LEARNING POINTS

LEARNING POINTS

This surah promises the faithful a great reward in Paradise and warns the wicked of a horrible punishment in Hell.

Life is a test. Some people will pass, others will fail.

Allah can easily bring the dead back to life.

To enter Jannah, one needs to have faith in Allah and do good.

It is important to say in-sha-Allah when we plan to do something in the future.

We should be grateful for Allah's blessings.

Allah can easily take away blessings if people fail to give thanks.

We should be serious about gaining knowledge.

The deeds of the unfaithful will be worthless in the Next Life.

The wicked will show regret on Judgment Day but it will be too late.

WORDS OF WISDOM

The Prophet (ﷺ) said in an authentic hadith, "No one's feet will move on Judgment Day until they are asked about 4 things: 1. What they did in their youth. 2. How they earned and spent their wealth. 3. What they did with their knowledge. 4. How they spent their lives." {Imam At-Tirmizi}

It is interesting to know that these 4 questions match the 4 stories mentioned in this surah: 1. The story of the youth in the cave. 2. The story of the wealthy man with two gardens. 3. The story of Musa (A.S.) and the man of knowledge. 4. The story of Zul-Qarnain and his life and travels in the service of Allah.

It's recommended to recite this great surah on Fridays. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on a Friday, a light will shine for them until the next Friday." {Imam Al-Hakim} He also said, "Whoever memorizes the first 10 verses of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the test of Ad-Dajjal (an evil individual who will appear just before Judgment Day)." {Imam Muslim}

WORDS OF WISDOM

You may know that the surahs of the Quran are not arranged in the order that they were revealed. For example, Surah Al-Alaq (which has the first verses ever revealed of the Quran) is not Surah number 1 in the Quran, but Surah number 96. So the Prophet (ﷺ) arranged the surahs as instructed by Allah through the angel Jibril. In this order, all the surahs are well connected, with Surah 1 serving as the introduction to all following surahs.

You can easily see how: • The end of Surah 17 matches the beginning of Surah 18 (praising Allah and confirming that He has no children). • The end of Surah 22 matches the beginning of Surah 23 (praying and worshipping Allah to gain success). • The end of Surah 52 matches the beginning of Surah 53 (fading of the stars). In many cases, the end of a surah matches its own beginning. For example, • The first and last sections of Surah 4 talk about the laws of inheritance. • The beginning of Surah 20 tells us that the Quran was not revealed to stress out the Prophet (ﷺ) and the end of the surah tells us that those who turn their backs on this revelation will live a stressful life. • At the beginning of Surah 23 we are told that the believers will be successful and at the end of the surah we are told that the disbelievers will never succeed.

Also, there are 'twin surahs' that match and complete each other because they cover the same topics. For example, 2 & 3, 8 & 9, 37 & 38, 55 & 56, 105 & 106, and 113 & 114. All this amazing order and structure proves to us that this Quran is from Allah.

MESSAGE OF THE QURAN

1All praise is for Allah Who has revealed the Book to His servant,' allowing no imperfection in it, 2'making it' perfectly upright, to warn 'the disbelievers' of a severe punishment from Him; to give good news to the believers who do good that they will have a great reward, 3where they will stay forever; 4and to Warn those who claim that Allah has children. 5They have no knowledge of this, just like their fathers. What a terri-Die claimn that comes out of their mouths! They say nothing but lies.

Verse 1: Muhammad .

ADVICE TO THE PROPHET

6Now, are you going to stress yourself to death because thev refuse to believe in this message? 7Whatever We put on earth is to make it look good, just to test which of them is best in deeds. 8But in the end, We are going to turn whatever is on it into flat dirt.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

This is the story of a group of Christian youth who hid inside a cave around the year 250 C.E. to escape the abusive idol-worshippers. The youth, along with their dog, slept in the cave for 309 years, according to verse 25. When they finally woke up, some of them thought they slept for a day or less, and others were not too sure. Then they sent one of them to buy food and told him not to attract any attention. However, their old silver coins gave them away.

People, along with their good King, rushed to the cave to greet the youth, who later passed away and were buried in the cave. The King decided to build a place of worship at the cave to honour their memory. Ar-Raqim (mentioned in verse 9) could be a tablet that had the youth's story, or maybe the name of the town, valley, or mountain. It may even be the name of the youth's dog (perhaps a Dalmatian breed). Based on the description given in this surah, many scholars believe that the cave still exists in Jordan.

