LEARNING POINTS
Allah revealed the Quran for the guidance of humanity.
Those who turn away from the Quran are warned of a miserable life.
We can learn many lessons from the stories of Musa (A.S.) and Adam (A.S.).
Both Pharaoh and Iblis are doomed for their arrogance.
Allah can guide the worst enemies, such as Pharaoh's magicians.
The Samiri (one of the followers of Musa (A.S.)) strayed even though he had so much knowledge.
The faithful always win in the end, while the wicked are put to shame.
The believers will be honoured in Paradise, and the disbelievers will suffer in Hell.
The Prophet (ﷺ) is advised to find comfort in patience and prayer.

SIDE STORY
One day, Hamza (R.A.) (the Prophet's uncle) accepted Islam and humiliated Abu Jahl after Hamza heard him insulting the Prophet (ﷺ). 'Omar ibn Al-Khattab (R.A.) (the nephew of Abu Jahl) became extremely angry when he heard of what happened to his own uncle and decided to take revenge by killing the Prophet (ﷺ). On his way to find the Prophet (ﷺ), 'Omar (R.A.) came across a man who had secretly accepted Islam. The man asked 'Omar (R.A.) where he was going with his sword. He told him that he was going to kill Muhammad (ﷺ). To distract 'Omar (R.A.) from his evil plan, the man said, "Why don't you first go and deal with your sister Fatimah and her husband Sa'id, who have both accepted Islam?" 'Omar (R.A.) was in shock, so he decided to go to his sister's house instead.
Fatimah and Sa'id were at home, studying the Quran secretly with a companion named Khabbab (R.A.). When 'Omar (R.A.) heard the recitation, he started banging on the door and Khabbab (R.A.) immediately hid in a room. When they opened the door, 'Omar (R.A.) shouted at them, "How dare you accept Islam?" When they bravely told him they had, in fact, become Muslim, he attacked them. But 'Omar (R.A.) quickly regretted his actions when he saw his sister's face bleeding.
He asked for the sheet they were reading from, and his sister told him to purify himself first. After he did, she gave him the sheet, which had the beginning of Surah Ta-Ha. 'Omar (R.A.) was very impressed by these powerful verses and decided to go to the Prophet (ﷺ) to accept Islam. {Imam At-Tabarani & Imam Ibn Ishaq}

MUSA CHOSEN AS A PROPHET
9Has the story of Musa reached you '0 Prophet? 10When he sawa fire, he said to his family, 'Wait here; I have spotteda fire. Perhaps I can bring you a torch from it, or find some guidance at the fire' 11But when he came to it, he was called, '0 Musa!' 12I am your Lord! So take off your sandals; you are in the holy valley of Tuwa. 13I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed: 14I am Allah! There is no god that deserves worship' except Me. So worship Me 'alone', and pray salah to remember Me. 15The Hour 'of Judgment' is sure to come. My plan is to keep it hidden, so that every soul will be paid back for what it has done. 16So do not let those who deny it and follow their desires distract you from it, or you will be doomed!'
Verse 10: Musa and his family lost their way in the dark while they were travelling from Madian to Egypt, so he wanted to ask for directions.

