SIDE STORY
- •
This is a fictional story of a king who had 3 servants. One day, he asked each of them to go to the store and fill up a cart with food. So, they went to a big shopping centre and each of them took a cart and some bags.
- •
The first one filled up his cart with fruits, vegetables, bread, juice, chocolate, nuts, and water.
- •
The second one ignored the king's orders and said, "I'll just buy all the stuff I want." So, he filled up his cart with clothes, shoes, belts, and toilet paper.
- •
The third one pretended to fill his bags with food, but he left with empty bags.
- •
When they returned to the king, he ordered his guards, "Lock each of them away in a separate room for 2 weeks, and let them eat what they got from the store!"
- •
The first one had no problem because he listened to the king. So, for 2 weeks, he was relaxing on a couch, enjoying all the amazing food he brought from the store.
- •
The second one panicked when they put him in the room. He was left with nothing to eat except the new shoes and toilet paper. So, he ended up dying in a few days.
- •
As for the third one, his fate wasn't much better, because he had nothing in his bags.
- •
This is an example of the 3 types of people living in this world, who are ordered to obey Allah and do good deeds that will benefit them in the Next Life.
- •
The believing servants who obey their Lord—they will take their good deeds with them and will be happy with their rewards.
- •
The disbelieving servants who disobey Allah—the deeds they take with them will not benefit them on Judgment Day.
- •
The hypocrites who pretend to be faithful but disobey Allah in secret—they will also pay a heavy price for their disobedience.
- •
This surah focuses on the qualities of the believers, disbelievers, and hypocrites. It teaches us that those who obey Allah and do good will benefit themselves. As for those who disobey Him and do evil, they only harm themselves.

WORDS OF WISDOM
- •
As mentioned in the Introduction, Makki surahs focus mainly on true belief in Allah as the only Creator and Provider, Who will bring everyone back to life for judgment.
- •
Madani surahs, like Chapter 2, focus on practical rulings related to acts of worship, people's duties towards Allah, and their relationships with each other—including business, marriage, divorce, war, peace, and so on.
The purpose of these surahs is to teach the Muslims how to build strong individuals, families, and societies.
- •
Individuals are taught how to develop a strong relationship with Allah.
- •
Families are introduced to rules that protect marriages and solve their problems.
- •
The new Muslim community in Madinah is instructed to protect themselves against inside and outside threats. The inside threats came from hypocrites, and the outside threats came from some non-Muslim enemies.
- •
To build a strong Muslim community, Madani surahs—especially this one—emphasize 2 important requirements:
- •
Taqwa of Allah, which means to always keep Him in mind (by doing the things that please Him, and staying away from the things that displeas Him). You will notice that the acts of worship mentioned in this surah are combined with reminders to keep Allah in mind.
- •
Obedience to Allah and His Messenger. This surah provides many examples on the importance of obedience and the consequences of disobedience. For example,
- •
Adam was told he could eat from any tree except a particular one, but he forgot and disobeyed Allah.
- •
Iblis was ordered to bow down to Adam, but he refused arrogantly.
- •
The Children of Isra'il were ordered to sacrifice a cow, but they gave Musa a hard time.
- •
They were told to honour the Sabbath (by not fishing on Saturdays), but some of them chose to break it.
- •
They were ordered to enter the gate of the city and say a certain prayer, but they said something totally different.
- •
Later, they were ordered to accept Talut as their new king, but many of them protested.
- •
Talut asked his army to avoid drinking from a river on their way to battle, but most of them didn't listen to him.
- •
This training in taqwa and obedience was very important to prepare the believers for some major commands, including the change of the qiblah (direction of prayer) from Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa (in Jerusalem) to the ka'bah (in Makkah).
The faithful immediately obeyed this order, whereas the hypocrites argued and questioned it.

WORDS OF WISDOM
- •
The Arabic alphabet has 29 letters, 14 of them appear as individual letters or in groups at the beginning of 29 surahs, like Alif-Lam-Mim, Ta-Ha, and Qaf.
Imam Ibn Kathir says in his explanation of 2:1, these 14 letters can be arranged into an Arabic sentence that reads: 'A wise text with authority, full of wonders.' Although Muslim scholars have tried to explain these 14 letters, no one knows their true meaning except Allah.

WORDS OF WISDOM
- •
Someone may ask, "What is the purpose of 'Alif-Lam-Mim' (in verse 1) if no one knows exactly what it means?" In his famous tafsir, Imam Ibn 'Ashur listed 21 different opinions on the meaning of these letters.
The chosen opinion is that these letters came to challenge the idol-worshippers who claimed that the Quran had been made up by the Prophet ﷺ. Even though the Arabs were the masters of the Arabic language, they failed to match the style of the Quran.
Not only did they fail to produce one surah, they also couldn't match one ayah (verse), not even a small one like Alif-Lam-Mim, Ta-Ha, or Qaf.
QUALITIES OF THE BELIEVERS
1Alif-Lam-Mim.
2This is the Book! There is no doubt about it!—a guide for those who keep Allah in mind,
3who believe in the unseen,¹ pray salah, and donate from what We have provided for them,
4and who believe in what has been revealed to you, O Prophet² and what was revealed before you, and have sure faith in the Next Life.³
5They are the ones 'truly' guided by their Lord, and they are the ones who will be successful.
QUALITIES OF THE DISBELIEVERS
6As for those who choose to disbelieve, it is the same whether you warn them or not—they will never believe.
7Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing, and their sight is covered.³ They will suffer a horrible punishment.