STORY 1) THE PEOPLE OF THE CAVE

9Do you 'O Prophet' think that the peo-ple of the cave and the tablet 'that had their story' were the only wonders of Our signs? 10'Remember' when those youth took shelter in the cave and said. 'Our Lord! Bless us with Your mercy and find us a good way out of this difficulty.' 11So We caused them to fall into a deep sleep in the cave for many years, 12then We woke them up so We can show which of the two groups would better estimate how long they stayed.'

Verse 12: The People of the Cave themselves disagreed on how long they had slept in the cave. See 18:19.

STANDING UP FOR THE TRUTH

13We tell you 'O Prophet' their story in all truth. They were youth who truly be-lieved in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance. 14And We strength-ened their hearts when they stood up and declared, 'Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We will nev-er call upon any god besides Him, or we would definitely be saying a wicked lie.' 15'Then they said to each other 'These people of ours have taken gods instead of Him. Why do they not bring a clear proof about them? Who then does more Wrong than those who make up lies against Allah? 16Now that you have sep-arated yourselves from them and what they worship besides Allah, take shelter In the cave. Your Lord will extend His mercy to you and take care of you in this difficulty.'

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

As we mentioned in Surah 70, we share in the reward or punishment by being around good or bad friends. Let's say you are sitting in a Quran class with your friends and someone comes in to give prizes to that class. You will get a prize even if you don't know how to read properly. In the same way, if you are sitting with thieves somewhere and, all of a sudden, the police arrive, you will be arrested even if your job is only to make tea. Imam Ibn Kathir said in his explanation of 18:18-22 that Allah honoured the dog by mentioning him 4 times simply for being in the company of the good youth, and Allah shamed some human beings in 28:8 for being in the bad company of Pharaoh.

A scholar by the name of Ibn Al-Qayyim said that there are 4 types of friends: 1. Good friends who guide us to do good and keep us away from evil. We cannot live without them because they are like the air we breathe and the water we drink. 2. Colleagues we study and work with. They are like medicine, which is only used if there is a need. 3. People we hang out with just to pass time, not doing anything good or bad. The more we stay away from them, the more productive our life will be. 4. People who encourage us to do evil and stop us from doing good. They are like poison, and we should avoid them completely.

IN THE CAVE

17And you would have seen the sun, as it rose, turning away from their cave to the right, and as it set, moving away from them to the left, while they lay in its open space. That is one of the signs of Allah. Whoever Allah guides is truly guided. But whoever He leaves to stray, you will find no guide to show them the way. 18And you would have thought they were awake, even though they were asleep. We turned them over, to the right and left, while their dog stretched his front legs at the entrance. If you looked at them, you would have certainly run away from them, filled with horror.

Verse 17: While they slept in the open space of the cave, fresh air blew through the cave, but they were protected fromn the heat of the sun.

Verse 18: This is because, during their long sleep, their eyes were open, their hair grew long, and their bodies rolled over to the right and left to prevent bedsores.

THE YOUTH WAKE UP

19And so We woke them up to question each other. One of them asked, 'How long did you stay 'asleep?'' Some replied, 'Perhaps a day,' or 'Part of a day' They said 'to each other, 'Your Lord knows best how long you have stayed. So send one of you with these silver coins to the city, and let him find good, pure food and bring you some to eat. Let him be very cautious, and do not let him attract any attention to you.' 20If they find out about you, they will certainly stone you 'to death' or force you back into their faith, and then you will never succeed.'

THE HIDEOUT IS FOUND

21And that is how We caused them to be discovered, so their people could know that Allah's promise 'to bring the dead back to life' is true and that there is no doubt about the Hour 'of ]udgment' Lat-er, when the people argued with each other on what to do about the youth 'af-ter their death', some suggested, 'Build a structure around them. Their Lord knows best about them.' Those in charge said, 'We are going to build a place of worship over here.'

HOW MANY WERE THEY?

22Some will say, 'They were three, their dog was the fourth' while others will say, 'They were five, their dog was the sixth,' just guessing blindly. And others will say, 'They were seven and their dog was the eighth.' Say, 'O Prophet, 'My Lord knows best their exact number: Only a few peo-ple know as well.' So do not argue about them except with sure knowledge, or ask any of those 'who argue' about them.

Verse 22: Based on what has been revealed in the Quran.