WORDS OF WISDOM
There is something interesting about 20:17-18. When Allah asked Musa (A.S.) about the object in his hand, he could have simply said, "A staff." But Musa (A.S.) volunteered to add some details that Allah didn't ask about (for example, who the staff belonged to and what it was used for). He even said that he used it for other things, hoping that Allah would ask him what those uses were. Also, in 5:114, when Isa (A.S.) prayed to Allah to send down a table full of food for his companions, he used a similar style. The reason is that both prophets wanted to talk to Allah as much as they could.
When we pray, we shouldn't rush salah by praying faster than the speed of light. Instead, we should take our time, keeping in mind that we are also having a dialogue with Allah. But if you pray fast, it becomes a monologue, not a dialogue. The Prophet (ﷺ) said that when we read Surah Al-Fatihah, Allah responds to every verse we recite. {Imam Muslim}
TWO SIGNS FOR MUSA
17Allah added, 'And what is that in your right hand, 0 Musa?' 18He replied, 'It is my staff! I lean on it, and with itI beat down 'branches' for my sheep, and have other uses for it.' 19Allah said, 'Throw it down, 0 Musa!' 20So he did, then-be-hold!it became a serpent, slithering. 21Allah said, 'Take it, and do not be afraid. We will turn it back to the way it was before.' 22And put your hand under your armpit, it will come out 'glowing' white, not because of a disease,' as an-other sign, 23just to show you some of Our greatest signs. 24Go to Pharaoh-he has truly gone too far in evil.'
Verse 22: Musa was dark-skinned. He was asked to put his hand under his armpit. When he took it out, it was glowing white, but not because of a skin condition.
MUSA PRAYS FOR HELP
25Musa prayed, 'My Lord! Lift up my heart for me,' 26and make my task easy, 27and untie my tongue 28so people can understand my speech,' 29and give me a helper from my family, 30Harun, my brother. 31Support me through him, 32and let him share my task, 33so that we may praise You much 34and remember You much; 35You have alvways watched over us.' 36Allah responded, 'Your prayer has been answered, 0 Musa!'
Verse 28: According to some scholars, when Musa was a child, he put a hot coal in his mouth, which affected his ability to speak as he grew up. In this verse, he prays to Allah to help him speak clearly, and his prayer is answered.

ALLAH'S FAVOURS TO YOUNG MUSA
37We had already done you a favour be-fore, 38when We inspired your mother with this: 39Put him into a basket, then nut it into the river. The river will wash it ashore, and he will be taken by Pha-raoh,' an enemy of Mine and his: And I made you a likable person 0 Musa' so that you could be brought up under My caring' Eye. 40'Remember' when your sister came along and suggested, 'Shall I direct you to someone who will nurse him?'5 So We reunited you with your mother so that her heart would be put at ease, and she would not be sad. 'Lat-er' you killed a man 'by mistake', but We saved you from stress, as well as oth-er tests We put you through. Then you stayed for a number of years among the people of Madian. Then you came here as planned, O Musa! 41And I have selected you for My service.
ORDERS TO MUSA AND HARUN
42'Go, you and your brother, with My Signs and never fall short in remember-ing Me.' 43'Go, both of you, to Pharaoh; he has truly crossed all lines.' 44'Speak to him gently, so perhaps he will keep Me in mind or fear 'My punishment'' 45They both said, 'Our Lord! We are Worried that he will lash out against us Or get out of control.' 46Allah replied, 'Do not worry! I am with you, hearing and seeing 'everything' .' 47'So go to him and say, We are both messengers from your Lord, so let the Children of Isra'il go with us, and stop abusing them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord. Peace will only be for those who follow the 'right' guidance. 48'It has definitely been revealed to us that the punishment will fall upon those who deny 'the truth and turn away.'
PHARAOH'S ARROGANCE
49Pharaoh asked, 'Who then is the Lord of you two, 0 Musa?' 50He answered, 'Our Lord is the One Who has given ev-erything its 'unique' form, then guided it' 51Pharaoh argued, 'And what about all earlier peoples?' 52He replied, 'That knowledge is with my Lord ina Book. My Lord does not miss or forget 'anything'' 53'He is the One' Who has laid out the earth for 'all of you, and set in it path-ways for you. He sends down rain from the sky, causing different types of plants to grow. 54So eat and feed your cattle. Surely in this are signs for those who have sense. 55From the earth We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it We will bring you back again.
THE CHALLEHGE
56We already showed Pharaoh all of Our signs, but he rejected t them and refused 'to believe', 57He argued, 'Have you come to drive us out of our rland with your magic, 0 Musa?' 58We can easily chal-lenge you with similar magic. So set for both of us an appointment that th neither of us will fail to keep, in a central place' 59Musa replied, 'Your appointment is on the Day of the Festival, and let the people be gathered when the sun is high.'
MUSA'S WARNING
60Pharaoh then turned away, put his plan together, then came back. 61Musa warned the magicians, 'You are doomed! Do not make up a lie against Allah, or He will wipe you out with a punishment. Whoever makes up lies will definitely fail' 62So the magicians argued about it among themselves, talking privately. 63They said, 'These two are just magi-cians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic, and do away with your great way of life.' 64So put t your plan together, then Come forward in 'perfect' lines. Whoever wins today will truly be Successful'
Verse 61: By saying that Musa's miracle e is just magic.

