his people-who disbelieved, denied meet-ing 'Allah in' the Next Life, and were spoiled by the luxury We gave them this life--said 'to the public', 'This is just a human like you. He eats what you eat, and drinks what you drink.' 34And if you obey a human like yourselves, you would certainly be losers. 35What! Does he promise you that when you are dead and turned into dust and bones, you will be brought out 'alive'? 36Impossible! What you are promised is simply impossible! 37There is nothing after this life. We die, others are born, and none will come back to life. 38He is just a man who has made up a lie about Allah, and we will never believe in him.'

Verse 38: Some scholars say that this passage is about Prophet Salih.

THE BLAST

39The messenger prayed, 'My Lord! Help me, because they have rejected me' 40Allah responded, 'Soon they will regret it.' 41Then the 'mighty' blast hit them with justice, and We turned them into ashes. So away with those who did wrong!

MORE PROPHETS

42Then We raised other generations af-ter them. 43No people can speed up or delay their doom. 44Then We sent Our messengers one after another. Wheney-er a messenger came to his people, they rejected him. So We destroyed them, one after the other, and made them an exam-ple. So away with those who refuse to believe!

PROPHET MUSA & PROPHET HARUN

45Then We sent Musa and his brother Harun with Our signs and clear proof 46to Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they acted arrogantly and were too proud. 47They argued, 'How can we believe in two humans like ourselves, especially when their people are like slaves to us?' 48They rejected them both, so they were among those destroyed. 49And We cer-tainly gave Musa the Book, so perhaps his people would berightly' guided.

PROPHET 'ISA & HIS MOTHER

50And We made the son of Maryam and his mother a sign, and gave them shelter on high ground-a suitable place for rest with flowing water

ONE WAY

51O messengers! Eat pure things and do good. I fully know what you do. 52Surely, this religion of yours is only one, and I am your Lord, so keep Me in mind. 53Yet the people have divided it into different groups, each one being happy with what they have. 54So leave them 'O Prophet' in their ignorance for a while. 55Do they think-just because We keep giving them wealth and children- 56that We are in a rush to honour them with good things? Not really! They have no idea.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

According to verses 57-61, the true believers keep a good relationship with Allah, always trying to do better. 'Aishah (R.A.), the Prophet's wife, asked him if verse 60 refers to those who steal or drink (alcohol).

The Prophet (ﷺ) answered, "No, it refers to those who pray, fast, and donate but are afraid that their deeds are rejected because they are not good enough." Then he recited the last part of the verse: "They race to do good deeds, always taking the lead!" {Imam At-Tirmidhi}

SIDE STORY

SIDE STORY

An old house-builder wanted to retire, so he told his boss that he was going to leave the company and live a more relaxed life. His boss said that he would hate to see him leave and asked him to build one more house as a favour to the company. The builder agreed to the plan. Even though he had always built great houses, he did a bad job with the last one. He used cheap material and didn't pay much attention to the details. When the job was done, the boss handed over the key to the builder and said, "Please accept this house as your retirement gift." The builder was in shock! He didn't know that this was going to be his house. If he had known, he would have done a better job.

The lesson here is that we should learn from the example of the true believers mentioned in verses 57-61. When they do good deeds, they feel those deeds are not good enough and they should do better next time. What matters to Allah is not how we start in life, but how we finish.

Illustration

THE TRUE BELIEVERS

57Surely those who are in awe of their Lord, 58and who believe in the revela-tions of their Lord, 59and who make none equal to their Lord, 60and who do whatever 'good' they do with their hearts worried, 'knowing' that they will return to their Lord- 61they race to do good deeds, always taking the lead. 62We never task any soul except with Wnat it can do. And We have a book 'of deeds' that tells the truth. None will be treated unfairly.

THE DISBELIEVERS

63But the hearts ofthose 'who disbelieve' are careless about all of this and on top of that, they do other 'evil' things. 64But as soon as We hit their spoiled elite with punishment, they start crying for help. 65'They will be told,' 'Do not cry for help today; you will never be saved from Us. 66My revelations were always recited to you, but you used to back away 'in dis-gust, 67bragging about it and mumbling nonsense all night.

Verse 63: This refers to the good deeds mentioned in the previous pas-sage.

WHY DID THEY REJECT THE QURAN?

68Is it because they have never thought deeply about this message? Or 'is it be-cause' they have received something that their fathers did not receive? 69Or 'is it because' they failed to recognize their Messenger, so they rejected him? 70Or is it because' they claim, 'He is insane?' In fact, he has come to them with the truth, but most of them are totally against the truth. 71If the truth had followed their desires, the heavens, the earth, and ev-eryone in them would have truly been corrupted. In fact, We have brought them a source of great honour but they just keep turning away from it. 72Or 'is it be-cause' you 0 Prophet' are asking them for a fee 'for this message'? But the re-ward of your Lord is far better; He is the Best Provider. 73And you are definitely calling them to the Straight Path, 74but those who reject the Next Life are truly straying from that Path.

Verse 71: Their desire that the universe has more than one God. See 21:22.

Verse 72: The Prophet did not ask anyone for a fee for delivering the message.