SAY, "IN-SHA-ALLAH"

23If you intend to do something, do not say, 'I will definitely do this tomorrow' 24without adding, 'In-sha-Allah' But if you forget, then remember your Lord and say, 'I trust my Lord will guide me closer to what is right.'

TIME SPENT IN THE CAVE

25They had stayed in their cave for three hundred years, plus nine.' 26Say, 'O Prophet, 'Allah knows best how long they stayed. The knowledge of what is hidden in the heavens and the earth be-longs to Him 'alone'. How perfectly He hears and sees! They have no guardian besides Him, and He shares His com-mand with none.'

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

Many of the first Muslims were very poor. One day, the Makkan leaders came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "If you really want us to join you, then you have to get rid of those poor, smelly individuals around you!" The Prophet (ﷺ) was hoping that one day those leaders would become Muslims, so he waited for instructions from Allah. Then verses 6:52 and 18:28 were revealed, ordering the Prophet (ﷺ) to continue to honour the faithful Muslims who sat with him and not to worry about those arrogant leaders. {Imam Muslim & Imam Al-Qurtubi}

ADVICE TO THE PROPHET

27Recite what has been revealed to you from the Book of your Lord. None can change His Words. And you can never find any shelter other than Him. 28Stick patiently with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, hoping to please Him. Do not let your eyes look beyond them, desiring the luxury of this life. And do not obey the ones whose hearts We have caused to be careless about remembering Us, who just follow their desires and are in total loss.

WARNING TO THE DISBELIEVERS

29And say, 'O Prophet,' 'This is' the truth from your Lord. Whoever wants, let them believe. And whoever wants, let them disbelieve.' We have definitely prepared for those doing wrong a Fire whose walls will completely surround them. When they cry for help, they will be helped with water like melted metal, which will burn 'their' faces. What a hor-rible drink! And what a terrible place to rest!

REWARD OF THE BELIEVERS

30As for those who believe and do good, We will never deny the reward of those who are best in deeds. 31They will have the Gardens of Eternity, with rivers flow-ing under their feet. There they will be decorated with bracelets of gold, and dressed in green clothes of fine and rich silk, relaxing there on 'decorated' couch-es. What an incredible reward! And what a wonderful place to rest!

STORY 2) THE OWNER OF THE TWO GARDENS

32Give them 'O Prophet' an example of two men. To the disbelieving' one We gave two gardens of grapes, which We surrounded with date trees and put 'dif-ferent' crops in between. 33Each garden nroduced all its truit, never falling short. And We caused a river to flow between them. 34And he had other resources as well. So he bragged to his "poor com-panion, while chatting with him, " have much more wealth and manpower than you." 35And he entered his property, while wronging his soul, saying, 'I do not think anything can happen to this 'prop-erty', 36and I do not think the Hour 'of Judgment' will ever come. And if in fact I am returned to my Lord, I will definitely end up with something far better than all this”

HIS COMPANION'S RESPONSE

37His 'believing' companion replied, while chatting with him, 'How can you deny the One Who created you from dust then 'developed you' from a hu-man seed, then formed you into a man? 38But for me: He is Allah, my Lord, and I will never make anyone equal to my Lord. 39If only you had said, when en-tering your property, 'This is all from Allah! There is no power except with Al-lah!' Even though you see that I have less wealth and children than you, 40perhaps my Lord will give me something better than your garden, and send down upon yours a thunderbolt from the sky, turn-ing it into a slippery wasteland, 41Or its water may sink 'into the earth', and then you will never be able to reach it again.

THE PUNISHMENT

42Sure enough, all his produce was 'to-tally' ruined. And there he was: twisting and turning his hands 'in shock' over everything he had put into it. Now that the whole thing had been destroyed, he cried, 'Oh no! I wish I had never made anyone equal to my Lord!' 43He had no manpower to help him against Allah, and he could not even help himself. 44At this time, support comes only from Allah-the True Lord. He is best in reward and best in result.

Verse 46 mentions "the good deeds that last forever." According to scholars, this means all good deeds and acts of worship that benefit us on Judgment Day and lead us to eternal life in Jannah, including prayers, charity, fasting, and dhikr (remembrance of Allah) such as: 'SubhanAllah' (Glory be to Allah), 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise be to Allah), and 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest). {Imam Ibn Kathir & Imam Al-Qurtubi}

SIDE STORY

Once upon a time, there was an Imam who lived in a village by the ocean. One day, he went to the market to sell his horse. Shortly after, a man came and said he would be blessed to buy the Imam's horse. The Imam advised the man, "This horse is unique and highly trained. To make it walk, you have to say, 'SubhanAllah.' To make it run, you have to say, 'Alhamdulillah.' And to make it stop, you have to say, 'Allahu Akbar.'" The man paid the price and thanked the Imam for the wonderful advice.