MUSA WINS,
65They said, '0 Musa! Either you or let us be the first to throw.' 66Musa replied, 'No, you go first.' And sudden-ly their ropes and staffs appeared to him to be slithering by their magic. 67So Musa felt afraid deep down. 68We said, 'Do not be afraid! You will win for sure.' 69Throw what is in your right hand, and it will swallow up what they have made-it is just a magic trick. And magicians can never succeed wherever they go.”
MAGICIANS BECOME BELIEVERS
70So the magicians s fell on their knees, de-claring, 'We believe e in the Lord of Harun and Musa.' 71Pharaoh threatened, 'How dare you believe e i in him before I give you permission? He He must be your master who taught you magic. I will definitely cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and crucify you on the trunks of date trees. You will really see whose pun-ishment is more painful and permanent.' 72They responded, 'By the One Who cre-ated us! We will never prefer you over the clear proofs that have come to us. So do whatever you want! Your authority only covers the 'short' life of this world. 73We have truly believed in our Lord so He may forgive our sins and that magic you have forced us to practice. And Allah is far greater 'in reward and more last-1 ing 'in punishment'
FAIR JUDGMENT
74Those who come to their Lord as wick-ed sinners will certainly have Jahannam, where they will not 'be able to' live or die. 75But those who come to Him as be-lievers, having done good, they will have the highest ranks: 76the Gardens of Eter-nity, under which rivers flow, where they will stay forever. That is the reward of those who purify themselves.

PHARAOH'S DOOM
77And We surely inspired Musa, 'saying,' 'Leave with My servants 'at night' and strike a dry path for them across the sea. Do not be afraid of being caught or worried 'about drowning'' 78Then Pharaoh chased them with his soldiers-but how horrible were the waters that covered them! 79And so Pharaoh caused his peo-ple to stray, and did not guide 'them to the right way'.

ALLAH'S FAVOURS
80O Children of Isra'il! We saved you from your enemy, and made an appoint-ment for you' on the right side of Mount Tur, and sent down to you manna and quails, 81'saying' 'Eat from the good things We have provided for you, but do not take them for granted, or I will be angry with you. And whoever suffers My anger is truly doomed. 82But I am cer-tainly Forgiving to whoever repents, be-lieves, does good, then stays guided.!

BACKGROUND STORY
The Samiri was a hypocrite who led the Children of Isra'il into calf-worship. According to many scholars, while Musa (A.S.) and the Children of Isra'il were crossing the sea to escape the abuse of Pharaoh and his people, the Samiri saw the angel Jibril (A.S.) on a horse leading the way. Every time the horse touched the ground, it came to life by turning green. So the Samiri took a handful of sand from the hoof-prints of the horse.
When Musa (A.S.) went for the appointment with Allah, his people melted the jewellery they had borrowed from their Egyptian neighbours before they left Egypt. Then the Samiri moulded an idol from the melted jewellery and threw that handful of sand on it, and it started to sound like a real calf. {Imam Ibn Kathir & Imam Al-Qurtubi}