WORDS OF WISDOM
- •
The word munafiq 'hypocrite' comes from the root na-fa-qa, which literally means 'for a desert rat to dig a tunnel (nafaq) with two holes, one as an entrance and the other as a hidden exit to avoid being trapped.' A hypocrite is a person with two faces, who pretends to be your
friend but speaks and plots against you behind your back. Makki surahs don't talk about hypocrites because they didn't exist in Makkah. If someone didn't like the early Muslims (when they were few in number), they were not afraid to abuse and mock them in public.
When the Muslim community became strong in Madinah, their enemies didn't dare abuse or mock them openly. They pretended to be part of the Muslim community but worked against Islam and Muslims in secret.
This is why many Madani surahs (like this one) talk about hypocrites, their attitude towards the Muslim community, and their punishment on Judgment Day.

QUALITIES OF THE HYPOCRITES
8And there are some who say, "We be-lieve in Allah and the Last Day," yet they are not 'true' believers.
9They try to deceive Allah and the believers. However, they only deceive themselves, but they do not realize it.
10There is sick-ness in their hearts, and Allah⁴ only lets their sickness increase. They will suf-fer a painful punishment for their lies.
11When they are told, "Do not cause trouble in the land," they argue, "We are just peacemakers!"
12In fact, they are the corruptors, but they do not realize it.
13And when they are told, "Believe as others believe," they argue, "Will we be-lieve as those fools do?" In fact, they are the fools, but they have no clue.
14When they meet the believers they say, "We too believe." But when they are alone with their evil partners, they say, "We are defi-nitely with you; we were only mocking"
15.Allah will throw their mocking back at them, leaving them to continue wander-ing blindly in their wickedness.
16They are the ones who trade guidance for mis-guidance. But this trade is profitless, and they are not 'rightly' guided.
TWO EXAMPLES FOR HYPOCRITES
17They are just like someone who ignites a fire, but when it lights up all around them, Allah takes away their light, leav-ing them in complete darkness, unable to see.
18They choose to be' deaf, mute, and blind, so they will never return 'to the Right Path'.
19Or they are like those caught in' a rainstorm from the sky with darkness, thunder, and lightning. They stick their fingers into their ears to avoid thunder-claps, being so scared of death. And Allah surrounds the disbelievers 'by His power'.
20The lightning almost snatches away their sight-whenever it strikes, they walk in its light, but when darkness covers them, they stand still. If Allah wanted, He could have taken away their hearing and sight. Surely Allah has power over all things
ORDER TO WORSHIP ALLAH ALONE
21O humanity! Worship your Lord, Who created you and those before you, so that you may keep Him in mind.
22He is the One' Who has made the earth as a home for you and the sky as a ceiling, and 'He' sends down rain from the sky, causing fruits to grow as food for you. So do not intentionally set up equals to Allah.
THE QURANIC CHALLENGE
23And if you are in doubt about what We have revealed to Our servant, then make a surah like it and call your helpers other than Allah, if what you say is true.
24But if you are unable to do so-and you will never be able to do so-then fear the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, 'which is' prepared for the disbelievers.
REWARD OF THE BELIEVERS
25Give good news 'O Prophet' to those who believe and do good-that they will have Gardens under which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with fruit, they will say, "This is what we were given before" because they will be served fruit that looks similar "but tastes different' They will have pure wives, and they will be there forever.

SIDE STORY
- •
A fox was challenged to bring some grapes from a tree in the forest. So, he walked up to the tree, but he couldn't reach the delicious grapes because the branches were very high. He kept jumping higher and higher, but he still couldn't reach the grapes.
He got so frustrated that he gave up, found some little lemons on the ground, and took them back instead. Later when he was asked, "Why didn't you bring some grapes?" He started making up excuses, saying, "Those grapes were very sour. So, I got these tasty lemons instead!"

BACKGROUND STORY
- •
The disbelievers were challenged to produce something that matched the style of the Quran (see 2:23), but they failed miserably. Instead, they started making up excuses, saying, 'What kind of revelation is this?
It gives an example of a fly (22:73) and an example of a spider (29:41)!' So, verse 2:26 was revealed to respond to their foolish claim. It doesn't matter whether Allah uses the example of a tiny bug or a huge elephant.
They are not much different to Allah, because He created both with the word 'Be!' (Imam Ibn 'Ashur)
WISDOM BEHIND EXAMPLES
26Surely Allah does not hesitate to use the example of a mosquito or what is even smaller. As for the believers, they know that this is the truth from their Lord. And as for the disbelievers, they argue, "What does Allah mean by such an example?" Through this 'test', He leaves many to stray and guides many. And He leaves none to stray except the troublemakers*.
27those who break Allah's pledge after giving their word, cut whatever 'bonds' Allah has ordered to be kept, and cause trouble throughout the land. They are the 'true' losers.
ALLAH'S CREATION
28How can you deny Allah? You were lifeless and He gave you life, then He will cause you to die and again bring you back to life, and then you will all be returned to Him.
29He is the One Who created everything on earth for you. Then He turned towards the heaven, forming it into seven heavens. And He has 'perfect' knowledge of all things.

