LEARNING POINTS

This surah is a prayer to Allah for protection from every type of harm including attacks at night, evil spells, and envy.

Allah, Who is able to remove the darkness of night and bring daylight, is able to protect us all from any harm.

No one can protect us from bad things or bless us with good things except Allah.

BACKGROUND STORY

BACKGROUND STORY

One day, the Prophet ﷺ was not feeling well, because an evil person tried to cast a magic spell on him by making 11 knots and blowing on them (a form of black magic). Then the angel Jibreel came down with this surah and the next (with a total of 11 verses). Every time Jibreel recited a verse, a knot was undone, until the Prophet ﷺ felt well again. (Recorded by Imam Al-Baihaqi)

WORDS OF WISDOM

WORDS OF WISDOM

Some people have evil eyes—which basically means that they may look at you with jealousy, and this will cause bad things to happen to you. We should try to protect ourselves from evil eyes by protecting our privacy, especially online. We don't have to tell people about everything that Allah has blessed us with. We don't have to take a selfie and post it on social media every time we go to an expensive restaurant or buy a fancy pair of shoes. Also, we need to recite this Surah and the next one, as well as morning and evening **du'as** (known as **azkar**) for protection.

When we see someone blessed with something good, we should say, 'Ma-sha-Allah,' and ask Allah to bless them with more. The angels will say, 'And you too will get the same.' (Recorded by Imam Muslim)

Envy is not a good quality. Some people become jealous when they see a person with many blessings. They even wish that those blessings are taken away from that person. Those who envy others are disrespectful to Allah because they think He doesn't put blessings in the right place. Jealous people harm themselves before they harm others.

SIDE STORY

SIDE STORY

There was a man, named Shakoor, who was very jealous because Allah blessed his friend, Zahid, with a successful business. In the same town lived a man, named Basir, who had evil eyes. Basir would take one look at a person and cause bad things to happen to them immediately. Shakoor paid some money to Basir to destroy Zahid's business. One day, Zahid was returning from a business trip with 50 camels carrying honey, olive oil, and silk. Shakoor and Basir agreed to wait by the gate of the town, and when Zahid came close, Basir would use his evil eyes to destroy the camels. When Shakoor saw the camels from 3 miles away, he yelled, 'Basir! They are coming.' Basir asked, 'Where?' Shakoor answered, 'Over there. They are only 3 miles away.' Basir looked at him in a jealous way and said, 'No way! Can you see them from that far? You must have sharp eyes.' All of a sudden, Shakoor started to have pain in his eyes, and in two minutes he became totally blind. Basir then ran away, leaving the camels to arrive home safely.

This is a fictional story of 3 people who used to work for a store. They always got each other in trouble because they were jealous of one another. One day, the store owner asked them to travel a long distance to buy things for the store. On the way, they got lost in the desert, and used up all the food and water they had with them. As they starved, they decided to dig a hole in search of water. However, they found a magic lamp instead. When they rubbed it, the genie came out and told them that each had only one wish. They started to fight over who should start first. One of them snatched the lamp and asked the genie to send him back to the store, and poof, he found himself in the store. The next guy punched the other in the face, and asked the genie to take him back to the store, and poof, he found himself in the store with the other guy. The third one was very mad because they left him behind with the genie. He demanded, 'Here is my wish: I want these two guys back right now!' And poof.

PRAYER FOR PROTECTION

1Say, 'O Prophet, I seek protection in the Lord of the break of day, 2From the evil of whatever He has created, 3And from the evil of the night when it grows dark, 4And from the evil of those witches casting spells by blowing on knots, 5And from the evil of the jealous when they envy others.