When he sat on the horse, he said, 'SubhanAllah.' The horse started to walk. Then he said, 'Alhamdulillah,' and it started to run. He kept saying, 'Alhamdulillah,' and the horse ran faster and faster. Suddenly, the man noticed that the horse was running towards a cliff. He was so terrified of falling into the ocean that he forgot how to stop the horse. He kept saying other things like, 'Astaghfirullah' and 'A'uzubillah,' but nothing seemed to work.

Finally, when the horse was just one step away from the edge, the man remembered and shouted, 'Allahu Akbar!' and the horse stopped. The man took a deep breath, looked up towards the sky, and shouted, 'Alhamdulillah!' The end.

SHORT & ETERNAL GAINS

45And give them an example of this life. 'It is' just like the plants of the earth, blooming when watered by the rain We send down from the sky. Then they soon crumble to pieces, blown away by the wind. And Allah has perfect power over all things. 46Wealth and children are the joy of this life, but the good deeds that last forever are far better with your Lord in reward and in hope.

JUDGMENT DAY

47Watch for' the Day We will blow the mountains away, and you will see the earth laid bare. And We will gather all 'humankind', leaving none behind. 48They will be presented in front of your Lord in rows, 'and the wicked will be told,' 'You have actually returned to Us 'all alone' as We created you the first time, even though you 'always' claimed that We would never set a time for your return.' 49And the book 'of deeds' will be laid 'open', and you will see the wick-ed panicking because of what is writ-ten' there. They will cry, 'Oh no! We are doomed! What kind of book is this that does not leave any sin, small or large, without recording it?' They will find whatever they did right in front of them. And your Lord will never treat anyone unfairly.

SATAN & HIS FOLLOWERS

50And remember' when We said to the angels, 'EBow down to Adam' so they all did--but not Iblis, who was one of the iinn, but he challenged the command of his Lord. How could you then take him and his children as guardians instead of Me, even though they are your enemies? What an evil choice made by those doing wrong! 51I never called them to witness the creation of the heavens and the earth or even their own creation. I would never take the misleaders as helpers. 52And 'watch for' the Day He will say, 'Call upon those 'idols' you claimed were My partners.' So they will call them, but will receive no response. And We will make them all share the same doom. 53The wicked will see the Fire and real-ize that they are going to fall into it, and will find no way to avoid it.

In verses 54-57, Allah says that He has given every kind of lesson in the Quran, but people just keep arguing, using falsehood against the truth, even without understanding it. For example, they argued that:

• The Quran was magic. • The Prophet (ﷺ) made the Quran up.

• Allah should have sent them an angel, not just a man. • There were other gods with Allah.

• Allah can't bring them back to life for judgment. • Their gods will defend them if there is actually a Judgment Day.

Arguing to establish the truth is acceptable in Islam. The Quran argues, for example, that Allah is our Creator and He alone deserves our worship, Muhammad (ﷺ) is His prophet, the Quran is a revelation from Him, and Judgment Day is coming for sure. The Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions also responded to people who came to argue about these beliefs. However, arguing for no reason is not good, especially when it's done only to show off or win an argument, not to support the truth.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I guarantee: • A home inside Paradise for those who give up arguing even if they are right. • A home in the middle of Paradise for those who avoid lying even if they are joking. • A home in the highest rank of Paradise for those who have good manners." {Imam Abu Dawood}

There was a man who smoked all the time. His wife tried every possible way to convince him to quit smoking, but he always refused. She told him that he was wasting their savings and harming himself, but he didn't listen. Eventually, she told him, "For every $10 you spend on cigarettes, I'm going to take $10 for myself from the savings." He argued, "Take $20, I don't care."

So she started to take money matching the amount he wasted buying cigarettes. But this didn't change the situation, so she decided to try something else. She told him that she was going to take the money and burn it, just like he burned cigarettes. It was only when he saw her burning the money that he realized he had made a mistake and promised to quit smoking—starting next year!