BACKGROUND STORY
- •
In verses 30-34, Allah informs the angels that He was going to put the human race in charge of the earth. The angels were concerned about the trouble that some humans would cause, including killing others. Allah responded by telling them that He knew what they didn't know.
Then Allah taught Adam the names of different things (such as tree, river, bird, hand, and so on). By doing this, Allah made Adam very special, because He gave him some knowledge that the angels didn't have. (Imam Ibn Kathir)

WORDS OF WISDOM
- •
Someone may ask, "Why did Allah tell the angels that He was going to create the human race, even though He doesn't need anyone's permission?" According to Imam Ibn 'Ashur, Allah informed the angels because He wanted them to know the importance of Adam and the human race.
Allah also wanted to teach us to discuss matters with others.
- •
Someone may ask, "If the angels obey Allah all the time (21:26-28), how come they questioned His decision to put humans in charge of the earth?" According to Imam Ibn Kathir, the angels didn't question Allah's decision; they just wanted to learn the wisdom behind His decision.
In Islam, there is nothing wrong if someone asks a question to learn and grow in faith, just like Ibrahim did when he wanted to learn how Allah gives life to the dead (2:260).
- •
Someone may ask, "How did the angels know that humans were going to cause trouble on earth?" According to Imam Ibn Kathir, some scholars said that maybe Allah Himself told the angels.
Other scholars said that maybe there had been other creatures on earth (perhaps the jinn) who did horrible things, so the angels assumed that humans would do the same. And Allah knows best.
- •
Someone may ask, "What did Allah mean when He said to the angels in verse 30, 'I know what you do not know.'?" Maybe Allah meant that even though some humans would do bad things, others would do great things.
Think of Muhammad and other prophets and see how much goodness they brought to this world. Think of the sahabah. Think of scholars like Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Al-Bukhari, and many others. Think of Salahuddin, Muhammad Al-Fatih, and 'Omar Al-Mukhtar.
Think of all the good people who pray, give charity, and serve others. Think of all the teachers, doctors, engineers, workers, fathers, and mothers who made the world a better place.
HONOURING ADAM
30'Remember' when your Lord said to the angels, "I am going to put a human authority in charge of the earth." They asked, "Will You put on it a race that will cause trouble there and shed blood while we praise Your glory and declare Your perfection?" Allah responded, "I know what you do not know."
31He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, "Tell Me the names of these things, if what you say is true."
32They replied, "Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Surely You have perfect knowledge and wisdom."
33Allah said, "O Adam! Tell them their names." Then when Adam did, Allah said, "Did I not tell you that I know the secrets of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you show and what you hide?"

According to the Quran, Shaytan was created from fire and Adam was created from clay. Shaytan was a jinn, not an angel (18:50). When Allah created Adam, He made it clear that He was going to put him on earth as an authority.
Since Shaytan worshipped Allah a lot, he was always in the company of the angels dedicated to Allah's worship. When Allah ordered those angels to bow down to Adam, Shaytan was standing with them.
They all bowed down, except for Shaytan, who protested, "I'm better than him—I was created from fire and he was created from clay. Why should I bow down to him?" So, he disobeyed Allah because of his arrogance. (Imam Ibn Kathir)
THE TEST & THE FALL
34And 'remember' when We said to the angels, "Bow down to Adam," so they all did—but not Iblis, who refused and acted arrogantly, becoming unfaithful.
35We warned, "O Adam! Live with your wife in Jannah and eat as freely as you wish, but do not come close to this tree, or else you will be doing wrong."
36But Satan deceived them, leading to their fall from the 'wonderful' condition they were in. And We said, "Get down from here as enemies to one another. You will find on the earth a home and whatever you need for your stay."
37Then Adam was inspired with words 'of prayer' by his Lord. So He accepted his repentance. Surely, He is willing to accept repentance and is full of mercy.
38We said, "Get down from here, all of you! Then when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows it, there will be no fear for them, and they will never be sad. But those who disbelieve and reject Our signs will be the people of the Fire. They will be there forever.
ADVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF MUSA
40O children of Isra'il! Remember My favours upon you. Honour your pledge to Me and I will honour My pledge to you. And fear Me 'alone'.
41Believe in My revelations which confirm your Books. Do not be the first to deny them or trade them for a little gain. And keep Me 'alone' in mind.
42Do not mix truth with falsehood or hide the truth intentionally.
43Pray salah, pay zakah, and bow down with those who bow down.
44Do you tell people to do good and fail to do it yourselves, although you read the Book? Do you not understand?
45And seek help through patience and prayer. This is certainly a burden except for the humble—
46those who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him.