SIDE STORY
This is a true story of an Egyptian lady who was a Quran teacher. She made a pledge to Allah to always live by verse 84 of this surah, which says, "I have rushed to You, my Lord, so You be pleased." This pledge meant that she would pray salah as soon as she heard the adhan (call to prayer) without delay. Even when the alarm went off at Fajr (when Shaytan whispers, "You are tired. Just get some more sleep then pray later."), she would read this verse and jump out of her bed for salah.
One day, her husband called and said he wanted to eat mahshi (grape leaf rolls stuffed with rice) after work. So she started to stuff the grape leaves and place them in a pot. A few leaves were left when the adhan went off. So she left the kitchen and went to pray in the living room. Later, her husband came home hungry from work and found the uncooked mahshi on the counter. He got very angry and said, "SubhanAllah! You could have just taken a few more minutes to finish the last few leaves, put the pot on the stove, then go for salah." But he didn't get a response. It turned out that his wife had died in sajdah.
She could have died in the kitchen, but Allah planned for her to die in salah. According to a hadith from the Prophet (ﷺ), a person will be raised on Judgment Day in the same state they died. This lady will be raised in a state of sajdah, which is a great honour.
THE GOLDEN CALF
83'Allah asked,' 'Why have you come rushing ahead of your people, 0 Musa?' 84He reeplied, 'They are close behind me. And I have rushed to You, my Lord, so I You will be pleased.' 85Allah responded. 'n fact, We have tested your people in your absence, and the Samiri has caused them to stray.' 86So Musa returned to his people, extremely angry and disappoint-ed. He said, 'O my people! Did your Lord not make you a good promise?10 Has my absence been too long for you? Or did you just want your Lord to be angry with you, so you broke your promise to me?' 87They argued, 'We did not break our promise to you of our own free will, but we had to carry the burden of the peo-ple's 'golden' jewellery, then we threw it 'into the fire to melt', and so did the Samiri' 88Then he moulded for them an idol that looked and sounded like a calf. They said, 'This is your god and the god of Musa, but he forgot!' 89Did they not realize that it did not respond to them, and it could not protect or benefit them?
Verse 83: Musa selected a delegation of 70 people from his commu-nity to go to Mount Tur to receive the Tablets. On the way, he rushed for the appointment so he arrived ahead of his delegation.
Verse 85: Theirpromiseto worship Allah alone until Musa a returned to them with the Tablets.
Verse 86: To reveal the Tawrah for their guidance.
Verse 87: The jewellery they had borrowed from their Egyptian neigh-bours before they left Egypt.
HARUN'S ATTITUDE
90Harun had already warned them in advance, 'my people! You are just be-ing tested by this. Your 'only true' Lord is the Most Kind, So follow me and obey my orders.' 91They replied, 'We will keep worshipping it until Musa returns to us.' 92Musa scolded his brother', '0 Harun! When you saw them losing their way, what prevented you' 93'from coming after me? How could you disobey my orders?' 94Harun replied, 'O son of my mother! Do not grab me by my beard or the hair of my head. I really feared that you would say, 'You have divided the Children of Isra'il, and did not follow what I said.'
PUNISHMENT OF THE SAMIRI
95Musa then asked, 'What did you think you were doing,0 Samiri?' 96He said, 'I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful 'of dust' from the hoof-prints of 'the horse of the messenger-angel' Jibril' then threw it 'on the moulded calf. This is what I got myself into.' 97Musa said, 'Go away then! And for 'the rest of your life you will be crying, 'Do not touch 'me'!'14 And you will have a 'horrible' fate that you cannot escape. Now look at your god that you kept worshipping-we will burn it up, then blow it away in the sea.' 98'Then Musa told his people,' 'Your only god is Allah, there is no god 'that deserves worship' except Him. He has full knowledge of everything'
Verse 97: Meaning he will be left alone to wander in the desert, away from the people.
THE DENIERS OF THE QURAN
99In this way, We tell you 'o Prophet Some of the stories of the past. And We have certainly given you a Reminderis from Us. 100Whoever turns away from it will carry the burden 'of sin' on Judg-ment Day, 101Suffering its consequences forever. What an evil burden they will carry on Judgment Day! 102'Watch for' the Day the Horn will be blown, and We will gather the wicked on that Day blue-faced 'from horror and thirst'. 103They will whisper amnong themselves, 'You stayed no more than ten days 'on earth'' 104We know best what they say-the most reasonable of them will say, 'You stayed no more than one day.'
Verse 99: The Quran.