Khalid called his internet provider to complain about a payment increase. He said he had subscribed to the unlimited data package for $100, but when he used more than 20 gigabytes, they charged him an extra $50. He couldn't understand how his 'unlimited package' was 'limited.' After arguing for 30 minutes, the internet company replied, "Yes, our unlimited package is actually limited, just like your name is Khalid ('the one who lives forever'), but everyone knows you are going to die."

DENYING THE QURAN

54We have certainly given in this Quran every 'k kind of lesson for people, but hu-mans just Iike to argue more than any-thing. 55And nothing prevents people from believing when guidance comes to them and from seeking their Lord's for-giveness except 'their demand' to suffer the same fate of earlier deniers or see the punishment face-to-face, 56We only send the messengers to give good news and warnings. But the disbelievers argue with falsehood, 'hoping' to damage the ruth with it, and make fun of My reve-lations and warnings. 57And who does more wrong than those who are remind-ed of their Lord's revelations, then turn away from them and forget what their own hands have done? We have certain-ly covered their hearts-making them unable to understand this 'Quran'and blocked their ears. And if you O Proph-et' invite them to 'true' guidance, they will never be guided.

ALLAH'S PATIENCE

58Your Lord is the One full of forgive-ness and mercy. If He wanted to punish them 'immediately' for what they did, He would have sped up their punishment. But they have a set time, from which they will have no escape. 59Those 'are the' societies We destroyed when they kept doing Wrong and We had set a time for their destruction.

Verse 59: Meaning the people of 'Ad and Thamud.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

One day, Prophet Musa (A.S.) gave a powerful speech, then a man asked him, "Who is the most knowledgeable person on earth?" Since Musa (A.S.) was a great prophet, he replied, "That would be me!" Allah revealed to Musa (A.S.) that he should not have said that, and told him that there was a man who had special knowledge that Musa didn't have. Musa (A.S.) was then commanded to travel to meet this man, named Al-Khidr, at a place between two bodies of water. Musa (A.S.) asked how he could recognize that man, and Allah told him, "Take a (salted) fish with you and wherever you lose it, you will find him there."

Musa (A.S.) and his young assistant Yusha' walked for days until they reached the point between the two bodies of water and decided to get some rest. Suddenly, the salted fish came back to life and jumped into the water, but Yusha' forgot to tell Musa (A.S.). After they continued their travel, Musa (A.S.) asked for the fish and Yusha' told him that it was lost where they had rested. Musa (A.S.) said, "This is the sign we were looking for." Then they walked back and found Al-Khidr.

Musa (A.S.) asked Al-Khidr if he could kindly follow him and learn from his special knowledge. At first, Al-Khidr said, "You can't be patient enough with me." Musa (A.S.) promised to be patient and obedient. But soon Musa (A.S.) protested: • When Al-Khidr made a hole in a ship after its owners had given them a free ride. • When he killed an innocent boy. • When he fixed the wall of an unkind people for free. Before they went their separate ways, Al-Khidr explained to Musa (A.S.) why he had done all of these things. The Prophet (ﷺ) commented on this story: "I wish my brother Musa (A.S.) had been more patient so Allah would tell us more about him and the man of knowledge." {Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim}

STORY 3) MUSA & AL-KHIDR

60And 'remember' when Musa said to his young assistant, 'I will never give up until I reach the point where the two seas meet, even ifI travel for ages.' 61But when they 'finally' reached that point, they forgot their 'salted' fish, and it made its way into the sea, slipping away. 62When they had passed further, he said to his assistant, 'Bring us our meal! We have certainly been exhausted by today's journey.' 63He e replied, 'Do you remem-ber when we rested by the rock? That is when' I forgot the fish. No one made me forget to mention this except Satan. And the fish incredibly made its way into the sea.' 64Musa responded, 'That is exactly what we were looking for:' So they went back, retracing their footsteps.

MUSA MEETS AL-KHIDR

65There they found a servant of Ours, who had been blessed with mercy from Us and gifted with 'special" knowledge of Our Own. 66Musa said to him, 'May I follow you, if you are going to teach me Some of the right guidance you have been taught?' 67He replied, 'You really cannot be patient enough with me. 68And how can you be patient with what is beyond your knowledge?' 69Musa promised, 'You will find me patient, in-sha-Allah, and I will not disobey any of your or-ders' 70He replied, 'Then if you follow me, do not question me about anything until I myself clarify it for you.”