Verse 73: Meaning the Quran.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

For years, the idol-worshippers rejected Islam and abused the early Muslims in Makkah, so the Prophet (ﷺ) prayed against them. Then, there was no rain for a long time and the people of Makkah began to starve. Some of them were forced to eat dogs and dead animals. Things became even worse for the Makkans when Thumamah ibn Uthal (the chief of Banu Hanifah) accepted Islam and cut off their food supplies.

Finally, the Makkans begged the Prophet (ﷺ) to have mercy on them and ask Thumamah (R.A.) to continue their supplies. Their request was answered. Verses 75-77 tell the idol-worshippers that as soon as Allah makes things easy for them, they are going to do wrong again. {Imam Al-Qurtubi}

THOSE WHO KEEP DENYING

75Even if We had mercy on them and re-moved their suffering, they would still keep doing evil, wandering blindly. 76We have already put them through difficul-ties, but they never humbled themselves to their Lord or begged Him for mercy. 77But as soon as We open for them a gate of severe punishment, they will lose all hope.

UNGRATEFUL HUMANS

78He is the One Who created for you hearing, sight, and minds. Yet you hard-ly give any thanks. 79And He is the One Who has spread you throughout the earth, and to Him you will all be gathered 'for judgment'. 80And He is the One Who gives life and causes death, and controls the rotation of the day and night. Will you not then understand? 81But they just repeat what those before them said. 82They said, 'What! When we are dead and turned into dust and bones, will we really be raised back to life? 83We have already been promised this, like our fa-thers in the past. This is just a bunch of fairy tales!'

ALLAH'S POWER

84Ask 'them, O Prophet, 'Who owns the earth and everyone on it, if you really know?' 85They will reply, 'Allah!' Say, 'Will you not then learn any lesson?' 86Ask 'them', 'Who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the Mighty Throne?' 87They will reply, 'AI-lah.' Say, 'Will you not then keep Him in mind?' 88Ask 'them', 'Who has author-ity in His Hands over everything, pro-tecting all, but none can protect against Him, if you really know?' 89They will re-nly, 'Allah.' Say, 'How can you then be so deceived?' 90In fact, We have brought them the truth, and they are truly liars. 91Allah has never had any children, and there are no other gods besides Him, otherwise, each god would have taken away what he created, and they would have tried to dominate each other. Allah is praised high above what they claim. 92'He is the' Knower of the seen and unseen. And He is honoured far above whatever 'false gods' they make equal to Him.

ADVICE TO THE PROPHET

93Say, 'O Prophet,' 'My Lord! If You are going to show me the punishment those idol-worshippers' are threatened with,' 94then, my Lord, do not count me among those doing wrong.' 95We really have the power to show you what We warned them of. 96Respond to evil with what is best. We know very well what they claim. 97And say, 'My Lord! I seek pro-I tection in You : against the whispers of the devils. 98And I seek protection in You, my Lord, that they even Come near me'

TOO LATE FOR THE WICKED

99When death comes to any of them, they cry, 'My Lord! Let me go back,' 100SO I can make up for what I missed!' Never! It is just a useless request they make. But they will be sealed off 'from this world' until the Day they are raised back to life.11 101Then, when the Horn will be blown,12 there will be no family ties between them on that Day, and they will not even care to ask about each other13 102As for those whose scales are heavy 'with good deeds', they will really be suc-cessful. 103But as for those whose scales are light, such people have doomed themselves, staying in Hell forever. 104The Fire will burn their faces, leaving them deformed. 105'They will be told,' 'Were My revelations not recited to you, but you used to reject them?' 106They will cry, 'Our Lord! Our bad luck took hold of us, so we lost the way. 107Our Lord! Take us out of here. Then if we ever do that again, we will definitely be so wrong. 108Allah will respond, 'Be dis-graced in there, and do not ever talk to Me again!' 109There was once a group of My servants who used to pray, 'Our Lord! We have believed, so forgive us and have mercy on us; You are the best of those who show mercy. 110But you were so busy making fun of them that you forgot all about Me. And you kept on laughing at them. 111Today I have rewarded them for their patience: they are truly the win-ners 112He will ask them, 'How many years did you stay on earth?' 113They will reply, 'We stayed 'only' a day or part of a day.14 But ask those who kept count:.' 114He will say, 'You just stayed for a little while, if you had only known. 115Did you really think that We had created you just for fun, and that you would never be re-turned to Us?'

Verse 99: Everyone will be busy with their own judgment.

Verse 100: Meaning once they are dead, there is no coming back to this world.

Verse 101: On Judgment Day, the Horn will be blown by an angel, causing all to die, When it is blown a second time, everyone will be raised from the dead for judgment (see 39:68).

Verse 113: Compared to the length and suffering in the grave and in Hell, their life in this world will seem very short.

ONE GOD ONLY

116Allah, the True King, is highly honoured! There is no god that deserves worship" except Him, the Lord of the Honourable Throne. 117Whoever calls any other god besides Allah-a practice for which they have no proof--then they will find their penalty with their Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will never suc-ceed. 118Say, "O Prophet, 'My Lord! For-give and have mercy. You are the best of those who show mercy.