HORRORS OF JUDGMENT DAY
105And 'if they ask you 'O Prophet' about the mountains, then' say, 'My Lord will wipe them out comnpletely,' 106leaving the earth flat and empty, 107with no highs or lows to be seen.' 108On that Day every-one will follow the caller for the gath-ering' 16 none can escape. All voices will be hushed in front of the Most Kind. Only whispers will be heard. 109On that Day, no words of defence will help, except by those given permission by the Most Kind and their words are acceptable to Him. 110He 'fully' knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them,9 but they cannot have full knowledge of Him. 111All faces will be humbled in front of the Living, Who takes care of everything. And those burdened with evil will be in loss. 112But whoever does good and is a believer will have no fear of being wronged or denied 'any reward'.
Verse 108: When the angel Israfil blows the Horn, everyone will come forward for judgment.
Verse 109: He will accept their words of defence because of their true faith in Him.
Verse 110: Allah fully knows what they did in the world and the consequences waiting for them in the Next Life.

BACKGROUND STORY
The Prophet (ﷺ) was eager to memorize new revelations of the Quran. This is why he rushed to recite the verses while they were being revealed to him by the angel Jibril (A.S.). So he was told to take his time to memorize the verses once they were properly delivered to him. {Imam Ibn Kathir}

REVELATION OF THE QURAN
113And so We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran and given all kinds of warnings in it, so perhaps they will avoid evil or learn the lesson. 114Allah, the True King, is highly honoured! Do not rush to recite 'a revelation of the Quran O Prophet' before it is 'properly' revealed to you, and pray, 'My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.'
SATAN VS. ADAM
115And surely, We once made a pledge with Adam, but he forgot, and so We found him unable to hold on to it. 116Remember' when We said to the angels, 'Bow down to Adam' so they all didbut not Iblis, who refused 'arrogantly'. 117So We warned, '0 Adam! This is truly an enemy to you and to your wife. So do not let him drive you both out of Jannah, or you 'Adam' would suffer. 118Here it is guaranteed that you will never go without food or clothes, 119and you will never suffer from thirst or the sun's' heat'.
Verse 115: The pledge to stay away from the forbidden tree and to take care of himself and his wife.
THE FALL
123Allah said, 'Now, get down from here, both of you, 'along with Satan as ene-mies to each other. Then when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will never stray 'in this life or suffer 'in the Next'.' 124But whoever turns away from My Reminder?2 will cer-tainly live a miserable life, then We will raise them up blind on Judgment Day. 125One will cry, 'My Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, even though I used to see?' 126Allah will respond, 'This is because Our revelations came to you and you neglected them, so Today you are ne-glected in Hell'' 127This is how We pay back those who went too far in evil and rejected the revelations of their Lord. The punishment of the Next Life is defi-nitely more painful and permanent.
Verse 124: The Quran.
WARNING TO THE IDOL-WORSHIPPERS
128Is it not yet clear to them how many peoples We destroyed before them, even though they still pass by their ruins? Surely in this are signs for those who have sense. 129If it was not for an earlier decision from your Lord 'O Prophet!' and a time already set, they would have been doomed for sure,
Verse 129: His decision to delay their judgment until the Next Life.
ADVICE TO THE PROPHET
130So be patient O Prophet' with what they say. And praise the glory of your Lord before sunrise and before sunset, and praise Him in the hours of the night and at both ends of the day, so that you will be pleased 'with the reward'. 131Do not let your eyes desire the pleasures We gave some of those 'deniers'-the little luxury of this life that We test them with. But your Lord's resources in the Next Life' are far better and more permanent. 132Order your people to pray, and keep it up yourself. We do not ask you to pro-vide; We provide for you. Only the faith-ful will win in the end.
Verse 130: This verse refers to the times of the five daily prayers.
WARNING TO THE IDOL-WORSHIPPERS
133They demand, 'If only he could bring us a sign from his Lord!' Have they not 'already' received a confirmation of what is in earlier Books? 134If We had destroyed them with a punishment before this 'messenger came', they would have definitely argued on Judgment Day', 'Our Lord! If only You had sent us a messenger, we would have followed Your revelations before being humiliat-ed and put to shame.' 135Say 'to them, 0 Prophet, 'Each of us is waiting, so keep waiting! You will soon see who is on the Straight Path and is 'rightly' guided.'
Verse 133: This probably refers to some verses in the Bible that describe the Prophet and give good news of his coming (such as Deuteronomy 18:15-18 and 33:2, Isaiah 42, and John 14:16).