THE SHIP INCIDENT

71So they moved on, until they board-ed a ship, and the man made a hole in it. Musa protested, 'Have you just done this to drowm its people? You have certainly done a terrible thing!' 72He replied, 'Did I not say that you cannot have patience with me?' 73Musa said, 'Excuse me for forgetting, and do not be hard on me.'

THE BOY INCIDENT

74Then they moved on until they came across a boy, and the man killed him. Musa protested, 'Have you just killed an innocent soul that killed no one? You have certainly done a horrible thing!' 75He replied, 'Did I not tell you that you cannot have patience with me?' 76Musa said, 'If I ever question you about any-thing after this, do not keep me in your company, because by then I would have given you enough of an excuse.'

THE WALL INCIDENT

77Then they moved on until they came to the people of a town. They asked them for some food, but the people refused to give them any. There they found a wall ready to collapse, so the man fixed it up. Musa protested, 'If you wanted, you could have demanded a fee for this.” 78He replied, 'That's it, we must go our separate ways! I will explain to you what you could not take patiently.'

THE 3 INCIDENTS EXPLAINED

79As for the ship, it belonged to some poor people who work at sea. So I wanted to damage it, because there was a 'wick-ed' king ahead of them who took every 'good' ship by force. 80And as for the boy, his parents were true believers, but we feared that he would 'later' pres-sure them into wickedness and disbelief. 81So we hoped that their Lord would give them another child, more faithful and caring in his place. 82And as for the wall, it was for two orphan boys in the city, and under the wall was a treasure that belonged to them, and their father had been a good man. So your Lord wanted these children to grow up and dig out their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. I did not do it all on my own. This is the explanation of what you could not take patiently.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

The next story is of a faithful king who travelled to the far east and far west, and is known as Zul-Qarnain ('the two horns/points of sunrise and sunset'). Some people think that Zul-Qarnain was Alexander the Great, but this can't be true because Alexander the Great was an idol-worshipper. Most likely, Zul-Qarnain was Abu Kuraib Al-Hamiri, a believing king from Yemen. According to Imam Ibn Kathir, Allah blessed Zul-Qarnain with authority and resources, so he travelled long distances. During his journey to the west, he was inspired to reward those who do good and punish those who do evil. He did the same during his journey to the east.

In his third journey, he came across a group of people that had no protection from the sun. He met a group of people who understood him only through sign language. They asked him to build a barrier between the two mountains to protect them from the attacks of the people of Ya'juj and Ma'juj.

We don't know for sure where Ya'juj and Ma'juj are locked away. This shouldn't be strange if we keep in mind that every now and then we come into contact with a new tribe (for example, in the Amazon Forest and the Philippines) that was previously unknown. At the end of time, Ya'juj and Ma'juj will be able to dig their way out of that barrier and cause a lot of trouble throughout the land before they will eventually be destroyed.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Someone may ask, "If the Quran doesn't conflict with science, how come verse 86 says that the sun was setting in the mud?" Here are a few tips to deal with these types of questions: • The Makkan idol-worshippers never used these verses to question the Quran because they understood what they meant. • The scholars of the Quran have already gone through these verses and explained them in detail, including Imam Ar-Razi and Imam Az-Zamakhshari. • Today, some people who hate Islam try to find ways to attack the Quran, so they use these kinds of questions even though they can't read or understand Arabic.

Now, the verse doesn't say that the sun was setting in the mud. It says it appeared to Zul-Qarnain to be setting on a muddy spring. In other words, this is what he saw, not what actually happened. Similarly, we use the words 'sunrise' and 'sunset' even though the sun doesn't actually rise or set. This is just what appears to our eyes, not what really happens.

In many places in the Quran, Allah tells us things from the perspective of people, even though He sees things differently. For example: • In 27:7-8, when Musa (A.S.) saw the burning bush, he thought it was on fire, but it was actually shining with light. • In 40:57, Allah says that creating the heavens and the earth would be far greater than re-creating humans, based on what people think. But for Him, He creates everything with one word: 'kun,' 'Be!' • In 22:17, Allah says that He will judge between the Muslims, Christians, Jews, and others on Judgment Day. He uses the same titles that people use to describe themselves, even though the only faith acceptable to Him is Islam (3:19 and 3:85).

STORY 4) ZUL-QARNAIN

83They ask you 'O Prophet' about Zul-Qarnain. Say, 'I will tell you some of his story.' 84We certainly established him in the land, and empowered him to do all things.

JOURNEY TO THE WEST

85So he travelled a path, 86until he reached the setting point of the sun. It appeared to him to be setting in a spring of muddy water. There he found some people. We inspired him, 'O Zul-Qarnain! Either punish them or treat them kindly.' 87He said, 'As for those who do wrong, we will punish them, then they will be returned to their Lord, Who will put them through a horrible punishment.' 88But as for those who believe and do good, they will have the best reward, and we will make things easy for them.

JOURNEY TO THE EAST

89Then he travelled a 'different' path 90until he reached the rising point of the sun. He found it rising on a people that We had provided no shelter against it.! 91So it was. And We definitely knew all about him.

Verse 90: They probably had no clothes or homes to protect them from the sun.

ANOTHER JOURNEY

92Then he travelled a 'third' path 93until he reached 'a space' between two mountains. He found in front of them a people who could hardly under-stand his language. 94They begged, 'O Zul-Qarnain! Ya'juj and Ma'juj are really causing trouble throughout the land. Can we pay you something to build a wall between us and them?' 95He replied, 'What my Lord has provided for me is far hetter. But help me with resources, and I will build a barrier between you and them.' 96Bring me blocks of iron!' Then. when he had filled up 'the gap' between the two mountains, he said, 'Blow!' When the iron became red hot, he said. 'Bring me melted copper to pour over it.' 97And so the enemies could not climb or tunnel through it. 98He declared, 'This is a mercy from my Lord. But when the promise of my Lord comes true, He will level this barrier' to the ground. And my Lord's promise is always true.' 99On that Day, We will let them² swarm over each other. Later, the Horn will be blown, 13 and We will gather everyone together.

Verse 99: Ya'juj and Ma'juj.

THE WICKED ON JUDGMENT DAY

100On that Day, We will display Jahannam Clearly for the disbelievers, 101those who turned a blind eye to My Reminder" and could not stand listening "to the truth. 102Do those who disbelieve think they tan simply take My faithful' servants as lords instead of Me? We have surely Prepared Hell as a welcoming reception for the disbelievers.

Verse 101: i.e.,the Quran.

Verse 102: Like'Isa and the angels.

THE LOSERS

103Say, 'O Prophet,' 'Shall we tell you who will be the biggest losers of deeds?' 104'They are' those whose efforts are lost in this life, while they think they are doing good!' 105They are the ones who reject their Lord's signs and the meeting with Him, making their deeds worth-less, so We will not give their deeds any weight on Judgment Day. 106That is their punishment: Hell, for disbelieving and making fun of My signs and messengers.

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

You might have heard the phrase, "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence." This means that many people are never satisfied with what they have and think that what others have is better. They wish for a better phone, car, or house. For example, • Kids want to grow older, and old people wish they could go back to childhood. • Poor people want to be rich, and rich people want to sleep peacefully at night like poor people do. • Many unmarried people are desperate to get married, and some married people wish they were single. • Those who have a bike may envy those who have a car, who envy those who have a yacht, who envy those who have a private jet. • Someone might have an old phone and switch to a smart phone, but then can't wait to upgrade to an even newer model. • Someone might move from an apartment to a townhouse, and now wants a mansion instead.

But the situation will be totally different in Jannah. In verse 108 of this surah, Allah says that the people of Jannah will never wish to move anywhere else because no place is better. There can't be better homes, clothes, food, or a better quality of life than what's in Jannah. The Prophet (ﷺ) reported that Allah said, "I have prepared for my faithful servants what no eye has ever seen, no ear has ever heard of, and no mind has ever imagined." {Imam Al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim}

THE WINNERS

107Indeed, those who believe and do good will have the Gardens of Paradise as a welcoming stay, 108where they will be forever, never desiring anywhere else.

WRITING ALLAH'S KNOWLEDGE

109Say, 0 Prophet, 'Tf the ocean were ink for 'writing' the Words of my Lord, it would definitely run out before the Words of my Lord were finished, even if We refilled it with other oceans.'

HAVE FAITH & DO GOOD

110Say, 'O Prophet,' 'I am only human like you, but' it has been revealed to me hat your God is only One God. So whoe-hopes for the meeting with their Lord, let them do good deeds and never make anyone equal to their Lord in worship.'

Verse 110: Meaning g they do not worship others with Allah and they do not show off.
